“A girl fell off the fourteenth floor!” That was the response I received when I inquired about the ambulances outside my dorm at the beginning of my Sophomore year of college. The truth of what happened was much more unsettling. Instead of an accident, the girl had actually jumped from her dorm window, leaving behind a note saying ending her life was the only way to stop her pain. I had known her briefly when she was my Orientation Leader the year before. Her friends and family all expressed shock and disbelief. There was no warning, no signs at all she was struggling or suffering. In the midst of an outpouring of grief and empathy, many students admitted that they also had suicidal thoughts, but likewise would never ask for help. Growing up …show more content…
While there are many mental health organizations, we chose NAMI because it provides a way for us to directly help those suffering from mental illness. NAMI trains and certifies student facilitators who can give advice and support. On a campus where the predominant view was “No one wants to be known as needing professional help,” we hoped that students might be more comfortable talking to a peer. Peer counselors cannot replace mental health professionals, but they can serve as a stepping-stone towards more comprehensive counseling. Setting up these counseling sessions, however, proved difficult. The funding provided by the school's Activities Board was not enough for all members to attend NAMI training sessions. I had to organize bake sales and even pay out of my own pocket to ensure that no one who wanted to become a facilitator was turned away. Counseling sessions require a dedicated space that’s both quiet and secluded. Knowing the Psychology Department is interested in promoting mental health, I reached out to the professors. I was able to convince them the value of peer counseling and they offered us the use of their empty classrooms and offices. With walk-in sessions that require no prior appointment, our group and one-on-one counseling both proved popular with
According to Emile Durkheim there are four different types of suicide. They are egoistic suicide, altruistic suicide, anomic suicide, and fatalistic suicide. Although I personally have never thought about committing suicide, my life has changed because of two girls who decided to take their own lives. I grew up in the small town of Philomath, Oregon so everybody knows everybody. In October of 2013 a freshman named Lilly Stagner committed suicide. We weren’t personally friends, but I saw her in the halls each day and she seemed like a happy girl. On the morning of October 23 everyone came to school, but something just didn’t seem normal. In first period our teacher read us a letter about how Lilly had passed away and that there were counseling
What does it mean to be a counselor of psychology? How does training and education that a counselor focused on helping help people without mental problems? To whom do the services of counseling services appeal too and seek service assistance. What roles can a counselor fulfill in the public health field.
Twenty-five percent of mental health service users reported “some form of discrimination from those charged with their care” (Bates & Stickley, 2012, p. 570). Student nurses working in the community setting observed the stigmatization of character blemish placed on individuals with mental illness by members of society and fellow health care workers. When working with the youth coalition of Shawnee, Oklahoma to devise a plan to help suicidal students at Shawnee High School, the youth revealed some of the student body’s beliefs about suicide and depression. The youth reported hearing other students tell suicidal students to “get over it” or to just “be more positive,” thus implying that the depressed student was not trying hard enough. They said that others students have joked about committing suicide or have jokingly told one another to kill themselves. The youth report that this joking has led to a sense of complacency and has decreased the seriousness of suicide in their school’s community. Members of the youth coalition also described the social isolation to which suicidal students are subjected. Even when suicidal students reached out for help from fellow students or teachers, they were often turned away because students and teachers did not know how to talk to a suicidal student This lack of knowledge resulted
Being in college you sometimes encounter many difficult situations that can become very unbearable. As a student many of us find ourselves feeling hopeless, alone, and a sense of emptiness. Some students enter a period where they become very depressed because they can’t cope with their feelings. If my roommate or my friend were to express thoughts of suicide I would try and convince them to seek help. I would accompany them to see a counselor and to make sure they are okay. In this day and age someone confessing to having thoughts of suicide is not a joke. I remember one of my friends told me she walked in on her roommate passed out on the floor. When she was rushed to Oswego Hospital she told my friend she wanted to commit suicide. It is
With the pressure that our generation endures, we are divided amongst the mentally stable and well, the not so stable. For a large portion, almost one million people each year, it has resulted in many lives lost. “Suicide is the third leading cause of death for people age 15 to 24” with “someone committing suicide every 18 minutes in the United States” (Twenge 108). It can be challenging to understand why someone would choose to take their own their life. “Suicide is a desperate attempt to escape suffering that has become unbearable” (“Suicide Prevention” par 3). With so many unrealistic expectations, no wonder it is so hard for us. Many people who face suicidal thoughts are too scared of mentioning their feelings to others, although most do not realize that quite a few individuals around them are facing the same anxiety. Just recently, my close friend Chris began showing signs of possible suicidal actions. This was new for me and I was never able to fully comprehend how or why he felt that way. “No one will be able to understand how he feels,”
There are several requirements Alabama has in order to be licensed to counsel in Alabama. Their educational requirements include: Applicants must have a Master's degree or higher in counseling from a CACREP or CORE accredited program. Whether an individual is trying to be LPC or ALC certified (Associate Licensed Counselor), they need to have earned at least 3,000 hours of supervised experience in professional counseling settings with a board approved supervisor. However, applicants may subtract 1,000 hours of the required professional experience for every 15 graduate semester hours obtained beyond the master's degree from a regionally accredited academic institution, as long as the coursework is clearly related to the field of professional
Federal and state agencies have established peers with lived experience as mental health providers over the last 25 years
Let me introduce myself: I am from Hong Kong, and spent four years at a boarding school in Canada. In high school, I participated in Studio Art AP; the Orchestra and Strings Ensemble; was on the Squash team (similar to racquet ball) and was the captain (equivalent of a teacher’s assistant) of Drawing and Painting. However, aside from co-curricular activates I was highly involved in the school community: I designed all of the invitations for our school’s gallery opening, and was in SPARC (Service Peer Assistance Resource Counselor) in which I was councilor to my peers.
There are times a counselor might need to decline to provide counseling services to some clients/students who request them. a) In what circumstances might this be appropriate and ethical and how should that process be handled by the counselor? b) When would it be unethical for a counselor to decline to provide services? Support each response with a minimum of 3 relevant ACA and/or ASCA codes and the textbook.

I am going to kill myself, has that thought of committing suicide ever crossed your head? Self-destruction, taking one's own life, killing oneself, they all have the same meaning the action of killing oneself intentionally. I think suicide holds different meanings to people such as a mistake, a cry for help, a desperate action. At the age of 10 years old was the first time I heard about suicide. One cold night, I believe around the beginning of December, my parents received a call stating that my cousin had committed suicide. I lived in Mexico at the time and I did not know how to react to the situation. At first I was excited because we were going on a trip but then when we arrived to my cousin’s house it all changed. As I looked around I felt like the hairs behind my neck stood up and got as hard as needles. All I was able to see were sad, confused and depressed faces. I found out he hung himself in his room. I did not know what to do, all I asked was “why did he do that?” in a really passive voice. I never really got an answer and now that I am older we never bring the topic up. When you think about it, suicide, does not seem like a big deal among college students due to the fact that it is never really talked about in the media. Suicide has become a serious and critical national issue between college students that we should take into consideration.
Knowing how to effectively communicate with people is not only an important life skill it can assist those who are struggling and feel alone. Peer counseling gave me the opportunity to encourage students at my own school and help return them to a state of mental health, while also enhancing my language and communication skills. I decided to join peer counseling as a way to become more involved at my school but I would have never imagined how it has helped me grow and have a desire to comfort and make a difference in people's lives. Peer counseling is an intense course, where I was taught in depth about the physical and psychological effects of tragedies, such as: physical and emotional abuse, teen pregnancy, suicide, depression and many other
Peer counseling is giving advice to a problem to a person who is equal to you either in rank, status or ability. I this case we are focusing on teenager (Persons of ages between 13 to 19 years). Sadly, a considerable number of teenagers find counseling boring but its time they change their mindset and join the league. While life has no guarantees, it is all about yourself and how you impact on someone`s life. While many teenagers may wonder how to start counseling, it is all about interest and believing in yourself. Young as you may be, full of vitality at the threshold of puberty, and give yourself some dignity by joining this noble practice. You can do this by first joining the peer educators club in your school.
