Parenting style is one of many factors that strongly influence the child's development and their behaviors. Researchers have demonstrated many times that the environment in which children are raised has significant effects on a child’s intellectual, physical, social, and emotional development. For decades, researchers have also been interested in how parents influence their children's development, and one approach in this area is the study of what has been termed as parenting style. In 1971, clinical and developmental psychologist, Diana Baumrind came up with three main categories of parenting styles: authoritarian, authoritative and democratic. Parents can be a mixture of three styles or fall into one or more categories.

Jeff Howenstein, DMD, MS., Dr. Ashok Kumar, DDS, MS., Dr. Paul S. Casamassimo, DDS, MS., Dr. Dennis McTigue, DDS, MS., Dr. Daniel Coury, MD., and Dr. Han Yin, Ph.D., “the correlation between parenting styles and their children's behavior is furthered explore by a study which shows how the parenting style can affect the child’s behavior during the first dental visit. In this study, 132 parents/child of new patients aged three to six years completed the Parenting Styles and Dimensions Questionnaire (PSDQ) (Correlating Parenting Styles with Child Behavior and Caries). “Children vary in their responses to the dental experience, which are influenced by health, culture, parenting styles, age, cognitive level, anxiety and fear, reaction to strangers, pathology, social expectations, and the temperament" (Howenstein, Kumar, Casamassimo, McTigue, Coury, and Yin 2015). This study shows that children with authoritative parents exhibited more positive behavior because children feel comfortable sharing anything with their parents compared to those children who have authoritarian and permissive
In this day in age there are various approaches to raising children. Each parent(s) must decide for them selves which style best fits their beliefs and abilities. Many parents come to the conclusion that they will try their best and just hope that their children learn right from wrong and the abilities they need to succeed in life. However, what most parents do not always realize is that the style of parenting they are using may have a bigger impact on their child than they are aware of. For the sake of these parents and their sanity, as well as the children’s, I have classified these styles of parenting into categories.
Many psychologists throughout history have indulged in studies related to parenting behavior and how children are affected from such behavior. The work of Diana Baumrind, which is considered to be one of the most influential and well-studied theories of parenting behavior, was the first to identify three styles of parenting (Sclafani 44). These styles of parenting are called authoritative, authoritarian, and permissive. This paper will further explain descriptions of these styles and the typical behaviors of children as a result of each style. This paper will also provide insight on the parenting style I was raised on along with my thoughts on types of discipline I might use in the
Parenting style is one of many factors that strongly influence child development. One’s choice of parenting style is most often molded by their cultural background. American parents use a myriad of parenting styles, all of which have their roots in various cultural beliefs about which method is best to raise a child. In 1971, clinical and developmental psychologist, Diana Baumrind, recognized three different categories of parenting styles that she believed described most parents’ methods (Berger, 2011). Parents who fell into the authoritarian style of parenting set high standards and strict rules for their children. Disobedience was not tolerated and was met
Parenting styles depends based on caregiver traits and the personalities of the children. Culture is also a factor that has an effect on the type of parenting skills towards their children. Diana Baumrind acknowledged three parenting styles, along with a fourth that was incorporated later. The first style of caregiving is Authoritarian. In authoritarian parenting, it does not matter what the child say, what the parent says is final. If the child does not corporate, strict punishment is delivered. In a better understanding, parents set down clear rules and hold high standards [1]. They do not expect their children to propose opinions, or talk about emotions. Parents usually do not show affection even though they do love their child. The second
The influence that parenting styles can have on a child’s identity and emotional stability can be positive, negative or a combination., The impact o on numerous occasions I have observed parents and children in their natural stated, and I have focus on how the children are behaving. I have often wondered that is what I am observing the children natural state. The study of emotional development is a critical link to a better understanding of emotional problems when they appear throughout the life span (Broderick & Blewitt, 2015).
With over three hundred million Americans and over six billion people worldwide parenting skills are essential to maintain a healthy society. Parenting involves many aspects and requires many skills. It is a time to nurture, instruct, and correct in order to develop fundamental skills children will need to be mature, responsible, and contributing adults to a society. There are four commonly identified parenting styles; authoritarian, authoritative, permissive, and uninvolved parenting. Of the four parenting styles, two remain on opposite ends of the parenting spectrum. These two styles; authoritarian, and permissive both have deleterious results that are often visible throughout different developmental stages, such as rebellious
Parenting is the process of raising a child. It is one of the oldest responsibilities parents have towards their children. Be a parent can be challenging and rewarding as well. Each parent uses different parenting styles. In the early 1960s, Diana Baumrind concluded that parenting styles differ in four important areas: parents ' warmth/nurturance, discipline strategy, communication skills, and expectations of maturity. She concluded that there are four types of parenting styles which are uninvolved, permissive, Authoritarian, and authoritative. Parenting styles are going to be discussed in the rest of this essay as well as their effects on the child development.
Diane Baumrind was the first one who defined authoritative parenting style and made a new system for classifying parents. Depending on Diana Baumrind 's theory (1991) about parenting, she identifies three distinctive parenting styles that cover different parenting techniques worldwide. She named them authoritarian, authoritative, and permissive. Authoritarian parents participate in interactions with their children characterized by low warmth and utilize a strict and harsh discipline style. Authoritative parents participate in interactions with their children characterized by high warmth and utilize non-punitive discipline in which they share
In addition, development is also affected by styles of child rearing. The text mentions that the parenting theory developed by Diana Baumrind in 1971 is, “combinations of parenting behaviors that occur over a wide range of situations, creating an enduring child-rearing environment” (Berk, 217). There are four parenting styles which include, authoritative, authoritarian, permissive, and uninvolved. Both attachment and parenting styles are essential in the development process because they can influence behaviors that are displayed throughout person’s adulthood.
Parenting style is very important in child rearing and can have consequences in the way that a child develops and can have long term effects on children and their personality later in life. Diana Baumrind developed her ideas of parenting styles and their effects by studying 100 preschool children and their parents. Although most of the subjects of her study were Californian middle class European Americans, thus not offering much diversity in her study, the results were very persuasive and interesting. Baumrind found that parents varied on four dimensions: expression of warmth, strength of discipline, communication, and expectation of maturity. Using these dimensions as the basis Baumrind developed three main classifications of parenting
Diana Baumrind is a researcher who focused on the classification of parenting styles. Baumrind’s research is known as Baumrind’s parenting typology”. In her research, she found what she considered to be the four basic elements that could help shape successful parenting: responsiveness vs. unresponsiveness and demanding vs. undemanding. Parental responsiveness refers to the degree to which the parent responds to the child's needs in a supportive and accepting manner. Through her studies Baumrind identified three initial parenting styles: Authoritative parenting, authoritarian parenting and permissive parenting. Baumrind believed that parents should be neither punitive nor aloof. Rather, they should develop rules for their children and be affectionate with them. These parenting styles are meant to describe normal variations in parenting, not deviant parenting, such as might be observed in abusive homes. In addition, parenting stress can often cause changes in parental behavior such as inconsistency, increased negative communication, decreased monitoring and/or supervision, setting vague rules or limits on behaviour, being more reactive and less proactive, and engaging in increasingly harsh disciplinary behaviours.
Parenting styles refer to the manner in which adult figures are accustomed to in the process of child rearing. This can refer to the caregiver's level of expectation, performance demands and attentiveness to rules as well as the style of discipline that the parents follow to enforce their expectations on the child or adolescent. Parenting styles tend to reflect two primary dimensions of behaviour: emotionality and control. There are three types of parenting styles that will be the focus of this piece, Permissive parenting, authoritarian parenting and authoritative parenting. (Baumrind’s 1971) permissive, authoritarian and authoritative typologies are currently widely used models of parenting styles..The use of parenting style is used to capture normal variations
Every child is expected to grow up with a family and be raised by his/her parents. In most cases that is what happens in a child's life, but that doesn’t mean that every child that grows with a family and is raised by his/her parents ends up being the same. Each parent has a different way of raising their kid. (Nevid, 2012) Some styles are more effective and positive than others, but in the end the ones who chose the style they want their kids to grow up with are parents. Psychologists have discovered that even though each parent has their way of raising their kid there are four main styles that most parents use. These are: authoritarian parenting, authoritative parenting, permissive parenting, and uninvolved parenting. Which one is best? it all depends on the parents perspective on life. (Baumrind, 1967).
As the social, emotional, and academic effects can vary in adolescents, the choice of parenting style should be an informed decision. Parenting style is “the emotional climate in which the parents’ behavior toward their children is expressed. It is in the context of this emotional climate that parents’ behavior influences children’s personality, consequently affecting their academic performance in school” (Litali). Psychologist Diana Baumrind identified four parenting styles based upon two aspects of parenting behavior, control and warmth or emotional guidance. When these two aspects of parenting behavior merge in diverse ways, four primary parenting styles occur, authoritative, authoritarian and permissive. Authoritarian parenting
Over time theories have arisen that parents are teachers to their children. In other words, what a child learns comes from their parents first, and then other influences throughout their life. Lev Vygotsky viewed parents as masters and the child as an apprentice in learning. (Dance-Schissel 2017). Diana Baumrind researched that parenting styles come from three different types. Authoritarian, are parents that are very strict, unbending and inflexible. These types of parents tend to control every aspect of their children’s life. The second parenting style she came up with was, authoritative parents are firm, loving and kind.
