One skill I possess is the ability to snowboard., I have a lot more confidence in my ability to glide down a mountain now because of past failures and fears that I have had to overcome. One example of a fear I have had to overcome is the fear of catching an edge on my board. This fear of an unknown flip caused me to become a really cautious snowboarder. It took me until this year to really start becoming more of an adventurous snowboarder. This included me starting to actually start going for jumps and tricks in the terrain park, which came with a lot of injuries. I also Another thing I started doing differently was changeding up how I went down the mountain. Before I would find myself going slowly making my way to the bottom making sure I
Snowboarding is one of the most enjoyed international pastimes. It presents you with this feeling of freedom and raw power as the cold air hits your face while you carve down the almost vertical mountain face dropping over steep clips and carving trough trees. These are just a few reasons why so many people internationally flock to the mountains to partake in this sport. Snowboarding provides people an escape from there comfort zone by pushing them to take on risks they would never have thought off before.
Hunter S. Thompson once said, “Anything that gets your blood racing is probably worth doing.” Throughout life you are probably going to change hobbies and try new things, but your passion is an activity that you can enjoy doing for the rest of your life. The thing that gets my blood racing is snowboarding. It has helped me face my fears as a shy and unconfident girl, and bring joy and excitement to my life. I believe that I will always be able to turn to snowboarding during anytime throughout my life.
When I was 15, that was my 3rd year of snowboarding, my ramp freestyle element went wrong. Just this one jump became the biggest challenge in my life.
Throughout time, the progression and evolution of snowboarding has increased greatly. It has gone from non existence in the late 1970’s, to one of the most watched action sports in a matter of thirty-five years. The upward takeoff and popularity of snowboarding relies on two people, Jake Burton and Shaun White. Jake Burton back in 1977 had the vision for what snowboarding would be, but Shaun White had what it took to manifest that vision. Evidence has shown that time brings change in sports, history has repeated itself with snowboarding, this history reflects the time & changes that has occurred in America.
When I was twelve years old my best friend’s family decided to try snowboarding and skiing for the first time, that’s when I learned my lesson. My best friend at the time was 14, he lived right down the road from my house and his family was my second family for a long time. His name was John, he invited me on the trip as well. We went to my house to ask my parents about the trip five day snowboarding trip. I asked them separately and got two different answers. My dad was all for it, he even offered to pay for everything. My mom on the other hand was worried because it was all the way in Pennsylvania and it was five days away from me . The fact that I had never been on a snowboard or skis in my life didn’t help my argument either. So as the day approached I still hadn't received a direct answer from my mom. So Tim, my friend’s dad went to my house and reassured her that I was in good hands and all that good stuff. When he arrived back at his house he said through my friend’s door “ Get packed we are leaving in two days” and the arrangements were made. On the day of the trip, my dad gave Tim the money for my equipment and such. He also turned to me and handed me my very first 100 dollar bill for whatever I wanted or needed on the trip. My mom handed me a prepaid cell phone and she told me to call her twice a day. I went
Cross country is a sport that can change the way people see themselves. I can only say this statement because I have been affected by this myself. During this satisfying sport I would constantly find myself lost in the moment. Not realizing how much this sport has meant to myself. Now that I have seen just about everything this sport has to offer I can relive some of the valuable life lessons that cross country has taught me.
People called me crazy or bizarre, but I called myself determined. Crazy and bizarre refers being passionately excited and out of the ordinary, while determined refers to being relentless. Together these words perfectly described the actions I took to play ice hockey my freshman and sophomore year of highschool.
It was a chilly Sunday afternoon with blue skies and all the makings for a good day of early season skiing on that fateful November afternoon. The day was winding down, the Broncos had just kicked off, and my friends and I had just leapt off the chairlift to embark on our last run of the day. All was well on the way down, a blur of orange jerseys rushing by as I sped down the mountain making the most of the last run of my day. Upon our final few turns of the afternoon, I found myself in a predicament that would later shape me into the person I am today.
A couple years ago I was in Nebraska at my family owned restaurant. Its name is Hokes cafe ,of course we don't own it anymore. It was an old styled restaurant with a lot of antiques. It had red booths to sit on and it also had a bar section sort of thing. There were about 5-6 rooms in all including the kitchen. Most of the antiques were on the wall and some were on display but they were all cool. At the time I went by my first name Natalie Piper, I was smaller than I am now and I also LOVE to roller skate, I still do.
Saying that I was on the snowboarding and had never snowboarded before could be called a “setback”, but that may be an understatement. According to those on the team, it was a “major issue that cannot be resolved”, but for all intents and purposes, I’ll refer to it as a setback.
Let’s go back to a cold winter day at Shawnee Peak in Bridgeton, Maine. I was discussing my dilemma of what to do for the upcoming sports season with my ski coach. I have been playing softball for the past 12 years, but this year something felt different…I wasn’t interested. The past season was quite rough, getting to the point where I was seriously thinking about quitting the team. I knew I didn’t want to go back to that, but I needed something else to occupy my time. While talking to my ski coach he mentioned playing lacrosse because it was the first year being offered at my school. I quickly responded with “but I don’t want to have to run!”. He assured me that if I was the goalie there would be minimal running. My coach also added that it
If you prefer outdoor workouts, winter can be a difficult time of the year. By the time you get home from work, it's dark outside and you must resign yourself to running or walking on slushy streets. However, there is an alternative way to get a better workout away from roads and traffic. If you have nearby parks, public lands, or trail systems that you normally hike in the warmer months, you can also enjoy them in the winter with a pair of snowshoes and a headlamp. If you live in an urban area, there's a good chance that it has a number of small cross-country ski centers open at night that also allow snowshoeing.
My friends and I skate so we get around town pretty fast.We usually don’t get in trouble, but if we do we handle it. We usually go to schools like Kingston or Ranchero cause that’s around our area, but when we have fun is when we skate around our high school which is Sultana cause we have a bunch of stores around us so if we want a drink we buy some water or an iced tea from the store and if we want to grub we go to Del taco or Jack in the box. This story is different, this story has about five kids in it including me. It was EJ, Vincent, Daniel, Julian, and I.
During ski season, I spend an average of 22 hours a week with my teams. The sport of ski racing has taken up a huge part of my life, and thus has affected my life in innumerable ways. I have been skiing since I was four years old, but started racing in 7th grade. My freshman year, I quickly realized that hard work was necessary to get what I wanted. I had to choose between skiing on both teams, my grades, and other activities if I was going to pursue them with the dedication with which I wanted. It really wasn’t a choice to me. I chose a hard course load and skiing over a number of other activities that I could have pursued. Staying involved while maintaining my 3.78 GPA has taught me a lot about time management and leadership, and has
Snowboarding is an activity where an individual descends down a snow covered hill standing on a snowboard which is attached to the individual’s feet. Snowboarding has become a big sport around the world. It is an Olympic and Paralympic sport. Snowboarding was developed in the United states based on the recreational activities skateboarding, surfing, and sledding. You can slide off of snow filled jumps and do flips and you can also slide down metal pipes to do twists. It can become a very intriguing sport to watch and to become an expert at. The inventors of the snowboard narrowed it down to a small board that is about three to four feet in length and attaches to special boots you wear on your feet. I interviewed Cole Dimeglio on the sport of snowboarding, he taught me how he has been enculturated into this sport growing up.
