Philosophy of Leadership and the role of the APN Precisely identifying what it takes to be an effective leader can be a difficult task. Which is likely the reason that almost all who have attempted to define leadership have provided somewhat different descriptions (Grossman & Valiga, 2012). Therefore in order to develop a personal leadership philosophy the review of others writing on the subject of leadership was conducted. Maxwell concluded leadership is the ability to influence others, and while we may be unaware of it we are all leaders in one way or another due to the influence we have on others (2012). While each states authorizes varying degrees of practice there are several general roles that NP’s maintain (Buppert, 2015). These roles include procuring patients medical and social histories, performing physical exams, diagnosis and treatment of medical issues, ordering and interpretation of diagnostic tests, prescription of medications and other medical treatments, providing immunizations, educating patients about health risks, preventing illness, and overall health maintenance, encouraging follow through with recommended medications, treatments, and lifestyle modifications (Buppert, 2015). Thus the personal leadership philosophy of leading by example and influencing others in positive ways corresponds well with the roles of NP’s who strive to maintain and restore the health of their patients, along with encouraging patients to live healthier lifestyles. The poem presented by Maxwell entitled My Influence surmises the personal leadership philosophy of this future NP leader. “My life shall touch a dozen lives, before this day is done. Leave countless marks of good or ill, e’er sets the evening sun. This, the wish I always wish, the prayer I always pray; Lord, may my life help others’ lives it touches by the way.” (2012, pg. 17).

There are many roles and tasks that can be performed under the LPNs scope of practice. The LPN can give medications prescribed by the doctor, give immunizations approved by the healthcare provider, preform daily wound care and vital signs, take medical histories and enter provided information into the computer documents, (Licensed Practical Nurse, 2017). The Licensed Practical Nurse can watch over the UAP, monitor intake and output, and help with patient transferring as well. The LPN has a lot responsibly and works as the eyes and ears of a doctor or a registered nurse.
Before going through this journey of self-discovery, my view of leadership was accurately described by John C. Maxwell “ Leadership is influence.” (Maxwell, para. 25, 2012). I believed, before taking this class and Northouse’s (2013) assessments, leaders were defined by the extent to which they could influence others to achieve company goals. I thought that, when discussing leadership, the leader was the most important aspect of the leader-member dyad and that it was the leader who had the greatest influence over how successful the organization was. Leaders themselves, in my view, should have been the focus of leadership studies and it should have been up to the leader to develop his/her skills in

For many years, I have been told by teachers, family, and friends that I am a good leader. Until fairly recently, I had never truly thought about what it means to be a good leader and just took it as a compliment. Leadership is an intangible concept which cannot be properly outlined in a dictionary, but one which must be formed and explained only through one’s own philosophies and experiences.
Nurse practitioners evaluate, monitor, and diagnose patients. They are also able to prescribe pharmacologic and nonpharmacologic medications. They assess a patient by performing age-appropriate medical history and physical for illnesses (APRN, CCI Institute). Nurse Practitioners are able to assist in surgeries. They recommend different medical treatments. Facilitates patient's care: discharge, admits, and transfers. John Maxwell once said, “ leaders become great not because they have power but because they have the ability to empower others”. This quote inspires me to think what leadership really means. A leader is a person who thinks about other people's privileges before him. It is a person who can be a good example to others. According to the quote, a true leader empowers others.
John Maxwell’s basic premise of leadership revolves around influence. Therefore, anyone who has influence is a leader of some kind. In addition, leadership is not about titles or positions; rather, leadership is about making a difference in the lives of others. Through this lens, Maxwell describes how anyone at any level on the organizational chart can influence others and make a difference in the lives of those they follow, their colleagues, and those they lead.
Upon review of chapters 1 and 2 of Leadership and Practice, 7th edition, by Peter G. Northouse, one can gather more information to what leadership is and the practice/s associated with this particular concept/process. On page 6, it states leadership is a process whereby an individual influences a group of individuals to achieve a common goal. It is better for one to have better leadership skills, which is different from management skills. This essay will explore how the text divulges into the many concepts of leaderships and practice, how leaders differ from followers, how leaders differ from managers, trait versus process leadership, coercion and leadership, and major leadership traits, and so on. If one is a better leader, one has a better chance of getting a job. Besides this importance of being a leader, the essay will describe how in the text by Northouse illustrates how leaders influence groups to achieve goals and there may be some characteristics of leaders that may come off as surprising. Leaders may be depressed or anxious people, but at the same time they are very encouraging and determined group that inspires others around them and acts as a role model for other individuals looking to better themselves, and their respective companies. Being a great leader of a team, a town, or a retail store, are all entirely different leaders. The word ‘leadership’ often times triggers a preconceived image of an ideal leader—typically accompanied by the aura that the effective leader should be at the top of the hierarchy, ready to produce the solutions to complex problems. However, this is not true of leadership, given that effective leadership is not achieved by position but rather through style and situational awareness. Examining leadership requires the consideration of the catalysts for different types of leaders. Popular leader development theories tend to focus on the natural servitude of the leader, his or her capability to manage, and leader behavior.
Maxwell’s (2011) book reveals the art of leadership as a 5 level process that presents apparent and outlined steps. The author’s (Maxwell, 2011) concept was initiated 5 years prior to the publishing of this book. The author believes that leadership influences, thus, leaders can improve their craft effectively if they increase their influential impact on others. Leaderships’ role in the process is to efficiently establish change and promote growth internally and externally. The five levels provided and explained helps as it supplements steps that enable effective growth in the process. Maxwell (2011) notes that “the concept is tested and proven” (Maxwell, 2011, p. 3).
For decade’s individuals, companies, and organizations have spent an unprecedented amount of money on researching, molding, modeling and working to define what a leader is and what characteristics make successful leaders. Despite all the research, there is not a quick answer or even full agreement as to what makes an individual an effective leader. The definition of a leader is “someone who can influence others and who has managerial authority.” (Robbins, Decenzo, Coulter, 2015. P.370)
Leadership has been defined by Dobbins and Pettman (1997) as the ability to motivate people to work towards achieving common goals, to make ordinary people display extraordinary performance. There are different theories of leadership with various stages at its development: traditional theories, contemporary theories and future of leadership. The major contributors to leadership theories are Handy (1993), Kouzes and Pasner(1993), Cacioppe (1997), R. Likert(1961), Blake and Mouton (1964), Fiedler (1967), and Hersey-Blanchard (1968).
