"Hmm, I think I'll wake up tomorrow and run 10 miles!", said no non Cross Country runner ever. This is a prime example of why a lot of people don't do it. It is a very rigorous sport that requires a very special type of person to participate in. What kind of people does Cross Country attract? If you asked me, I would say that Cross Country is the toughest, geekiest sport there is. Essentially, Cross Country is a chaotic sport for chaotic people. Although the reputation of Cross Country might be viewed as just a bunch of scrawny, skinny, awkward kids unable to handle the difficulty of “real” sports like football or sewing, I say with confidence that there is not any other physical activity out there that is as rewarding and painful as Cross Country! …show more content…

It’s a sport for the strange kids of society and loners who don’t mind being trapped inside their own heads. It is for those people that can endure the pains of racing. It is also for those that can withstand the mental stress of thinking, “Why am I doing this?”. During races, there are no dancers with pompoms, no tailgating fans at the finish line, no way of using your semi-athletic abilities to land a hot homecoming date. It is a sport for those that search for unrecognized, unappreciated accomplishments. At the end of the day, Cross Country runners don't need fancy equipment, a huge fan base, or a scoreboard to feel good about what they have done. They just reflect on what they have done and accomplished and know that they their hard work will pay
