Performance Enhancing is just another way for athletes to find success in sports. The drug effects many athletes in their daily life, which changes the way that they are viewed as role models. Reasons for the judgement towards them could have many different views and Sportsmanship tops them all. Their daily behavior on the sporting field causes people to judge their personal life based on their sports ability. There are many different reasons that doping in sports should be illegal such as it gives an athlete an unfair advantage over other athletes, it also disperse athletes as role models and can have adverse health effects. Steroids give an unfair advantage to athletes that are not as equally talented as others that have worked hard and used
Performance-Enhancing drugs are an unnatural way of changing one's body, and the effects can be life altering, sometimes better yet always, in the end, much worse. It is for this reason why major league sports have put strict rules in place suspending athletes who use these drugs; the Olympics ban these athletes for life. These drugs harm the bodies and minds of athletes, and they are banned to protect their health for their benefit and for the sports as well.
A number of prominent athletes have recently experienced a 'fall from grace,' because of the revelation that they used performance-enhancing drugs. Perhaps the most famous example of this phenomenon is Lance Armstrong. In an advertisement for Nike that his former sponsor now no doubt regrets, Armstrong is shown asking the viewer "what am I on? I'm on my bike, busting my ass six hours a day." Professional cycling is often cited as one of the sports in which doping is most endemic to its subculture, however a number of professional sports have been embroiled in drug scandals. Because of the many revelations about the number of baseball players who used steroids to get their record-breaking statistics, the 1990s are often called the 'steroid' era of baseball. The Olympic track and field star Marian Jones was stripped of her medals, after finally admitting to the use of performance-enhancing drugs (Lardon 2008). "Despite the health risks, and despite the regulating bodies' attempts to eliminate drugs from sport, the use of illegal substances is widely known to be rife. It hardly raises an eyebrow now when some famous athlete fails a dope test" (Savulescu, Foddy, & Clayton 2004).
How fast do we need to see a person run or bike, how far do we need to see a baseball hit or how hard do we need to see a football player tackled. The human body is an incredible machine in itself, why do we need to push that machine to limits that are not natural. Performance enhancing drugs allow for several advantages for athletes they assist in the rapid development of muscle mass and strength, they enhance focus and timing and most importantly to a professional athlete some performance enhancing drugs allow for quicker recovery time from injuries. Athletes are vulnerable; one injury could end the career that they have worked their entire lives for, and so the ability to recover at a much faster rate than a non-doping athlete is an advantage unto itself.
Do you want to want to become the peak athlete that you know your body is capable of? Well, this paper will not do that for you, but it will tell you how, and it will tell you why it should be legal to do so. Doping in sports is one of the most extensive debates within the realm of athletics. Whether it be injecting anabolic steroids, consuming them, or blood doping, athletes will do drugs. Doping has no effect on the viewership of the sport. Athletes can always find ways to cheat the system, and trying to prevent the use seems impossible. The use of performance enhancing drugs (PEDs) should be legalized, as long as it is allowed under medical supervision.
Besides the long list of negative side effects that steroids bring, they also ruin the integrity of sports. Sports are all about working hard and striving through adversity in order to reach a goal. Steroids only give athletes a shortcut that is an easy way out to reaching that goal. Before performance enhancing drugs became a world wide phenomenon athletes were forced to use their only option of working out naturally and pushing themselves beyond their limits in order to be the best that they can be. Now a day’s, many athletes do not have the same dedication and work ethic to earn their results the old fashion and natural way. Whether or not the use of performance enhancing drugs should be allowed in sports should depend on the purpose and intentions of their use.
According to Dave Anderson in his article “ 10 Reasons Performence Enhancing Drugs should be Legal”, He states “Sports fans want to see their team’s best players throw 100 mph fast balls or another equaling or breaking national records”. He also states “ We the sports fans don’t want to see normal things, hear normal stories or witness normal events we want to watch extraordinary athletes do extraordinary physical feats because that what makes us entertained.” When we spent our hard earned money to go see a Baseball game or a basketball game, we want to see events that will shock us like a player breaking records. We want to see actions by a player that we would never epic that player to do and make the trip to see the game worth taking. According to Tyler Lenco in his article “ Lenco: Why should steroids be allowed in sports”, He states “ the purpose of sports is to entertain”. He believes that “Steroid are called Performence Enhancing Drugs for a reason”. He also mentions how steroids are arguably the reason why Barry Bond has had so many homeruns in his career. Lastly, he states “ It’s the unspoken secret thats bin supplying us with some of out most memorable and entertaining moments throughout history”. Us fans always hope to witness a player break records during a game. Steroids allows us fans to have a better to witness player of a new generation to try and accomplish what other couldn’t which is records that have bin held by legends for decades. What this argument fails to consider is the health of the athletes that consume this drug and the advantages that the drug gives. Steroids cause to cause the user to develop many mental and physical problem that may lead them to there death. Men can develop female characterstics and, vise versa when it come to women. Steroids can also put user in a state of depression that can lead to the point that they might won’t to commit
The use Performance Enhancing drugs ( PEDS) in the sports world by some athletes can have an impact on more than just themselves. More often than not athletes take PEDS to get an advantage over the opposing team and/or athlete. They may win, however there are many problems and health risks that come with taking PEDS. Athletes are role models to the younger generation, set the example that if you take PEDS then you will win. The athletes want to win so badly that they will cheat by using PEDS and risk losing their title. This forces the sport organizations in charge to constantly test for PEDS being used in sports. Resulting in a constant terdertader of the use PEDS and PEDS not being in sports. I think that if there was no more
Performance enhancing drugs have been ruining competitive sports for a long period of time. Starting all the way back into the first Olympic Games, 776 BC - 393 BC. Even though the drugs were not the same as they are now. The way athletes are taking them is ruining competitive sports from here on out. Performance enhancing drugs are not only a form of cheating, but they can also be very harmful and dangerous. They can lead into serious body defects and could cause death as evidenced by some athletes who have used them extensively. The established side effects and adverse reactions for men and women included acne, genital changes, water retention in tissue, yellowing of eyes and skin, oily skin, stunted growth, fetal damage, coronary artery
Many good things could come out of making doping illegal. This will bring the traditional values of sports back, and will make the sport more fair throughout. With the ban of PED’s the sport will be more liked by the youth, because they can end up being more like their “heroes”. Everyone would know just how good athletes really are and not how good a drug works. Athletes who don’t depend on the drugs will have to work harder to be more successful. Sports will become much more competitive and more fun to watch as a fan. As a whole, making performance enhancing drugs illegal will make sports better for the athletes and the
Long throughout mankind’s history there have been sports that have pushed men and women to do incredible accomplishments. These sports have always been thought of as an extremely and entertaining competitive activity as well as a celebration of human capabilities. However, with these sports there have always been things that worked to degrade the integrity of them. Some of these things include unsportsmanlike conduct, unfair rules or regulations, and in the last decade or so, cheating through the use of performance enhancing drugs (PEDs). Among these detrimental aspects in sports, PEDs are potentially the worst. These drugs offer up the risk of potentially endangering those athletes that use these drugs as well as put other athletes that do
The competition amongst professional and young athletes is all over the world and has been around for a very long time now. The desire of being a competitor is something that it is within everyone. In sports, everyone wants to be better than the next man. The competition in sports makes some people willing to do anything to be the best. Many athletes have taken the traits of being a competitor way too far and wants to raise their chance of winning and being the best. A large number of athletes use performance-enhancing drugs, such as steroids, to become the best they can be. Steroids should not be accepted in sports.
In today’s society, it is a known fact that sports are one of the main forms of entertainment for most people. Back then, sports were more for fun than anything else. They were not as huge and competitive as they are at this moment. The sports industry has become a business for the people that profit off of them such as promoters, sports apparel companies, and even the athletes turn sports into a profession. As a result, athletes can go to great lengths to succeed, as far as taking performance-enhancing drugs to obtain that which we all desire, the money, fame, glory, as well as for the passion that they possess for their own distinctive sports. Although, most people are taught as infants, that they should stop at nothing and do anything in their power to acquire what they wish for, the line between determination and insanity is extremely fine. There is such a thing as too much work and there
Many people think that taking performance enhancing drugs, such as steroids, in order to bulk up, or to perform better in their sport, is harmless. However, that is false. Steroids can lead to many health problems, such as psychological problems, hormonal problems, musculoskeletal problems, and even death (NIDA). Also, it is not fair to those who choose to not use them. It is for these reasons that the use of performance enhancing drugs should not be allowed in any sport, professional or unprofessional.
Besides the concern about safety, the doping controversy is centered on the issue of fair play. Opponents argue that athletes who use performance-enhancing substances have an unfair advantage. Many athletes choose to train and compete with nothing more than hard work and determination. For many of us, this is the way sport is meant to be. However, some athletes choose to gain an advantage over others by using substances that are banned. These athletes do not consider what they are doing to be wrong because these substances are available to everyone on the black market, so anyone can use them. Thus,
Thesis: Doping in sports should be illegal because it is unfair to other players that are not doping, it can lead to health issues, and can affect other players’ chances of a scholarship endorsement in the future.
