"These wonderful narrations inspired me with strange feelings...". In Frankenstein the creature reads books that contributed to his personality. Paradise Lost, Sorrows of Young Werther, Plutarch’s Lives, and Ruins of Empire were the four books that built the creature's personality. If the creature were to read contrasting books his fate and overall personality might’ve been better.
To begin with, Paradise Lost is by John Milton. The original sin committed by Adam and Eve is the subject of Paradise Lost. The story also consists of the origin story of Satan. God banishes Satan to hell. Wanting revenge Satan transformed into a snake and tempts Adam and Eve to eat the apple from the Tree of knowledge and ultimately leads to the downfall of man. …show more content…

Palacio is a exceptional alternative for Paradise Lost. This book illustrates a story of August, a ten year old boy born with a facial deformity that made it difficult to make friends. He’s been homeschooled for most of his life, and one day his parents decide that it was time for him to go to a real school and they send him to Beecher prep. If the creature were to read this book he would be able to relate Auggie. In Wonder, Auggie is different from the other students, but he embraces his differences which allows him to make friends. The creature would also learn that it’s fine to be different and that personality matters more, he would also be able to make more positive connections compared to Paradise Lost.
Sorrows of Young Werther by Johann Wolfgang von Goethe is another book that influenced the creature’s personality. This book is basically about a summer spent in Werther a man who falls in love with a woman already married to another. The woman never returns any of these feelings, and Werther kills himself in the end. This story introduces the idea of suicide to the creature. By being introduced to this idea, the creature begins to confront the idea of suicide and weighs the options between living and ending his own
