Over the summer before my freshmen year of college after high school graduation, I took two classes at my local community college, one of which was Math 10, or Elementary Statistics and Probability. This was my first college-level statistics class and math had always been my favorite subject in school, so I was excited to dive in. Little did I know then that this class would be the stepping stone to my intended major. On the first day of Math 10, I arrived early and sat in the front row. A short while after I walked in, other students grudgingly walked to their seats and the teacher finally walked in. She gave us all a big smile, and began the lecture. Although she made it seem like the class would be hard since the course would be covered
According to Clark, & Cresswell, (2014) quantitative research studies emphasize numeric data and statistical analysis to explain variables. In the article, “Effect of elementary grade retention on subsequent school achievement and ability” by Westbury, (1994) the purpose of the research is to examine and compare the achievement and ability of retained elementary students to continually promoted elementary school students. This research is supported by several studies that help in identify how retaining students has its effects; the literatures included grade repetition does not correct the original learning problems and it can affect student’s emotion and self-esteem. According to Chohan & Qadir (2013) grade retention
I had just won first place in the oldest, most competitive sewing contest in the country! Something most people could only dream of had suddenly become my reality. So why wasn’t I happy? Why did I feel like I was being whisked off to prepare for the Hunger Games, groomed and fussed over by people who didn’t care about me?
My schooling began in Cali, Colombia. At the age of two, my mother matriculated me at local nursery because she worked in the daytime. When I was four, my mother enrolled me in a non-religious private pre-school. The school was known for having a strong program in math and literacy. In my country, education is mandatory until middle school. My homeland uses an alphabet and similar to English it goes from left to right. In pre-school, I remember singing the national anthem every morning. I would stand up alongside of many other students and with our hand across our chest we would sing the entire national anthem. I also remember doing a lot of hands-on activities like counting the elements of each set and making a line to the corresponding number
Prior to this course I have used statistics in my professional life. During my previous employment at the University of Tennessee, College of Veterinary Medicine I worked in the student admissions which made my primary job focus the student application process. This process required me to compile statistical information on our applicant pool for faculty and administrative staff to determine who would be accepted. This statistical data included both categorical data, such as current grade level in undergraduate studies, gender, and ethnicity, as well as numerical data such as age, GPAs, average number of courses taken in a semester, credit hours completed, and test scores (Mirabella, 2011). After the admissions process was completed, these different
The targeted group of students for this class would students who have declared a major in statistics or political science; however, any Honors College student would be encouraged to take this class. This would be a good math class for students who have declared a major in political science to take, as this math class would focus on applying statistical skills to topics that are relevant to their major. Statistics majors who would like to work for government agencies or organizations, such as Gallup, would gain experience calculating statistics that are similar to the statistics they would be calculating once they graduate and secure a job with one of these organizations. The students who take this class would also have the opportunity to conduct their own statistical research project. This project would act as a final exam and would allow the students to apply
A warm bead of sweat rolled down my brow in such a slow manner I thought that I had received a cut on my head and I was bleeding from whacking my head on the door panel when I exited out of the cruiser. I wiped it away as I leaned back against the hood of the car, sweating up a storm in the white polo that was supposed to be a uniform.
It sounds like using the stratified random sampling would be a good choice for using a particular group of people. In stratified random sampling the individuals conducting the research know some things about the community that is providing date such as age, gender, ethnicity, and medical diagnosis. This is also a good option when there is a time restraint to obtain the information that is being gathered. The survey would also have to be ensured it is written in a way that the average person can clearly understand the question to get a proper answer.
AP Statistics is a great start to further your education in a math-related field. As this class will look impressive on your transcript and there is a possibility of college credit if you score well enough on the AP exam with accords to your college choice standards. The course will provide an in-depth overview of exploring data, sampling and experimentation, anticipating patterns, and statistical inference. You will study statistics and apply it to intricate problems.
My new assignment moved me to be with the fifth graders in Ms. Bolds’ room. I had heard of each of these students but hadn’t met them. It took some adjusting, and more adjusting, but I got to know each of these new fifth graders. We also invited some “pull out” students to our room every day for some extra help with Math and Writing. This made our room crazy at times. One of the things I love about this job is that I never have the same day twice.
Before I started using Smarthinking, turnitin, and the remaining tools from Capella, I was quite nervous on how my paper will be graded. Then, I became more confident in my writing styles due to the feedback that I received from Smarthinking, turnitin, and most importantly, from Dr. J. The revisions to Unit 4 and Unit 7 assignments have already been implemented in order to improve my final paper for Unit 10. For instance, some of the suggestions that I had to revise were sentence structure, word choice, and grammar & mechanics. I took my time to make revisions about the suggested comments so that my assignments will have clarity and with precision. The feedbacks that I received from Units 4 and 7 have been tremendously very beneficial. As
Statistics involves framing questions in a context, then collecting and analyzing data for interpretation. Probability is about chance and fairness with assigned values. Many mathematics instructors teach this discipline in a procedural manner, causing students to miss its essence.
Having always excelled in math and math related content in class, this often left me feeling board and unchallenged, however after being reintroduced to a challenge and having to work for something, my love for math was reignited. Now there was someone who was going to ensure I would learn, sitting in class just waiting for the assignment
As my transcripts reveal, I have taken substantial courses in both statistics and mathematics. Three years' painstaking study equipped me with a solid mathematical foundation and a deeper understanding of Statistics. I vividly recall the excitement of exchanging ideas with my peers and the achievement of solving questions independently. Moreover, sharing my passion, I helped some of my classmates for the preparation of final exams. I taught them the methods of regression analysis, the connection between stochastic processes and time series, and wide application of mathematical statistics, etc. Through teaching them, my devotion to Statistics became even deeper. In the final evaluation, I received scores above 90 in those statistical lessons. More importantly, my understanding was largely consolidated and
Seventh grade started off well for me, as most school years did. There was the usual getting used to schedules, teachers, and so on, which always took effect, and then adjusting to who you’re in class with. Well, this and I began my third year of scouting, along with a few of my friends. This allowed us to go camping with each other often, and I enjoyed it very much. All of this held true until around December, so about ⅓ of the way through the school year. This was when my grandpa was sent into the hospital again from a heart problem that he had. When I say “again” I don’t mean that anything had happened too recently, but he did he stay there the previous January before seventh grade. At first, no one in my family worried, but quickly were doubting our initial thoughts. The reason he had relapsed from his previous recovery of the heart condition is because he had taken pills that doctors had told him he would have to take for the rest of his life. This was problematic to him because he had never taken pills for a prolonged period of time before, so after roughly ten months he stopped taking them. He thought he could, even though it went against the doctor's orders, just
As a young child, I was timid towards participating in class activities, and I would not seek help if I was struggling because I was terrified of judgement from both my teacher and my peers. I was so insecure about myself, that I became obsessed with the idea that I was obligated to complete any task anyone gave me because I was a burden on them and their life. I would go out of my way to help someone on their homework to my own grade’s deficit, or I would knowingly place myself into the middle of social drama I was not involved in simply because I could not say no. This eventually resulted in me becoming both emotionally and physically exasperated. I began to isolate myself from both friends and family. This way, I could not be held accountable for
