There are two basic types of depression which are Major or Unipolar Depression and Manic or Bipolar Depression. Major Depression is characterized by persistently sad or hopeless feelings. Some symptoms of Major Depression are change in weight or appetite, slowed behavior, change in sleeping patterns, loss of interest in activities that were once enjoyed, and thoughts of death or suicide. Manic Depression is associated with episodes of mood swings ranging from depressive lows to manic highs. During the depressive lows the symptoms are the same as the symptoms of Major Depression, but the symptoms of the manic episodes are different. The symptoms of the Manic episodes are more energy and sleeping less, inappropriate excitement or irritability, talking or moving more than usual, bad judgement and impulse decisions. There are two basic ways to treat depression which are Psychotherapy and Medication. Certain types of psychotherapy can help relieve depression, particularly Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy or CBT and Interpersonal Therapy or IPT. CBT helps change negative thinking and behavioral styles. IPT is used to work through disturbed personal relationships. One of the more common ways to treat depression is medication. In the report “Depression,” it states,“The medication influences the functioning of certain neurotransmitters in the brain, primarily Serotonin and Norepinephrine known as Monoamines.” Older medications, TCAs and MAOIs, effect both, but can have harsh side effects. Newer medications, SSRIs, have fewer side effects. But the most effective way to treat moderate-to-severe depression is a combination of both therapy and antidepressants. All in all, Depression can be treated differently depending on the person being treated.
