Eczema with the term dermatitis are the same, and two words are interchangeable. In the developed world, eczema accounts for a large proportion of skin disease. It is estimated that 10% percent of people have some form of eczema at any one time, and up to 40% of the population will have an episode of eczema during their lifetime. All eczemas have some features in common and there is a spectrum of clinical presentation from acute through to chronic. Vesicles or bullae may appear in the acute stage if inflammation is intense.
