In Homer's The Odyssey, Penelope is depicted as a woman of many trades. She can be described as the "ideal" woman. She is a wife, a mother, a heroine, and a queen. She has great willpower and is very resourceful. She is loyal, hospitable, and has pride in her home and family. She can ultimately been seen as a pillar that will not crumble, no matter how hard the earth shakes.

Throughout this epic, Penelope is faced with many obstacles that try and break her down. One main obstacle is that of Odysseus' absence. This obstacle shows her ultimate loyalty to Odysseus. Penelope holds family close to her heart. When Odysseus departs twenty years ago their son Telemachus is only a baby. She raises him by herself. She makes sure that he learns the morals and beliefs of his father. This includes a strong sense of commitment to his country. Twenty years later he has grown physically but he is still trying to discover himself. When he leaves to find out information about his father, his mother is extremely worried and wished he hadn't gone. This shows that she is compassionate and cares about the welfare of her son. He is also in danger because the suitors would rather see him dead. When Penelope finds out what the suitors have in plan for Telemachus her motherly instincts kick in and she goes to Laertes and asks him to plead with the suitors. Again, this shows how Penelope holds family high.

One trait that Penelope possesses is that she is clever. Some people may see Penelope as hopeless. She has had enough brains to misguide the suitors for four years to postpone marriage. Also when she comes up with the idea of the contest with the bow she knows what she is doing. She knows that Odysseus is the only one who has a shot at being able to string the bow. She also has been able to keep the suitors hooked with promises and hints for four years but never actually choosing one. This takes great skill and trickery.
