More Than Just a Label I quickly swallowed my homemade authentic Indian food leftovers and gulped down my chocolate milk. Looking down at my watch that read 11:28am, I knew that I only had two minutes until my most favorite part of the day: recess. This particular day in 5th grade, I had run a lap around the playground before getting the rest of recess to myself. As I started walking for my warmup, another student ran up and said, “My parents said that your people caused 9/11.” Completely caught off guard, I held back the tears in my eyes and tried to shake off his comment. I had never encountered something like this. As someone who had never experienced such deep racism, I was very taken aback by my insulting encounter at the playground.
Of course the norm for me is that of any citizen living in zone three.
Although I have not thought about how I would stage a play I will give myself a chance to thinking thoroughly about how I would want an audience to receive a piece of work written by the four playwrights we have read this semester. Drawing on Wilson’s famous speech, I have an idea about what I would want. The Ground on Which I Stand is one that acknowledges the amazing playwrights we were able to read this semester. I appreciate what they have given to the world through the stage and in print. There have been plays that I resonated with me and some that were harder to grasp. Many of these playwrights talk about connections and family which is a way that I have connected with the characters. I wouldn't use many of the playwrights as influences
My is name Kyra Alexandra Avila Kepfer. Kyra is my mom’s name and Alexandra comes from my dad’s middle name “Alexander”. My Dad’s last name, Avila, is from Spain and Guatemala. My mom 's last name, Kepfer, is German. My mom was originally going to call me Katherine Andrea. My names meaning is light, throne, and sun. Since my mom’s name is also Kyra my family calls me Kyrita which is my name in spanish. At times my mom will call me “Alex” which is short for Alexandra. My mom has always called me that and my family has called me Kyrita for as long as I can remember. Many strangers pronounce my name Kira which kinda gets annoying after a while but it 's understandable. To my family my name means a fun, lovable, and active 15 year old girl who loves to spend time with family and friends. I like my name because its original and not common. The fact that my name means the sun is interesting because it 's so unique and bright, which is how I want my future to be. If i had the chance to change my name i wouldn 't because i 'm used to it and i feel like it defines me as a person. I’m grateful that my mom named me Kyra and i 'll always embrace it.
My initial perceptions about the students of St. Angela were very stereotypical. Honestly, I expected those students to come from single parent backgrounds and come from a low income household. I expected to deal with students who live life in a survival type of manner. What I mean by survival type of manner is for one to be on defense seeing the type of the children are from the Austin area. Walking in to St. Angela I expected to deal with kids that didn’t listen and know respect for authority. I expected this due to my upbringing in the same neighborhood.
It was just like every other day. The sun was shining, the birds were chirping playing their songs in harmony. I was at the station drinking my coffee.
“Who thought the baptism water would be as cold as an ice bath?” Much like anyone growing up in Las Vegas, or otherwise known as “Sin City,” we have always been surrounded by people from The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. Those people are commonly known as “Mormons.” Boy, let me tell you, there are Mormons everywhere in Vegas! There was always something about them that made me interested. There was a light as bright as the sun that always shined from them. They always had a smile on their face, from ear to ear and once you start talking to them I found that they are the nicest people. I then got to know and started hanging out with the Mormons. I then became interested with the religion aspect.
I hereby tender my request for my listener account to be deleted, immutably. Not deactivated, not put on hold, not suspended. I am well aware of my options, and trust me when I say that it is only after careful consideration and painstaking deliberation, that I arrive at this conclusion. Long, dreary nights spent agonising over which one is the right one ; which is the best possible outcome, under these set of circumstances? At this juncture in my life, what do I have to do, what do I need to do, what should I do? So many options, so many variables, so much room for error … a careless oversight, a lapse in judgement, a fatal miscalculation … that is all it would take to spell disaster. I would never forgive myself.
Pulling into the parking lot was a lot more nerve racking than I thought. I could feel my body shaking from head to toe; trying to remind myself to take deep breaths. This was the first time I wasn’t playing in the game, and I had anxiety just like every spectator had for my team. Everyone, including me, was rooting for us to win, and I didn’t want to disappoint. It had to be 90 degrees that day, because I could feel the sweat dripping down my face as if I had just run a marathon. My nerves didn’t help either, because it just made me sweat even more. When I grabbed the handle to open the door, my hand almost slid off because they were so sweaty. My friend’s dad grabbed it, and opened it for me. After I walked in I was handed a yellow and black brochure that said “Seton Academy” in big bold black letters. I found my name listed inside next to all the 8th graders on my team. It was St. Agnes vs. Marsh, and it was going to be an exhilarating game. We had worked hard all season to stay undefeated, which led us to the opportunity to play in the championship that day. I walked into the gym which was about 10 degrees hotter than outside, because of the extra bodies stacked closely together, and that’s when it started.
The song starts with hamilton along in his room, in a city away from his family. You can obviously that he is stressed and tired, and a little bit homesick. When out of nowhere this bombshell Mariah Reynolds knocks on his door and pleads for help. She greets Hamilton with:
As I felt the hot air hug me, she looked at me with a panicky face worried i was gonna tell her secret. They are brother and sister you see it now in how their eyes are red and and there nose’s has a slight crook in it in the same spot. How did i not know this before? How could i not put it together?
It was an early afternoon in September and I was going through my usual study plan for the SAT. My mom walks into my room with a sheet of paper.
The way we were raised, or in the community we lived in is the reason why we are the person we are today. As I, Crystal, grew up in a household of two parents, and two older sisters. My childhood consisted of support, love, but mostly being spoiled by my entire family. The house I grew up in was in a neighborhood so friendly, loving neighbors, a place you would want to grow up in. Not a day went by that my sisters and I, and the other kids weren't outside playing, riding bikes everywhere, or simply walking to the elementary park a block away. With that said, I grew up well in a loving community, but with all that going on we had problems within our family. I was about 13 when I found out my parents were fighting and planning on divorce. Before the conflict, my parents decided on building a house outside
“To the world, you may be one person, but to one person you may be the world.” Throughout my life, I have been blessed with two individuals who were the world to me and have inspired me to be a person whose daily mission is to make a child’s day better. Both of these inspiring women loved children, and when I was a child, they made me feel like I was important each and every day. They made my heart feel whole and my face smile endlessly.
Trying new things have always intrigued me. From new foods, to exploring unfamiliar places, or to a new taste in music I’m always up for a new adventure. This is why I asked, “Why not?” when my friend requested that I listen to a new band called Why Don’t We.
