Personal Narrative: My First Year At Edinboro University

During my time at Union County College I have been faced with a lot of difficulties. I’ve struggled along the way but one thing I do believe is that I have the power to do better. My GPA has been affected by my personal mistakes. In my past semesters I have let my job take over my life rather than let school be most important. I have also let my personal family problems affect my work ethic. But through my fall 2014, it was most difficult because of March 2014 I lost my father through an unexpected heart attack. My first semester here at Kent State is coming to a close. It has been such a journey from the moment I stepped on campus all the way to now. Time has gone by so quickly. From new student orientation, practicals, midterms, thanksgiving break, and now finals. Now pausing for a moment, to appreciate everything that has happened this semester. It is honestly hard to put into words. The combination of class I took, the experiences I went through, the people I got to meet, and this whole new environment. College is not what I expected. Also, when I started the college, I had to experience health issues which really affected my education. It was the difficult moment for me to decide whether to stay in the college to continue my education or drop out of the college. I knew it is going to be difficult for me to continue my education because I could participate in my classes like my other classmates, and my family and friends suggested me to wait until I get better, but I decided to continue my education. Even though I had to experience failure in my first semester of the college, it was still a great experience for me to explore new opportunities and get a higher education.

Wilmington started out as home, then became just a vacation. After years of moving and resisting the pull to move back, I finally made the best and brightest decision I think I have ever made. I am moving home, and in the process, I thought there would be no better place to further my education than The University of North Carolina at Wilmington. I have recently taken a year off in between high school and pursuing my college education, and frankly, I think it has been one of the most humbling experiences of my life. If I could go back in time and relive a particularly difficult moment in my life, I will work part-time in the weekend in high school. I want to save my money. I want to travel other state. When my physics professor told me that, I was rather upset than happy. I am here to learn, not to only know couple of equations for the test. College classes are designed to challenge students, not to give easy A’s. My time with Harford Community College was great but not challenging enough. I desire more hands-on experience and research projects, which my community college both lack of. My first year at Jamestown Community College as a student, I accomplished making Part-time Dean’s List two semesters back to back. Beginning college that year my personal goal was to strive making new habits to get the best experience out of college, while keeping up with my grades. When I was a senior in high school my father had his second heart attack and had to have open heart surgery. Upon Graduation from High School in May 2016, I made the decision to move in with my Father who is a sixty-eight-year-old Disabled Vietnam Veteran with many health issues. During my Freshman year at Pearl River Community College, his health had declined and the doctors discovered that he had an aneurysm in his chest and blockages in his legs. Thankfully after his surgery was completed and he was able to come back home, I was to be on break so I could stay with him and help with whatever he needed. As a faculty member, I have experience teaching to diverse audiences. During my time at Youngstown State University, I worked within a student population that had a significant minority and low-income population. I provide opportunities for all students within my courses. In my class, I foster an environment where students are respectful yet feel safe to offer diverse opinions that will be of benefit to everyone in the class. Within my courses I often add an assignment to write about a diversity issue within community. I have also brought speakers to my classes from various minority communities.

My time at Boston College has opened up my eyes to various parts of the country and populations that I had not previously been exposed to and this has greatly shaped how I envision my medical career to be 10 years from now. At this point in the future I will still be starting out, getting the hang of things, learning what I am best at, what I need to improve on, and what I am most passionate about.
