Mary Maloney is a vicious murderer who killed her husband, Patrick Maloney, in cold blood. This woman is guilty of second degree murder. The murder was intentional, it was not premeditated. Some would say because she is pregnant and how Patrick treated her when she was pregnant she should get a second chance because of her hormones. This doesn’t give her an excuse at all she should at least get sent to jail. The first reason why this is second degree murder. The murder was intentional as you may have heard in my opening statement. It was intentional because once she went downstairs, took the lamb meat out of the freezer, and raised the meat and started swinging towards her husband's head. The murder then became intentional. This woman should
First and foremost, Mary Maloney had over reacted to her husband's news. This was not the typical overreaction with whining and crying. Mary maloney had killed her husband. In the story Mary maloney receives bad news from her husband. Mary then goes downstairs to grab a leg of lamb for dinner but instead of making it, she smashed it on
I believe Mary Maloney’s actions should be condemned, by the reasoning of her actions as being wicked. Throughout the story Mary has committed homicide, plead not guilty for her husband's death and has given false statements to police officers, which under the Canadian law are all crimes. Regardless of the prior event when Patrick gives shocking news to his wife, which I assume is about leaving her, Mary’s actions are not acceptable. Even after killing Patrick there was a chance Mary could do the right thing and plead guilty, which she did not, making her continue with her bad actions. Overall, I believe Mary’s actions should be condemned because even if life is tragic there is no reason to kill her husband or a human being.
She lifted it out, and looked at it---a leg of lamb “ (Page 2). The fact that Mary Maloney can’t even feel herself doing anything, corresponds to how shocked she is. As a matter of fact, that is when her consciousness of her action momentarily fades away. She cannot accept the fact that her beloved husband would betray her like this, but in a way, the introduction to the story already tells us that their relationship isn’t strong and loving. Also, Mary is shown to have picked the very first thing she found, which was a lamb leg. This proves that she had no intention of premeditating a weapon beforehand, but instead used whatever she could find to let out her emotions. In addition, pregnant women are more emotionally unstable and because of that Mary Maloney couldn’t handle the stress of the news her husband told her. The final quote that proves her temporary insanity is, “She stepped back, waiting, and the strange thing was that he remained standing there for at least four or five seconds. Then he crashed onto the carpet. The violence of the crash, the noise, the small table overturning, helped to bring her out of the shock… It was extraordinary, now, how clear her mind became all of a sudden. She began thinking very fast. As the wife of a detective, she knew what the punishment would be…In fact, it would be a relief. On the other hand, what about the baby ” (Page 2)? Not only did she regain her consciousness, moments after her husband’s death, but she also
Mary Maloney is a sympathetic character because she covered up Patrick’s death to protect her baby. All of the tricking and deceiving she did was to save her unborn child from what could have happened as a result of her actions. She did not know what the laws were for murdered with unborn babies and she did not want to find out. Dahl states, “ What were the laws about murderers with unborn children? Did they kill both-mother and child? Or did they wait until the tenth month? Mary Maloney didn’t know. And she certainly wasn’t prepared to take a chance” (3). Mary’s number one concern was for her baby. She did not want
Though she did not commit the murder herself, she played an integral role in the murder by luring Russell Douglas on Whidbey Island to be ambushed by her boyfriend. By luring Russell to be killed by Huden, she should have been charged with aiding and abetting, which, according to the Washington State Legislature RCW 46.64.048 states, “Every person who commits, attempts to commit, conspires to commit, or aids or abets in the commission of any act declared by this title to be a traffic infraction or a crime, whether individually or in connection with one or more other persons or as principal, agent, or accessory, shall be guilty of such offense” (RCW 46.64.048, ). This means that she should have been charged with first-degree murder, but since she accepted the plea bargain, she received a reduced sentence with only 4-years of prison time. Though this case led to the conviction of the guilty suspects involved, there are instances where innocent individuals are wrongly convicted and later found to be innocent. One such case involves a man named Michael Morton, who was recently exonerated after being wrongly convicted of killing his wife 25-years
Mary Maloney has just bludgeoned her husband to death with a leg of lamb. A rather unusual and brutal crime to say the least. Is she criminally responsible? The most common defense in murder trials is the insanity defense, which states that the defendant is not criminally responsible due to insanity. Could Mary be insane? Well, the answer is probably not. According to www.brandongaille.com , 88% of insanity defendants are found to be clinically “sane” by the state. I think Mary Maloney is a criminal, who is aware of, and responsible for her actions due to the fact that Mary attempts to manipulate the order of events, Mary attempts to give the officers alcohol, and Mary has the murder weapon disposed of. All of this evidence portrays malicious intent and that she understands the gravity of the situation.
While doing her everyday routine, and waiting for her husband little did she know this would be his last day coming home. At about ten minutes till five she heard Patrick’s car arrive. Marry started her day like any other sewing and greeting Patrick at the door. After she poured him a drink he finished it fast and got back up to get another. Patrick then told Mary he was leaving her for another woman, in this case she had a sudden reaction. With all the opportunities present, she did something she never thought she would do. She killed her husband with malice causing her to be guilty of second degree murder.
Mary Surratt is guilty and should’ve been executed. There are many reasons why Mary Surratt is guilty and should’ve been executed.
In Washington, the occupants of Mary Surratt's boardinghouse were arrested, questioned, and searched. They were getting ready to transports the women to headquarters when Lewis Powell knocked on the door of the boardinghouse. He was wielding a pickax. He told the detectives that Mrs. Surratt hired him to dig a gutter for her and he needed to know what time to start. But Lewis Powell was caught in a lie. Mary told the detectives that she never hired anyone to dig anything. Knowing he will not be able to fight back without getting him self killed he surrendered. His capture was the first major break through in the manhunt. That day, the soldiers arrested Powell, Mary Surratt, her daughter, Anna, Lewis Weichmann, and the rest of the boarders.
killed him. She admitted to shooting him and fleeing the crime. The jury found her guilty and she
A woman by the name Michele Wanko was charged with involuntary manslaughter, aggravated assault, and possessing an instrument of crime. Michele shot and killed her husband. Michele and her husband William Wanko lived in Philadelphia. It was a night when these two decided to put the children to bed and have a few drinks. They both had been drinking that night, for exactly six hours straight. They were drinking vodka and juice all night long, now with drinking that long period of time, the couple had to have been drunk. Because someone constantly drinking for a long period of time, there is going to be some type of impact from the alcohol. William wanted to teach his wife how to shoot a gun, and they decided to go into the basement and begin shooting. When she retrieved the gun from their safe, she instantly aimed the gun at her husband and shot him in his chest. He looked at her and asked her why she shot him before collapsing on the ground. The police were called, and William was pronounced dead at the hospital and Michele was charged. Some may look at this case different and
The worse type of homicide is first degree murder. First degree murder is when a person intentionally and organized a killing on another person. If a person commits first degree murder, the person cam face from 20-60 years in prison. If factors are present, you can face up to life in prison. The death penalty is not an option because the death sentence has been the death sentence has been eliminated in Illinois. Based on this evidence, Mary did intentionally kill another person being her husband, however this was not
From what I apprehended from the story, I am confident that Mary Maloney is insane. My explanation as to why I think Mary Maloney is psychotic is as followed. First off, on page 1 the author illustrated the way Mary Maloney felt in the presence of her man. “She loved to luxuriate in the presence of this man, and to feel - almost as a sunbather feels the sun- that warm male glow that came out of him when they were alone together. She loved him for the way he sat loosely in a chair, for the way he came in a door, or moved slowly across the room with long strides. She loved the intent, far look in his eyes when they rested on her, the funny shape of the mouth, and especially the way he remained silent about his tiredness.” I used this quote to justify that Mary Maloney is bizarre because in my point view, what kind of wife observes and speaks of her husband in such a way? I do not think typically hear women identify every single characteristic of their significant other, showing that Mary Maloney is not sane.
To start off, it can be clearly seen from the short story that Mary Maloney is guilty. She makes a conscious effort to make sure she reacts as if she has not committed this crime in the text “Lamb to Slaughter” she says, “If she finds anything unusual or terrible when she got home, then it would be a shock and she would have to react with grief and horror.”(Dahl 383) By her stating this it shows that she knows she is guilty and that she killed her husband. The main reason I chose this quote was that it shows that she knows what she is talking about and that she has to act like this otherwise she will be caught and
This is where the reader knows more then the characters, having seen the murder from Mary’s point of view and now watching the police officers discuss the crime. Also ironic, is that the police officers are doing Mary a huge favour by eating the evidence, making her practically undiscoverable. What is also special about the story, is that in the very beginning, Mary Maloney is described as a weak woman, only devoted to her husband and submissively in love with him. The reader is completely shocked when she murders her husband.
