Personal Narrative: A Change For Eternity

Growing up with a father in the military, you move around a lot more than you would like to. I was born just east of St. Louis in a city called Shiloh in Illinois. When I was two years old my dad got the assignment to move to Hawaii. We spent seven great years in Hawaii, we had one of the greatest churches I have ever been to name New Hope. New Hope was a lot like Olivet's atmosphere, the people were always friendly and there always something to keep someone busy. I used to dance at church, I did hip-hop and interpretive dance, but you could never tell that from the way I look now.

I moved to the United States in 2003 to live with my mother who then resided in the country for five years. The thought of escaping the war in Monrovia was thrilling but I soon realized that my country’s war was not my only battle. After my arrival into America, I was faced with oncoming waves of challenges. The war had prevented me from attending school for two consecutive years. The knowledge I had was incomparable to that of my peers. My inability to speak English, along with the overwhelming burden of my native tongue made learning in a new American school difficult. I was a foreigner left to present my capabilities clearly through black lenses with no words spoken depicting that I came from a third-world country. I accepted these faults

When my family and I decided to move to the United States, it was with the hope to obtain a better life and a better education for my brother and me. But when we arrived, our expectations turned out to be different than what we found here. Above all, to achieve a good education is not that simple because I have to face many barriers that make my education difficult, including adapting myself to the American culture, having parents that can 't help me with school work because they do not know English, and the most difficult part, dealing with a the poor background. To begin with, I was born in a small country called Ecuador. Yes, Ecuador, not equator. I was born and raised in a Latino household where much of the world was hidden from me. That was until the age of 8 when my mom decided that it was the best to take me with her to an unknown, at that time, land. It was about a year later that I found out I was in the United States. Crazy, right? What can I say, I was a very naive child.

Stepping off the plane in June 2005, I knew I was no longer in Colombia and I had not yet realized my life would change. The first noticeable difference was school; I was motivated to learn, advance, and achieve greatness. I was told I could accomplish anything I dreamed; however, I knew I did not have the resources to procure my dreams. We started from zero, scratch. I have been in the Marine Corps for roughly three and a half years and throughout that time I have done many things. Most of the things that I have done were with Combat Logistics Battalion 26. For three years, I worked with that unit through work ups and a deployment and I have seen and done many unique things.
