Through Homer’s Iliad, it is revealed that Greeks thought fighting in battle and victory constituted a good life. To them, the definition of a hero seems to be someone who can battle and be victorious in war, no matter what the cost. Heroes believe that risking their own lives as well as the lives of those surrounding them. In a way this is what they viewed as “honorable” for any Grecian warrior: one who would lay down their life for the battle. In this story, I admire Nestor for his wisdom and perseverance. Although old and frail, Nestor could always be found at the front of each battle. As I was reading, I pictured Nestor as the ‘Dumbledore’ of this story as he seemed to act with wisdom and was knowledgeable on how to be victorious in battle.
Heroes, as shown in literature, often undertake the most difficult tasks and place themselves in mortal danger in order to bring back, for themselves and their societies, both knowledge and treasure. Their stories follow “Hero Journey.” The Odyssey, as the epic story of the hero Odysseus, follows closely the complete cycle of a Hero Journey, both as a physical and as a psychological undertaking. The Hero Journey, used as a framework for both Odysseus’ physical and mental journeys, serves to bind the two together. Each of Odysseus’s physical difficulties can be viewed as a metaphor for a psychological hardship that he must overcome, and by overcoming these hardships, Odysseus matures—achieving a more complete understanding of himself and
Maria Duran Period.4 December 4th,2017 ‘’ Perseverance is stubbornness is a purpose’’(Josh Shipp).Throughout the Odyssey, Odysseus shows perseverance. But how is that the theme? The theme is that perseverance is key. For instance, if he wanted to Odysseus could have given up and stay at any of the places he was offered to stay at Kirke’s island and have everything needed to survive, but instead, he shows that he wants to go home, this shows that if you have perseverance you will achieve your goals. After Odysseus wins the war, he is set on going home and that’s exactly what he did, but how?Odysseus did have some battles such as his encounter with Polyphêmos, he could’ve let him kill him but instead, he poked his eye out and
Memories of loss trigger painful emotions for characters in both The Odyssey and Station Eleven. In Station Eleven survivors have sustained huge amounts of loss through the loss of friends, family, hobbies, houses and basic social functions such as swimming at the recreational pool. “It seems like the people who struggle the most with it are the people who remember the old world clearly,” and this is because these individuals have more concrete memories of the past, which makes the reality of the present, post-apocalyptic landscape, more shocking (Mandel, chapter 37 find page number). Find the person that said this) said that “hell is the absence of the people you long for,” which shows that memories of friends and family are some of the most
Tenacity, determination, dedication: these are some other word that describe what it means to preserver. Both went through pain and suffering to get to their goal. In the Odyssey with Odysseus, he was sent on a long change long to extensive - he was sent on an extensive journey away from home he was asked to make hard change the word hard to challenging decisions that would test his character and his decision making. The other man goes by the name of Jackie Robinson who was mocked and ridiculed for the color of his skin. Jackie just wanted to play a sport that he loved but instead he had to earn respect the long way. Perseverance is necessary for success in all aspects of life; it reminds us that things we want must be worked
In the Odyssey part 1, we are introduced to Odysseus, the son of Laertes from Ithaca. Odysseus informs us that Calypso had detained him for a long period of time. Zeus convinced Calypso to release Odysseus when in his heart all he wanted was to return home. While making the return trip home, the current took Odysseus out to sea where a gale had him drifting for days until he came to the coastline of the Lotus Eaters. Three men went ashore to find out who lived on this land.
Life is filled with many obstacles.to overcome the obstacle in life people have to have determination and courage.Determination is the will to keep going. Courage is the ability to do something that frighten you. For example Odysseus had to go through many different obstacles to get to his prophecy. It Really took courage for odysseus and his men to get pass the big angry and evil monsters.
Perseverance is a character trait that several Greek heroes have. The Odyssey, by Homer, is an epic about an Ancient Greek hero named Odysseus, who is trying to get back home to his family in Ithaca after the Trojan war. During his journey home, the greek goddess Athena helps him face his many trials that often have to do with the Gods in some way. When he finally returns, there are many suitors in his house that he kills, and then everything finally returns back to normal. Perseverance is what made Odysseus’s return back home possible, and with enough of it, one can achieve whatever they desire.
Throughout the odyssey, the Greek hero Odysseus shows which I think is the most important trait for a hero to exhibit. The trait is restraint, he shows this trait multiple times throughout the epic poem. By showing this trait it is showing how strong of a person Odysseus is.
Having showing or able to exert great bodily or muscular power;possessing the capacity for knowledge. Many people today put so much effort training to become well-built like, Michael Phelps, Simone Biles or Usain Bolt. Others train their minds to be become bright and intelligent like Steve Jobs, Albert Einstein or Mark Zuckerberg. Nobody today maintains the characteristics of both tough and brainy. They're either one or the other.
For years, people have contemplated the influence of divine power, environment, or genetics, as determining how free any individual is in making their choices. The ancient Greeks personified this force into the Fates, who shape and determine the lives of mortals. In Homer The Iliad translated by E.V. Rieu, almost every mortal in the poem is faced with the paradox of having a predetermined life and having the freedom to make their own choices. It is important to recognize that the gods don't control fate; though there are times when they consider acting against it. While immortals play their role in fulfilling fate, a character such as Achilles is faced with an option to live a long life away from warfare or live a short life of glory. Being
With the almost no recognition of classical studies in the last part of the 20th century, most educated individuals know almost nothing about the Ancient Greeks. One exception to this general ignorance, however, is the near worldwide knowledge that the Ancient Greeks had a powerful love of competition and sporting events to test the strength and power of the individual. The Ancient Olympic Games are normally dated to 776 B.C.; but we know that Greek athletic competition had a long history before this recorded date. Homer devoted much of the Book 23 of the Iliad to an account of the games played at funerals, really sporting events that Achilles gave in honor of his dead friend, Patroclus.
I chose this page in the Odyssey because I really liked how Homer expressed the Kyklopes’ callous response when Odysseus asked him for help. The Kyklopes was completely fearless of the god’s anger toward bad hosts and I found that very interesting since he was one of the only one in the book to openly insult the gods. When I was paraphrasing this into Solzhenitsyn's writing, I substituted the gang boss Tyurin for Zeus because they are alike in the sense that they are both powerful “father” figures in the books. Zeus can decide the fate of people and all the other gods have to get his permissions to do things just like how Tyurin can help determine the work rate of the prisoners and how well their lives are. Zeus is also the “father” figure for many of the gods such as Athena since he is one of the eldest gods according to Greek mythology.
On March 26, 2016, a friend, an acquaintance, and I drove to Norfolk, Virginia, for a photoshoot. The three of us all had writing internships with the Odyssey Online, and we needed photos for our weekly articles. As a Chesapeake native, I was already quite familiar with the City of Norfolk; however, this trip showed me a depth to the city that I had never noticed before.
The epic poem, The Odyssey, is the story of what happens when Odysseus is trying to return to Ithaka after the Trojan War. Several characters faced obstacles which they have to overcome using strategies as well as intelligence. In The Odyssey, by Homer the theme wisdom is shown by Penelope when she is sewing and Odysseus with the Kyklopes.
“If a journey doesn’t have something to teach you about yourself, then what kind of journey is it?”, is a question that Kira Salak asked herself but can also apply to anyone who is embarking on a journey, whether it be mental, physical, or spiritual. It makes one take a step back realize that the actual lessons lie within the quest taken to accomplish the goal. But what are those lessons? Characters found in the ancient greek myth The Odyssey by Homer such as Odysseus and people in real life like Kira Salak, they both embark on quests to accomplish a goal, whether it is to get home or to travel down the lengthy Niger river alone. They reveal lessons about independence and personal limits during their quests. But, not anyone could survive
