Paradise Lost By John Milton

It could be said that the “paradise” that was lost in Paradise Lost was the equality of man and woman. In John Milton’s, Paradise Lost, Milton gives a fictional, inside look of the fall from grace. He explains the events that led up to the fall, the thoughts and inner workings of God and Satan, and the crumbling of Adam and Eve and their seemingly perfect relationship. Milton proves how Adam’s blind devotion and Eve’s uncertainty of her own self cause humanity to fall. In doing so, Paradise Lost has challenged the views of men and women, equality, and gender roles in society and the Christian church.
In order to fully understand Milton’s viewpoints, one must first understand the time that he was living in. When Paradise Lost was published in England, Milton had already gone against the grain of society with many publications. From around the 1630’s until his death, Milton wrote works such as The Doctrine and Discipline of Divorce that challenged people’s view of the morality of divorce, as well as The Tenure of Kings and Magistrates which was a critique of the monarchy that was ruling England at the time. For women during the 1600’s, life was hard. In Women In Early Modern England by Jacqueline Eales, the “status quo” for society is explained. “In the early modern period women were described by male authors as morally, intellectually and physically weaker than men” (4).
