ITT TECHNICAL INSTITUE Pedophile Week 3 M.Phaxaisithideth 8/13/2014 According to a website, Wikipedia, “The term appears in a section titled "Violation of Individuals under the Age of Fourteen” which focuses on the forensic psychiatry aspect of child sexual offenders in general (Wikipedia, 2014).” Kraft-Ebing, A Viennese psychiatrist, concluded in his findings that a pedophile is known to have either of the three traits, they can either inherit it through heredity, their main purpose and target is mainly young children and mainly a pedophile don’t normal interact or have intercourse with children, they only touch and befriend a children, winning the child’s trust, resulting in the child performing sexual act towards the pedophile. Pedophile comes in all walks of life, from …show more content…
They can be doctors, lawyers, your church priest, your neighbors, who knows, it can even be the person sitting next to your in the morning while you’re having your favorite cup of coffee and Starbucks. A pedophile can either be men or women ranging from the age of 16 and all the way up. A person who lurks around the corner waiting to prey on their next victims usually have some kind of mental illness, which they think engaging in a sexual act with a child is normal to them, which a normal person wouldn’t think to do. According to Wilson and Cox (1983), "The paedophiles emerge as significantly higher on Psychoticism, Introversion and Neuroticism as age-matched controls (Wikipedia, 2014)”. A person that has an introverted personality, tend to seek being around children is less threatening to them as being around adults their age. So a person that has a pedophile profile may usually carry this personality. Pedophile is
The American Psychiatric Association 's Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-IV) characterizes pedophilia as intermittent sexually stirring dreams, rash cravings, or practices including sexual acts with a kid and that happen over a time of no less than six months. Much of the
Emotional congruence implies that the offenders emotional and needs correspond to the characteristics of a child. That is, sex with children is emotionally satisfying for the offender. Here, Finkelhor (1984) suggests that men are socialized to behave in a dominant and powerful manner in sexual relationships, and implies that characteristics of children (small, young, week) act as a cue for the availability of them as sexual partners (Ward, Polascheck & Beech, 2006). In support of that notion, Howells (1994) pointed out that it is not uncommon in clinical practice for child molesters to report an affinity for children. A study by Howells (1979) indicates that child sex offenders are more preoccupied with dominance in their constructions of relationships than controls, and view children as non-domineering and hence attractive (see
Pedophilic tendencies tend to be lifelong which is why it is important to analyze childhood. Many individuals whom are considered pedophilic report being aware since childhood. As a child, it is
Most people consider pedophiles to be anyone who has committed a sex offense against a child and that all pedophiles will commit this offense. In both cases that is, at best, a half truth. The DSM-5, which is a tool that outlines the diagnostic criteria for a given disorder, defines pedophilic disorder as, “a paraphilia involving intense and recurrent sexual urges towards and fantasies about prepubescent children that have either been acted upon or which cause the person with the attraction distress or interpersonal difficulty.” With the latter half of this definition, we begin to open up to the idea that there are those who have sexual interests in children who have had no form of inappropriate contact with a child, but rather just have their daily life affected by the feelings that they are having toward
Finkelhor (2009) gives the most inclusive definition – “child sexual abuse is the use of force/coercion of a sexual nature either when the victim is younger than age 13 and the age difference between the victim and the perpetrator is at least 5 years, or when the victim is between 13 and 16 and the age difference between the victim and perpetrator is at least 10 years”. Child sexual abusers are typically someone the child or family knows. “The most important distinction among child sexual abusers is whether they are pedophilic or non-pedophilic, because pedophilia is a strong predictor of sexual recidivism” (Simons, 2015).
Most psychological research on the personalities of pedophiles consists of only clinical descriptions and case presentations. Bell and Hall represented the clinical approaches to the study of the personalities of pedophiles. They analyzed the dreams of a pedophiles and made suggestions about their characteristics. “ The inference from their case report was that pedophiles have a basic character disorder shown by schizoid and passive traits as well as a severe dread of adult sexuality.”(Bell & Hall 1971).
However, paedophile is the first thing that comes to mind when thinking of child sexual abuse.”
This means the act of grooming child victims by sex offenders is seen on a regular basis among this type of offender. In a research paper written by Dr. Jim Tanner and Stephen Brake titled Exploring Sex Offender Grooming, the act of grooming is also said to be accompanied by a complex set of behaviors. (Tanner and Brake, 2013) Some of the child grooming behaviors include: telling the child they are loved, taking an interest in all of the things the child does and says, providing the child with pornography (which is seen more with male victims), and providing the child with gifts. Another grooming method used by child sex offenders is victim desensitization. This is done through the offender using touch, conversations about sex, and various forms of persuasion. (Elliott, Brown, Kilcoyne, 1995) Some of the adult grooming behaviors used by child sex offenders include: establishing a reason to interact with children in less supervised situations, and establishing a reason for isolated individualized attention. (Tanner and Brake,
They include teacher/lover, male coerced/male accompanied, and predisposed (2007). A description of the teacher/lover includes those who abuse an adolescent via a position of power, they do not view themselves as criminals and often view the encounter as an act of kindness; they are more likely to deny the negative impact of the behavior, and the offender is likely to have been in relationships with sexually abusive partners (2007). A description of predisposed female offenders include that they initiate the sexual abuse, the victims tend to be their own children, they have serious psychological disorders, and they have a history of sexual and physical abuse (2007). Male coerced/male accompanied description include that they are in an abusive relationship in which the male coerces them to offend, they have a low self-esteem, and they often abuse drugs and/or alcohol (2007). Lastly, are the cyber offenders who use the internet to commit their sexual offenses against children which have 4 types they are collectors, travelers, manufactures, and chatters. Characteristics of these types include taking pornographic images of children and making them accessible through the internet; sending children pornographic images; and luring or soliciting children online
There is a continuous debate regarding the etiology of pedophilia. Today many think of pedophilia as a mental issue of deviance, but many studies are showing a combination of factors. For example, early sexual conduct, history of sexual misuse and pre-birth or early adolescence neurodevelopmental issues are attributed to the etiology of pedophilia (Goode, 2011). Researchers and therapists feel that sexual attraction to children is more of a biological cause that is beyond the pedophiles ability to control the sexual desire (Kaplan, 2015). Studies have revealed a strong indication of a neuro biological problem in the structure and function of frontal, temporal, and limbic areas of the brain (Tenbergen, 2015). How abnormality is socially developed is integral to any comprehension of sexual conduct
When people hear stories about sex offenders on the news, they often ponder what drives a person to sexually offend another human being. In this paper, I will discuss the topic of child molesters and what drives them to become the person they become. A child molester is a person—male or female—who touches or has sex with a child under the age of 18 (Lanning.1992). Many label child molesters with the picture of a messy old man, crinkly parka coat, sitting around the school play area with a sack of treat waiting to trap innocent little children. For a few, the kid molester is as more bizarre to his casualty and not a father having intercourse with his little girl. For others, the tyke molester is one who opens himself to or strokes youngsters
The way in which sexual crimes are treated within the criminal justice system of the United States has changed drastically throughout time. Back in the 1970s there was no official protocol or way of dealing with sexual crimes, in fact most sexual assault cases never even made it into a court of law. One reason is that the definition of rape was structured in a way that many rapes that occurred were legally deemed not to be rapes due to terminology. The old law was designed to protect rape suspects by requiring victims to present independent evidence and corroboration. These laws were implemented because women were not trusted at the time and the thought of the word of a women being able to put a man into prison seemed preposterous. Even when cases were brought into court the victims sexual history could be brought up during the criminal trail strewing the juries vision of victims leading to victim blaming. But in some cases the defendants history could be blocked from entry into the courtroom yet again favoring the rape suspect. Not only that, but the lack of technology made collecting evidence of the rape even harder (Jackson).
The applicant is denied parole. Three (3) years served is not enough time for the applicant to be rehabilitation. He is a pedophile. A person convicted of a sexual abusing a child requires evaluation and long term treatment programs. The treatment programs are extensive and require licensed professionals. Pedophiles have mental illness that causes sexual desire of little boys and girls. Society cannot risk other child becoming a victim.
The American Psychiatric Association has declared that pedophilia is no longer thought of as a mental disorder. In early studies, (DSM-III-R), pedophilia was characterized as a disorder if "the person acted out on the urges, or was markedly distressed by them" (Medinger 2). Nowadays, the diagnostic description is that pedophilia is a disorder if the offender is mentally impaired, agitated, or experiencing guilt as a result of what he is doing. In other words, a pedophile can "play" all he wants until he becomes irrational about it. Outwardly, the pedophile may, in today's society, seem to be a perfectly normal human being. Pedophilia, like homosexuality and transvestitism, is just a sexual preference (APA).
Everyday at work, I have at least three patients ask me for boxes of Kleenex. The hospital does not carry that brand, but of course I know they mean that they would just like a box of tissues. Kleenex has become a term that most people use in reference to tissues, although we all know that all tissues are not from the Kleenex brand. I have the same scenario for pedophiles. Many people classify all pedophiles as child molesters, when in fact, all pedophiles are not child molesters. According to the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fifth Edition (DSM-5), pedophilic disorder is a diagnosis assigned to adults who are sexually attracted to prepubescent children (APA). With that being said, pedophilia is a mental disorder, not a crime and I believe they should not be incarcerated in a correctional facility.
