I am Amanda Selich, 27 years old, and have been living in San Francisco for roughly 10 years. I grew up in the East Bay with my 3 siblings and was raised by a single father. Much of my childhood was spent taking care of my younger siblings. This responsibility was so demanding I was forced to drop out of high school and become their “surrogate mother”. However at the age of 24 I was able to get my GED and finally attend college. In fact this past May I graduated from City College of San Francisco with highest honors in Science and Math.

There are many different fields to choose from while working as a Registered Nurse. “Registered nurses work in hospitals, physicians' offices, home healthcare services, and nursing care facilities. Others work in correctional facilities, schools, or serve in the military.” (bls.gov). You can also specialize in a specific type of nursing by seeking employment in that individual line of work or by taking a certification test. “The Nursing2011 Salary Survey reports that nurses certified in a specialty earn an average of $10,200 per year more than nurses who are not.” (pncb.org). If you choose to go further with your education you can continue past a bachelor’s degree and get a master’s degree becoming a nurse practitioner.

The field I am going into is very versatile and large. I plan on going into the nursing field; I will be majoring as a nurse practitioner and minoring in orthopedic nursing. I plan on doing this because I have always been fascinated with the way the body works and how God designed us. When I was in eighth grade, I had patella tendonitis, and in eleventh grade I was diagnosed with clinical rheumatoid arthritis. Those events were what steered my dreams of being a nurse into a specific place. Nursing is a profession within the health care field that focuses care on not only individual patients, but also their family and community too. As a nurse, our goal is to attain, maintain, or recover patients to optimal health and quality of life holistically. Nurses also differentiate themselves in from other health care providers because of how they approach their patient care, training, and scope of practice. These are just a few of the reasons that I have decided to make nursing my major. There are many different specialisms with differing levels of authority and responsibility that are available with a nursing major, many of which can be obtained with a two-year degree.

It takes a lot to faze me, blood, guts and bodily fluids are of no exception. I'm looking into the health field, as a registered nurse. My ASVAB score pointed to more of a social and realistic career, which pointed to more health related careers. I'm currently in the Lycoming Career Technology Center for health careers and I'm in my third year. I knew I wanted to pursue a career in field and I knew it would be a Nurse. Being in any occupation of the health field isn't easy the same goes for nurses. Countless hours of college education, repetitive relearning classes, semi-high salary and long hours, doesn't sound fun for some, but for me, it sounds great.

I experience two great learning opportunities, where my preceptor helped me understand how population requires unique care, different from inpatient nursing. The first example was of a mother who brings her disable son to the clinic and was having problems with the visiting nurse not showing up to the appointments on time. The mother explained that she works fulltime, attend school and do not have a home health aide all day. Her son is disable and so is her husband. When she provides the time for the visiting nurse to come to the house, she must be on time and not consistently late. As she is unable to sit around waiting to open the door, as the nurse is constantly late and keeps missing the scheduled time. The now causes the mother to have

From the age of five, I knew my purpose in life: I wanted to dedicate myself to serving people by helping them recover from illness and prevent disease. When I was fives years old, my grandmother became very ill. During her illness, all I wanted to do was care for her in hopes of making her feel better. I vividly remember handing her a glass of water every time she needed to take her medications and wanting to be the only person that would help her eat when she was bed ridden and needed feeding assistance. My goal everyday was to do anything within my power to make her feel better in hopes that she would recover with my help. Growing up my mother worked as a nurse which consequently built a strong respect as well as admiration for the profession. However, up until the day I left for college I never considered this career for me. As a last resort I made checklist to try and determine the major that best fit my aspirations for the future. Nursing immediately jumped out at me and since then I have been infatuated with the goal of becoming a nurse.

Please first address what or who has influenced your decision to pursue a career in healthcare?

According to my result from “My next move”, there are many different careers that are a match for me. Many of them did not interest me, but there were a few that caught my eye or I already have been thinking about. Choosing one career is very difficult, especially if you do not know what you want to do with the rest of your life. Luckily for me, I knew since as long as I can remember, that I wanted to become a nurse. The only thing is, I never knew exactly what field in nursing I wanted to work in, but in most cases you can not choose. One thing I am sure of is to become a Registered Nurse, it is what I always wanted to become. Other careers that interested to me but didn't know much about is a Physical Therapist and Nurse Midwives.

When I first decided that I wanted to further my education in nursing, I was inspired by my job as a Home-Health Aide. At the age of sixteen, I started working for a company called Miracles In Motions. I worked with individuals who are mentally and physically disabled; assisting them with all their daily needs. One day on my job, I was introduced to Mr. Peloquin, a man with Cerebral Palsy. I introduced myself to him and he began telling me stories about himself and his disability. I could tell that he enjoyed my company and he expressed that he does not get to tell his stories often. The story that really caught my interest involved his recent hospital visit. He told me how mistreated he had been by the hospital staff due to his disability; there was no interaction from the health professionals, and he was not treated like a human being. He stressed to me that he hated the way he was treated and that this was just one of multiple similar situations. Conversing with Mr. Peloquin that day gave me a heavy

So many people say saving lives takes hard work and extensive training, but are they really dedicated to do the work it takes. Medical school takes hard work and so much time to do the work as being a nurse. Being a nurse you have to have the heart and the great skills to be the best care giver you could be to a patient in need for help. Not only are you impacting someone else life but you are also impacting yourself with the great benefits they offer you, the way the patients acknowledge you by your hard work. Nurses make sure they have the care they need. Nursing is one of the most longest working shifts in the medical field you will ever experience.
