Anderson .Paak is an artist that is growing immensely this year for his now recognized talent that has been hiding for years. Since the recent success of his Malibu album, .Paak's eye, and ear for detail, are becoming the niche in anything he touches. With a successful, and most talked about set during this year’s Coachella, .Paak continued the momentum with the release of his latest video for "The Season / Carry Me / The Waters." The three song compilation is entwined perfectly as we explore .Paak's vivid journey.
The video is separated into three acts to distinguish each song, and we are greeted to a curtain, mimicking a nostalgic time, presenting the credits beforehand. Following the rise of the curtain, the playful scenery presents .Paak in an animated bed prepping for a

By the second act and rise of the curtain, "Carry Me" begins as a narrative from .Paak in a therapist chair, recollecting past thoughts of when they took his mother away on tax related charges, according to an interview on Pitchfork. Effortless emotions seep out as .Paak sings the hook, “Knees hit the floor, screams to the Lord / Why they had to take my ma? (Momma carry me?) /To the early morn.”
As a frightened .Paak runs towards his salvation, more of his life is strewned across, and the joy of being found through religion ultimately sets him free. Cleverly intertwined during the scene of .Paak being baptized, he becomes submerged and act three begins with the track “The Waters” featuring BJ The Kid.
While only the first verse of “The Waters” is displayed within the video, enough of it is needed for the world to see where .Paak came from, what he went through, and how he created his own joy.
“Personal Touch” is why fans flock to .Paak, among genius musical craft. The sense of “hope” is derived from .Paak in more ways than one, and for all “the dreamers” this video sparks a fire to keep
Countless people around the world listen to various styles of music. Despite the genre, whether it be country or hip hop, these songs deliver a message onto it’s listeners daily. Same songs could have a different meaning to different people depending on the experiences that they go through or the tribulations that one is currently facing. Spotless Minds by Jhene Aiko offers a message about love and how although love could be a blessing, it can also act as a curse. This song should not be viewed as merely a song, but more like a lesson that is teached using only a few lyrics. The deeper the context, the more meaning the song will have on particular people. The art in the way these lyrics are carefully composed, when sung, conveys a bittersweet message that reminds listeners of the joys and miseries of love as well as the experiences that Jhene went through. The lyrics, the deeper meanings hidden behind stanzas, and the relatability of this song are reasons why Spotless Minds is an interesting yet harsh reality that love isn’t how people see it in the movies. This song carries in it a meaning of true love that yearns to be heard around the world. Whether heard by a married couple or a high school relationship that is still blossoming, this song speaks to all who are willing to listen.
Both the song lyrics and the video have a core ethos that they share. The trend of ethos in the video is somewhat more noticeable than the ethos in the song because of the visuals provided, but still just as complex. Whereas in the song the writer is simply stating that he wishes he could turn back time, in the video, he brings the audience back in time with him to see the things that he experienced as a child.
The music video of the song both plays a role in relating to the audience and showing the style of the song. The music video starts off giving background details of before he left to become a soldier. It shows them sharing an intimate moment about how they will begin their family once he returns. In the song alone it does not give that background knowledge. This introduction to the music video builds a narrative to start the beginning of their love story before the song even starts. As it starts you see the soldier becoming nervous due to the fact he hasn’t been home in a long time. This amplifies reaching the audience because it many soldiers or loved ones of soldiers can relate to how life can change dramatically when their loved ones leave and come back from war. Another way the
He is able to use these parts to manipulate the audience’s emotions. The music playing from the car is an on-screen sound. As the man gets attacked, the volume increases. The sound helps intensify the scene that has been created by the film’s visual elements. The audience then subconsciously forms ideas, opinions, and feelings about what they are seeing. The viewers develop scared feelings as the scene intensifies to the happy upbeat tune. The increasing volume of the cheery song reflects the violence and the sinisterness of the scene. The song stops with the slamming of the car’s driver-side door as the man is abducted. There is a moment of silence and then a new song abruptly entered the silent scene. The music is non-diegetic and is an offscreen sound. The song is screechy, high pitched, and jagged sounding at first, continuing the anxious and scared mood. The song shifts into a sort of soulful hymn. The tone shifts along with the song. The audience begins to feel relieved and relaxes to the peaceful song.
“Wade in the Water” is an excerpt from Alvin Ailey’s Revelations. His masterpiece Revelations was created in1960 and it reflects his experience and memories of growing up in Texas. “Wade in the Water” is a dance within Revelations that shows us a traditional baptism ceremony that takes place in a river. Alvin Ailey’s “Wade in the Water” shows us the hope that blacks had of someday being free. The baptism signifies the faith and hope of blacks being free from slavery and beginning a new life with freedom. For example, in (1:23-1:40) we see three male dancers with what look like tree branches “cleansing” the air from evil spirits before the baptism takes place. In (1:16-1:23) we see seven dancer taking two steps forward and two steps back with their hands together, like they were praying, and two other dancers with their hands up, as if they were asking god for help.
In the third stanza, the diction of “heaven” and “noble” allows the speaker to craft an image of an almost godlike juggler. This view of the juggler creates the tone of amazement and ardent which breaks through the previous gloomy description of the earth in the first stanza which “falls/ So in our hearts from brilliance” (lines 3-4). This reveals that the world the juggler has made, unlike the earth which the speaker doesn’t appear to have fond feelings of, is a joyful and light-hearted place that the speaker is easily captivated by. As the juggler “reels that heaven in” (line 16), creates an atmosphere of an almost unearthly experience. This description of the juggler as a master of spiritual elements allows readers to view how the speaker's attitude is uplifted and enlightened.
In The Book of Yaak, Bass understands his intent, his purpose, of which is not to chase the magic he has become accustomed to. Rather, it
To start off, I really enjoy the beat that Bryce uses on this track. This song features an upbeat rhythm, and the lyrics compliment the beat. The entire song is supposed to deliver a nostalgic feel to the listener. Throughout the song, He incorporates popular themes from his childhood into the lyrics, and the music video features these themes throughout. For me, I think the nostalgic theme works well with this song. It provides a happy, carefree feeling to the listener. When I listen to this song, it personally brings back feeling and memories from the summer I was shown it. Because of this, I believe the nostalgic theme of the song is a good fit. Another reason this is good music is because of the lyrics. These lyrics break away from the typical stereotype that is expected from rap/hip-hop music. It seems that recently, few popular songs have lyrics with meaning. Most feature lyrics that will appeal to the masses to sell the most records. This is where Bryce Vine differentiates himself from these artists. His lyrics share stories and experiences from his life, and are very personalized for the listener. I recently went to one of his concerts he had in East Lansing, and when he performed Sour Patch Kids, the entire crowd was singing along, and was brought together. This experience exemplifies what Bryce Vine’s music is all about; connecting people and delivering quality
Chris Stapleton released his debut album, Traveller, in the Spring of 2015. This album is characterized by what I would describe as a traditional country feel, but with a slightly more modern sound, or to be more technical, a country rock meets blues album. This record, and Chris Stapleton himself, went relatively unnoticed by the general public after initial release. It was not until the 2015 CMA awards when Stapleton performed “Tennessee Whiskey” with Justin Timberlake that his album truly took off (Welch). Since then, songs from Traveller can frequently be heard on national country radio stations, as well as on tour, a show I will be attending in May.
My introduction to the work of Alex Turner came as a recommendation from a friend in High School. As a huge indie rock, music-enthusiast the chance to hear work that was unfamiliar always excited me. So immediately after school that afternoon, I downloaded the entire discography Alex Turner wrote and recorded with his band, The Arctic Monkeys, along with a solo album of his own. The themes discussed in those albums ranged from; heartbreak, experiencing night life, falling love, and the confusion and frustration of
Palmer tells stories about her art of asking. She uses twitter to send out tweets and her fans will respond, giving her band a place to stay, eat, or just hang out. Palmer continues to grab the audience’s attention with perplexity. It’s not often you’ll hear of someone couch surfing and crowd surfing. These personal stories give Palmer strong credibility because she went through these experiences first hand. Testimony is used as a support material when Palmer tells the story of pulling up to a poor neighborhood in Miami and finding out the 18-year-old girl they were supposed to stay with lived with the rest of her family, all undocumented immigrants from Honduras. The mother says, "Your music has helped my daughter so much. Thank you for staying here. We 're all so grateful." This quote proves Palmer’s point that they all give and receive so much from each other. When people genuinely see each other, they want to help each other. This goes back to Palmer’s thesis of artists being directly supported by fans.
Kendrick lamar’s award winning music video for his 2017 single Element shows the many experiences he faced growing up as a black man. The various symbols broadcasted throughout this music video show specific conflicts and struggle that he has dealt with throughout his life and also allowed black man that have been in his position something to relate to. He teamed up with director/photographer Jonas Lindstroem to help him convey his message but in a unique and creative way. The slow moving scenes show a softer depiction of his encounters. They give a sense of understanding which allows the viewer to be able to comprehend and absorb his message. As a whole, it was a collection of the pain, beauty, peace and violence that exists within his “element”.
As a child I frequently made up little songs, and there seemed to be a constant stream of music in my head. I could see myself in the children she was observing and like them I didn’t have a framework for my experience – it was just my life. Whether it was singing while playing, tapping out some rhythm, singing at the top of my lungs to a favorite song, or goosebumps from hearing “Hall of the Mountain King”, it all felt familiar and warming. It has also made me aware of the musicking I continue to make every day in small ways here and
Within the excerpt, the directors began with a medium shot. I understood the importance of making the viewer feel a part of the trio, therefore the condensed shot caused this; also, it allowed the musical announcement to have a greater emphasis on joy by beginning at a medium shot then zooming outwards as the characters spread apart. Once
Ever since I was born, there’s something about music that takes me away and focuses my mind on the music and lyric you could say it traditional, contemporary or anything. I used to imagine it’s impossible for me to become a musician because of where I am from and of my age but there’s something that pushes me to
