Pepe the Frog, The Reaction Image One of the easiest ways to describe digital folklore is to look at different examples of it. Personally, my favorite example of digital folklore is memes. Memes are one of the most common and enjoyable forms of digital folklore. Memes are great because they have the ability to express feeling and emotion, spread information on current events, and to make people laugh. From a digital folklorist aspect memes are an ideal piece of folklore as they are spread globally, instantly and have many purposes and unwritten rules. One of my favorite memes, which works best as a reaction, is “Pepe the Frog”. Pepe is one of the most comical way to express your feeling towards something as he has so many different emotions and variations. “Pepe the Frog” is not only a good folklore piece but also has an origin …show more content…
In the comic, “Pepe the Frog” is captioned with, “feels good man” (Figure 1) which is later used to create the first Pepe meme. In this meme, he has a happy smile and was used as a great reaction to things that feel good. Later on, Pepe was then altered to have a frown captioned with “feels bad man” which started the alteration and development into all the different facial expressions of Pepe today. “Pepe the Frog” has been used by many to show a facial expression even better than words with so many different varieties. Currently “Pepe the Frog” is considered a hate symbol by the Anti-Defamation league (ADL). Reasons why “Pepe the Frog” is considered a hate symbol by the ADL is because of its use from “alt right” groups in anti-Semitic settings. Due to having so many different versions, there has even begun a trend of finding “Rare Pepes” which are “Pepe the Frog” memes that are so unique that they are not found on the internet. With the wide spread popularity of “Pepe the Frog”, there is bound to be specific rules to make a particular image a “Pepe the Frog”
“Hop-Frog”, written by Edgar Allan Poe, displays the mood of resentment. The first example of this is shown when the story says, “Hop-Frog … had been forcibly carried off from their respective homes in adjoining provinces, and sent as presents to the king, by one of his ever-victorious generals” (2). This passage is important to the mood because it shows us the first event that caused resentment within Hop-Frog. Being carried off away from your home to go serve a foreign and distant king is very hard to deal with and most likely caused anger within Hop-Frog. Another example can be seen when the story says, “They are a great king and his seven privy counselors, -- a king who does not scruple to strike a defenseless girl and his seven counselors
With the use of Pathos, he portrays gun owners as childlike and foolish which is where "Security Blanket". He uses the "blanket" to represent the NRA and the Bill of Rights to demonstrate that they use pretexts as a cover up and keep their guns. So, with that information, he portrays logos, since he made clear the childlike behavior of some gun owners and their lack of reasoning in the gun control issue. This specific political cartoon is mainly meant for people who are for weapon control. offers generally to those who are for weapon control laws.
They are meant to appeal to Logos, the logical side in the readers, and Pathos, the emotional side or more specifically ability to empathize. Many cartoonists make satires and ironic cartoons that are meant to bring something important to the artists into public knowledge, and some just want to poke fun at some habits or traditions of other cultures and religion. But there are those who take it too far, which is where Logos comes in. Of course most readers, or at least the ones the cartoons are not ridiculing, find it very easy to just laugh, but as demonstrated by Sacco, it’s very easy to cross the line between a harmless, informative joke and a borderline cruel mockery of something that is important or sacred to others. Pathos on the other hand is appealed to by asking to empathize with the Jews that were been persecuted for simply been more successful during a time when Germany had high rates of unemployment. Sacco obviously wants us to see that in the right context almost anything can be hurtful, which is backed up by the statement: "when we draw a line, we are often crossing one
They use their artistic skills as an aid to convey messages to people of all ages. Political cartoons appear all over the internet and social media. The cartoonists usually distort several of the characters’ physical features in order to emphasize a belief or criticize an idea in the society. A recent political cartoon depicts Donald Trump with a long nose. The cartoonist tried to influence the viewers into believing that Donald Trump is a liar, and he does not fit to be president. It might seem that the cartoonist drew the cartoon just to make the viewers laugh, but his goal was actually to present the reasons why US citizens should not vote for Trump. This drawing might not immediately cause the viewers to alter their attitude towards Trump, but the drawing will appear in the viewer's’ mind whenever the presidential election is mentioned. Sometimes, the cartoon might even influence the viewer to vote for Clinton instead of Donald Trump. The more entertaining a cartoon appear, the faster the picture will spread throughout social media and the internet. This will allow the cartoonist to spread his ideas to a greater amount of
Pepe has recently been depicted as Adolf Hitler and a member of the white supremacist KKK.
In “The Most Embarrassing Viral or Meme,” I also put effort on analyzing by showing reasons that I am not an intended audience of “Average Homeboy.” Therefore, the readers can clearly understand the message conveyed by my analysis.
The cartoon on the right was posted by cartoon artist Piraro on August 10, 2010. The cartoonist's opinion is ironic because
Memes in today 's society are used to mock things and often are satire. For my project I choose the memes of Willy Wonka and ‘I don’t always... but when I do I’. These are used to mock morality and the triviality of the upper class and privileged respectively. These are both issues that we face in society.
Martin luther king Jr. used logos and pathos in these two text to help audience understand what he's trying to preach or explain. In King’s speech the types of appeals he uses are logos and pathos. “But one hundred years later, the Negro is still not free. ”(King 261)This logo shows that still one hundred years later african americans still don't have the freedom they deserve.
Thomas Nast, 1840-1902, was a political cartoonist who is known by some historians as “the father of modern political American political cartooning” (Simpson, ANBO). This is due in part because Nast was the person who created the donkey symbol to represent the Democratic Party and elephant symbol to represent the Republican Party. Another reason why Nast earned this title and therefore should be studied is that he changed the way cartoonists delivered their context. Before the Civil War cartoonist relied on dialogue rather than images to get the message across, however; Nast used the picture to convey the message of his cartoons (Simpson, ANBO). Since his cartoons did not need words to convey the message he was able to reach the illiterate
Matt Furie, the creator of Pepe the Frog, addressed, "It’s completely insane that Pepe has been labeled a symbol of hate, and that racists and anti-Semites are using a once peaceful frog-dude from my comic book as an icon of hate" (Dicker) after the Anti-Defamation League declared the meme to be a hate symbol, highlighting one of the most prevalent issues today -- ethnic discrimination. Pepe the frog, a meme, is an indicator of the culture in today’s internet-driven society. Memes consist of funny pictures with witty captions, designed to amuse viewers by telling a joke or mentioning a relatable circumstance. That someone would use a meme to dehumanize- demoralize through deprivation of human qualities, personality, or spirit (“Dehumanization”)- an entire group of people based on something as arbitrary as skin color is an indicator of how serious and widespread this issue is. Ethnic discrimination is a dehumanizing act; when individuals or groups are treated as inferior
Why are comics not appreciated as much as the dry narratives of novels in the literary world? A comic is composed of symbols to express concepts shared by all people in their own social environment, and provide more tools than conventional art to truly show artistic intention.
Cartoons have been a prominent and interesting apparatus for politics throughout the ages. Political movements, parties, and groups using propaganda to further their beliefs dates back to the eighteenth and nineteenth century. Though America faces an austere history, lighthearted propaganda colors its decades and gives them life. Political cartoons are so widely used in America that they have become a significant piece of pop culture. Moreover, because of their ability to capture the reader’s attention, propaganda is exploited throughout politics. The cartoons are wonders of the human imagination; illustrators create comical images and intertwine profound political opinions to influence their viewer’s mind. For example, one movement that abundantly grew from propaganda was the women’s rights movement. The artists of the seemingly despised cause drew controversial cartoons that set a fire in the hearts of women all over the world. Consequently, the same cartoons ignited a passionate war between women who wanted freedom, and those who believed that women could not handle that freedom. Through the use of colorful concepts and daring expressions, political cartoons display the influence of the women’s rights movement throughout history, while the cartoons of Anti-Feminists demonstrates the world’s reaction to the movement.
Social media has gained major popularity for memes. A meme is a humorous image along with text that is spread rapidly by Internet users. A meme can be about anything such as, Cam Newton crying like a baby during the Super Bowl, politics, or Steve Harvey announcing the wrong winner
Pepe the Frog, the popular internet meme adopted by the ultra-conservative alt-right movement, has officially been deemed a hate symbol.
