"Technology alone is not enough...It's technology married with liberal arts, married with the humanities, that yields us the results that make our hearts sing."
-Steve Jobs
I was in 10th grade the first time I picked up a copy of WIRED Magazine. In the dim light of my basement, the bright hues and sharp serif fonts of the cover were obscured by a thick layer of dust. Searching for Christmas lights, I stumbled upon a stack of my father's technology magazines from the late 1990s and early 2000s. In an instant, I was captivated by the bold cover designs and striking feature articles. Glossy photos of visionaries like Steve Jobs and Richard Branson spread out before me, and articles detailing the birth of the iPod and the dream of private space travel held my attention for hours on end. Fifteen-year-old me couldn't believe that there was a place where the cold, calculated nature of technology combined with the nuances of written expression in such a beautiful way. My journey towards enlightenment had begun.
The experience was a humbling one. I was used to being told that I was the smart kid. The "gifted" one. The quick study. WIRED changed that. I had always been interested in technology, but the discussions of different industrial design languages and computer operating systems, of aerodynamic components that were being

For a while, WIRED was my biggest source of inspiration, until it ceased to exist. That was the last issue before the magazine changed editorial staff, and the features I had known and loved became a memory. Later editions of the writing competition I had won were scrapped, and replaced with pages of colorful advertising. I was heartbroken. Even though the magazine that inspired my ambitions is gone, I will always be indebted to it. I owe my pursuits and motivations to WIRED
The evolution of technology is constantly occurring in order to be more helpful in society. Therefore, a new gadget comes out within months or a year because of how it’s constantly evolving and how clients always ask for more. Andrew Sullivan wrote an essay in 2005 and talked the once popular iPod. In his essay, “Society Is Dead, We Have Retreated into the iWorld,” Andrew Sullivan uses the rhetorical triangle, visual imagery, and one of the rhetorical appeals, logos, to achieve his purpose of how technology has impacted human interactions.
Neil Postman; cultural critic, author, and teacher extraordinaire, spent his career warning and educating about the role technology was beginning to play in society. He wrote all of his books, articles, and speeches by hand and reportedly never met a computer or typewriter that he liked. He also never published an academic journal article due to his belief that his ideas were meant to be read by all, not exclusively a handful of scholars. In today's age of technological overload, just thirty years after his most well-known book "Amusing Ourselves to Death," Neil Postman is revered as a prophet as more and more of our media consumption becomes purely for entertainment purposes.
This text is published by a media company called Mic. Their target audience is young people and they cover a wide variety of subjects such as News, Arts, and Technology (Mic /about). The author of this article is Sophie Kleeman, who, according to her profile on Mic.com, covers the “intersection of tech and culture” (Mic /profiles/152573/sophie-kleeman)
In the position of Student Tech Director at my school, I demonstrate leadership everyday. My job as the Student Tech Director is to collaborate with the Tech and Theater Directors, direct other students, and help to design the theatrical lighting and sets. Although I’ve gotten the hang of it now, when I first got the title at the end of my Sophomore Year, it was much more intimidating. The title of Student Tech Director is somewhat of a tradition in the Theater Department of my school, with the graduating student passing the title down to their predecessor. Lots of tech students compete for the title, and I had big shoes to fill.
My ultimate goal for this year’s 10th grade project was to improve my technological literacy. The initial project was to learn how to create an iOS app in Xcode using Swift 4 as the programming language. I created a simplistic “homework app” designed to notify a student about missing and upcoming assignments as well as tests and quizzes. A simulator was created for the app in Xcode and ran it successfully on my computer. Additionally, I wanted the app to include other features i.e., adding classes, having personal reminders, and notifications. Creating additional features and push notifications created errors. One of the problems was not being able to correctly set up push notifications; when I created a code to allow the user to select the time they wanted to receive their notifications, the notification would not
We haven't talked in a while so I thought I send you a quick e-mail. My life has been school, running, sleep, and music! School is going well like all my teachers (for the most part)! I haven't raced yet in cross country because I got sick a few week ago... I am just not getting over it, and I was supposed to have a meet on Saturday, but it was canceled due to horrible course conditions. I have been spending a lot of time producing music... Over this last summer, I got very serious about it. Realistically, I don't think it will be a career field for me, but you never know, and I really enjoy it. I've thought myself a lot, but I think I will be meeting with some actual audio engineers to learn even more. Right now music production
I have come across many situation where I have had to compromise to resolve my issues. I am a cadet major in the United High School AFJROTC and was placed in a leadership position as the chief of staff. That means I help lead about 200 cadets toward common goal that is to teach them life skill that will produce better citizens. I work alongside the Group Commander and Deputy who also assist in running the corps. Our instructor often gives us many tasks to better our communication and leadership skills. Many of these tasks require us to work together as a team, but of course working together as a team doesn’t always come easy. One of the biggest challenges that I have come across so far was preparing for awards night. Awards night is a graduation for all the cadets where they receive ribbons to account for all their accomplishments
The authors, Lev Grossman and Matt Vella, Time Magazine writers, inform and persuade their opinions and concerns about the change in technology and how this change may lead to being too much a part of our life, “too intimate” (Grossman, Vella). They begin with a description of how they perceive how Apple runs its company and how they work to make products. Apple uses old or different ideas and uses them to create one of their aesthetically pleasing devices. The authors say that “Apple dissects it and studies the various causes of death. Then it builds something so completely thought through, so seductively designed, so snugly embedded in webs of content and services and communications, that it not only lives again, it thrives….” Lev and
As an Agriculture Science major with minors in Animal Science and Agronomy, I have learned that my future could to a variety of career paths. From education to applied research Agriculture is an industry that is need of students with a passion and foundation to feed the world. That also means that we need a good solid foundation of core concepts that make us sustainable and effective in our chosen careers. Technical writing I have found has been overlooked and not applied in the way that it fully could be to make students better rounded and viable in a competitive job market. I would like to apply the lessons that I have learned over the last three months and apply these skills. We will be looking at three technical documents that are commonly used in the Agriculture science industry and those being, Pamphlets or programs, emails, and Informative documents that help educate producers. These documents are the most widely used and will be most commonly seen and dealt with by Agricultural Professionals.
Hello Andrew! Thank you for your service, Marine! What influenced you to choose Infantryman as your MOS? It’s great that you’re taking steps to improve your skills to be an asset in your business. What type of business do you have?
Oh man.. diet this.. diet that!! what will they think of next!.. what an industry.. I am not saying that it won't work.. but i know that if I do a set program, i will end up getting off it in the end and gaining my weight back.. I started cooking for myself.. I found it was a great way of cutting the calories!..but i didn't know how to cook... then my friend bought me this dirty little beginners cookbook that was so dang funny that I just couldnt put it down... I can't tell you the name of the book cause it's politically incorrect.. but if you google "whipped and beaten Culinary works" you'll find it.. but if you get offended easily and can't take a joke..skip
While Slashdot provides a means for hardcore nerds to socialize, other blogs like Gizmodo and Engadget bring together a larger a broader nerd audience. The sites are both members of the top 5 most visited blogs worldwide, beating sites like PerezHilton and Gawker, by reporting on the cutting edge of consumer electronics. Consumer electronics (cell phones, laptops, televisions, etc.) are a growing part of life and that is what these sites attempt to capitalize on; it is no longer just grandma that doesn’t understand the differences between the newest flat-panel TVs. Unlike Slashdot, the articles found on these sites tell more of a back story and link to previous and relevant articles. It is specifically the emergence of the internet that has enabled these sites to make the most of the vested interest almost everyone has in technology. Engadget is at the forefront of unifying the “nerd” masses. Earlier this year the blog launched The Engadget Show, a monthly talk show which is recorded live in New York City. The show has packed the
By the time my sophomore year of high school came to an end, my digital creations reached over 30 million people. Interestingly, the marvelous opportunity to connect with the world began with one of the most defective and frustrating laptops ever created. But despite the poor quality of my laptop, it helped me develop a profitable business, which has in turn promoted my personal growth, encouraged me to sieze valuable opportunities, allowed me to develop skills that will serve me well in college, and advanced my ability to effectively communicate.
I have been trained to become a chemist since the first year of my high school. This is a challenging career, requiring analytical thinking, attention to details, and adaptability. It is also a well-paying and promising career. However, chemistry is not what I have always dreamt of doing the rest of my life. As someone who is concerned about the development of sub-Saharan Africa, I came to a conclusion that what this region needs is not only scientists but also people who know and understand leadership and international affairs. In this paper, I compare my strengths and abilities to the qualities that one should have in order to excel as a chemist and a diplomat.
During the second half of the semester, we have been looking at games, novels, and critical scholarship that have explored the relationship between digital technologies and print and media technologies at the borders of video games and novels. One of the takeaways from this it that objects themselves matter at the level of representation, code, design, and system, and they transform, affect, shape, and or recede from our attempts to apprehend them. We aren’t meant to live forever, so what’s next? There are many different theories and beliefs that are out there, but with technology growing rapidly it seems like the impossible might come. No matter how old you are, one has definitely read a book or watched a movie that have
