We were all seemingly unstoppable, as if any incredible force couldn’t possibly pound us straight into the dirt, just like frail, puny ants, no matter how hard it tried. There were sixteen of us, each with our own viewpoints on the true ’concept’ of a gang. To me, a gang is just a group of people. With a different gang comes a different goal. To others, a gang is a just gathering of kick-ass individuals, who will participate in rumbles and kill without batting an eyelash. Despite being in a gang, I’m not like that at all. Sure, I do join in on the occasional fight or two, but death is a serious matter to me. I don’t want to die, so I sure as hell know that others don’t want to die, either. Some talk about not being afraid of Death himself,
The sad reality is that society does not take a minute to step out of their shoes and try to understand why someone becomes a gang member. Throughout Barking to the Choir, two common themes that arise is the lack of love, and growing up with a rough childhood. For many, survival becomes the priority, especially if they have siblings to look out for. Thus, gang life is not an ideal choice but rather a lucrative option. Through Rational Choice Theory, it is easy to place blame on the gang member, but the reality is that for a plethora of gang members there was no other
Gangs originated naturally during the adolescent years of a child. They started from small play groups that eventually found themselves in conflict with other small groups of youth. Due to the conflict between the two small groups of youth it became a part of a child’s mind set to come together as a gang and protect their rights and satisfy the needs that their environment and families couldn’t provide. There are about 24,500 gangs in the U.S and out of those gangs 40% of them are juveniles (Hess, Orthmann, Wright, 2013). There are numerous reason why a child would join a gang, and the
Who is willing to die just to be part of gang? In the book Always Running by Luis J. Rodriguez, the author tells a true about his past and how he was involved in gangs and a lot of violence during the time. Once Luis joined the gang, the leader forced him to commit terrible crimes that harmed not just other people, but himself. I believe that gangs and violence should be discontinued because they cause a rift in communities. For example, Luis loses a lot of his friends due to the brutality that he played part in. Eventually, Luis had the chance to escape the affiliation because he was shot by their rival gang known as The Thamos. Surprisingly, Luis survived the attack and he went forth with changing his life by becoming a journalist and getting
On 10/02/2017 at 0017 hours, units were dispatched to 627 Central Ave for a report of a Domestic involving a knife. I responded at emergency speed, priority one. Upon my arrival, I located the accused female in the bathroom.
There had been a few events throughout my lifetime when I was little and had me feeling mentally most of the time since I was young. One of those that occurred when I was living in Stockton, Gang members would come up to me and try to convince me to join their gang and stuff I didn't really know that much of gang activity back then I mean i seen some gang getting in fights or doing drive by shooting down my street I didn't really like the violence. One time I got moved to this one School I didn't really like it to be honest I kept it real with some people that was cool with me all the rest I didn't like, there was a group of kids that was in a gang that me and my boys didn't like one time I went to the bathroom and all of them came in together and jumped me… That's when I started hanging out with my boys that gang bang because I knew they were going to be the only ones to get my back for me plus they were like family to me and one time we found them hanging out so me and my boys were ready to fight them so we did, It felt good getting them back for jumping me till my boys started coming up and started bring out weapons that's when I was like thinking I should stop hanging out with them because I can see myself later on going to jail for weapons charges, Drug possession, assault and battery.
Edward James Olmos did a great job at bringing attention to the dangers of gangs and prison and life. As I was watching the film I felt extremely empathetic towards the individuals that were apart the gangs especially, since most of them joined because they felt like the other gang members were their second or only family. Olmos describes friendships as something disposable an easily broken. Although there seemed to be a strong bond in the relationships among the gang members, they were almost always destroyed by the need to maintain the other gang member’s masculinity and power. The extremes that they went through to preserve their identity as the tough guys came at deadly costs. The members had to prove their masculinity by killing their friends and in the case of
This simple quote shows that gang members would get in trouble late at night and get involved with risky activities. “We die soon.” Here, the author is suggesting that gang life will often lead to suffering, or even death. This displays how precarious things can
It was my first paper of my senior year, and I was writing it for a teacher that was very intimidating. Other students had told me that if you didn’t sit right, talk right, and have perfect grammar that Mrs. King, the English teacher, would tear me apart and fail me. Since I was so intimidated by her I wanted to write a paper that would blow her away. I wanted to get on her good side so she wouldn’t tear me apart and fail me like I thought she would. The topic of the paper she assigned was, “What three school rules do you want to change and why?” This bland topic made it very difficult to write a slam dunk, out of the park paper; never the less I had to try.
I attend John Jay College of Criminal Justice not only to further my education, but also to take care of my family. My mother passed away when I was only six years old; however, I have a brother, two sisters, a grandmother who knows what struggle is, and a father who cannot find the words to define his love for my mother. At no point she was hesitant about being a mother to her four young grandkids. I always knew she was an important part of my childhood, but I had never truly understood how she influenced me until a much older age.
Majority of students in their senior year in high school decide who they will become later in the future and pursue the road of success, as for I made an interest in criminal justice. The beginning of my freshman year in high school I knew who I was and who I wanted to be but not for myself but for my family. To image myself in the customs border protection agent uniform and present to my family the success I have made is the goal I would love to achieve. For the strong interest I have for criminal justice I joined everything my family could’ve afford to enroll me into and the most recent one I enjoyed my high school years was the United High School Criminal Justice Club (UET). A team I became a member of was the building search team, where
As an illustration, I was a regular guy walking around the sidewalk of Staten Island.
These days, many people join forces against bullying. Now, many programs offer to prevent bullying and help stop it. Furthermore, policemen prevent this awful abuse throughout schools by going to each one of them and presenting what it is and how to stop it. They also bring comfort and security to those who go through it. Many people have shared their experiences and here is mine.
Gangs as I’ve stated previously were created to combat oppressive higher powers, in modern society while the methods have changed the reasoning has not. Repeatedly placed in systems geared toward reformation as a result of continuous deviant behavior, once inside prisoners have found a new purpose while locked away. No longer are they paying attention to reformation methods they now are able to congregate with those of a similar mindset, and form new effective methods to combat the evolving higher powers. Turning the system true purpose into a self or group serving opportunity, and the power which was once oppressive becomes empowering.
My hair was coated in pink hair coloring and my cheeks were streaked in the same shade. If it wasn’t for the crowd of all the other girls looking the exact same way I could have passed myself off as some little girl getting ready for her favorite sports team’s game. Instead I was surrounded by runners not famous athletes but elementry school girls all ready to run a five Kilometer run that hot and humid day. The line of runners and their guardians were talking back in forth groaning and moaning about the long wait for the start we all waited for the gun to go off and for the run to begin “Crack” the gun went and the first runners took off those in the back were stuck at a turtle's pace trying to get away from the clusters of people around them.
I'm not really supposed to walk alone but I couldn't wait for my brothers Sodapop or Darry to get home from work. They talk about getting jumped by the Socs who are west side rich kids pretty much. We're greasers, lower than middle class, and crazier too. But oh well, I like walking. But then I saw a red car. I was almost home so maybe if I walk a little faster, it'll help. I've never been jumped before I hope this isn't it. Oh no...they got me. They are threatening to cut my hair off. They are holding a blade against my throat. Suddenly all the Socs leave and I hear Darry asking if I'm alright. Apparently I got a little cut up and Darry made me put a band-aid on it. The whole gang was worried about me. They were asking about what they did and saying it won't happen again. Let me tell you about my family and my gang. So my dad and mom died and now all I have is Darry and Sodapop who are my brothers. Darry is pretty uptight and doesn't like me. Sodapop is the best! He's caring and understanding. I could tell him anythin. Now my gang...lets start with Two-Bit Mathews. He's the
