Of the 193 countries in the United Nations, 185 provide paid family leave at the national level. Of the eight that do not, nearly all of them are classified as “developing” countries; all of them, that is except one: the United States. The United States is the only industrialized nation in the world that does not guaran¬tee workers access to paid time off from work in order to care for a new child or a seri¬ously ill family member. Since the turn of the century, three states - California, New Jer¬sey, and Rhode Island - have enacted paid family leave programs.
