Personal Narrative: My Involvement In The Military

Not all Americans contribute equally to our society. Some fail to participate, by waiving their right to vote or even evading taxes. Of those who do participate, most do not take an active position by running for office, going to meetings and debates, protesting, or even simply writing letters to the officials who represent them. I was one of these people. I didn't think that my involvement would matter, that one person among over 300 million in the United States could make even the slightest difference. The Tennessee American Legion Boys State showed me that I was wrong. At Boys State, I learned that I may have to assume a position of power if I am the most qualified. For various reasons, marching was integral to the operation of Boys State. However, most citizens had never marched before. Even though my previous experience as a marching band member conflicted slightly in style, I still had an advantage. When I saw dozens of my peers struggling to properly march, I saw it as my duty and obligation to help them and provide strong leadership to maintain a cohesive marching bloc. I did, however, have to overcome the barrier that was my previous marching experience. I was trained in a different style, so I had to speedily learn the nuances of this foreign style. From this, I learned volumes about leadership. I learned that there is a place and time for me to serve as a leader; I learned that sometimes the most qualified leaders aren’t necessarily fully qualified, and to respect their efforts to become qualified; I learned that all leaders must overcome some challenges to be successful. They showed me what it was like to be selfless and emotionally strong for the support of others. One such leader, Judge Gary McKenzie, spent a significant part of his career as a prosecutor for child abuse cases. This man, to me, embodies selflessness because he spent so much of his time surrounded by foulness just so that he could protect children, the future. He fought at his own sacrifice to benefit our society as a whole, rather than just himself. He showed me the value and necessity of community and how to support it. His acts have inspired me to be selfless in all that I do, and to dedicate more time to helping those in
