Personal Narrative: My Mother Donja Mcallister

On February 23, 2016, I was confronted with a scare that changed my life dramatically. My Mother Colleen Micele was admitted into Bayonne Hospital due to feeling ill, however, rapidly circumstances changed for the worst. My mother was rushed to the ICU unit and her time she had left us had been decreasing by the hour. My mother developed a condition called Pulmonary Edema which is when the lungs fill with fluid. This condition had caused my mother's lungs to then collapse which lead to my mother develop Atrial Fibrillation. Matters had become extremely severe and life threatening once my mother had become Septic. The uncertainty and living second to second not knowing if my mother would make it through her illness for 5 weeks emotionally destroyed

“If, when you’re older, someone comes knocking on your door asking you some heated questions that you’re not sure how to answer, just stop and say “I want an attorney” and they’ll have to provide you with one as a basic right,” she stressed.

As I got older, my mother constantly told me that to achieve mastery over any one subject, you must get 10,000 hours of practice. This was a reference to the book Outliers, written by Malcolm Gladwell. My mother taught me to be honest, to believe in trust, and to never lie. This inspired me because it made me who I am. Through my life, I have never thought of who was inspiring me to go on; urging me to continue to do what I was doing and to strive and aspire for greater things. Now that I think of it, my mother was the one who was inspiring me. I admire my mom because she has a positive attitude, she works hard, and she explains things to me in a way that makes sense.

Alexus Casidy is out of her teenage years and now twenty, with a whole life ahead. The name Alexus may be a common but, the story of how it was picked, was not. Her father named her after a nurse at a Psychiatric Hospital, that he said was pretty. Not only did he name her after a nurse but, he chose the spelling of the car, Alexus. She grew up with her two younger siblings in Beloit WI, and I am yet to wonder if her sibling’s names have a comical story behind theirs as well. My peer went to high school at Beloit Memorial, graduating in 2015. Where she was an active cheerleading and softball player, also where she met her boyfriend, of three years, Ryan. Most don’t see that she is a mother, student, girlfriend, and employee; holding many different roles in all statuses. Alexus studies at UW Rock County and is undecided with fulfilling her dreams for becoming a children’s nurse or a teacher. Also, is hard-working employee at the factory Prent Corporation in Janesville, WI as an Inspector Packer. Where the money pays for the house her and her boyfriend own, with their one year old, Brooks.

Therefore, an adult that has inspired me is my mother. She has always set the bar high and takes nothing less of the best. My mommy is a single-mother with three kids, (including me), has a full time job and she’s in the Doctorates’ program. Above all, she never makes excuses and never

On November 17,1989 my mother Juanita Renea Ohlinger went into labor at 6:00 A.M. she was in labor for 12hrs. She laid there in so much pain at Providence hospital until Dr. Kendal Foster showed up and told her she had to have a C-section because her pelvis would not expand. The nurse hooked my mother up to monitors and willed her to the operating room, my father Raymond F Smith was dressed in hospital operating clothes. Dr. Foster began to open my mother’s womb and pulled me out at 5:25 pm.

My mother came from a very religious and traditional background. Women like her were expected to get married as soon as they reached the age of eighteen and become housewives. Nobody ever asked them what they wanted to become or what they wanted to achieve in life. It was men who wanted to feel superior and domineering so they placed women in the lowest status as possible. My mother was not the one to let someone else decide her future. She spoke up for herself, knowing that if she didn’t, her future was going to be decided for her. She chose to lead her life the way she imagined to. She chose to further her education. As a result, she inspired many other women, including her own sisters to take on a career and opened their eyes to a world of opportunities. I watched her slip into eternal rest on November 10, 2010; she had finally lost her ten-year battle with cancer. The woman that molded and shaped my world, my mother, had died. Ten years before, the only time I dealt with the medical community was for my yearly checkup and vaccinations. Everyone in my immediate family was healthy and happy. Then she came to me and said she was having excessive vaginal bleeding but was not concerned because she believed it was just fibroids since she had them after she gave birth to my youngest sister in 1987. I would never abandon Danielle, she has been with me since pretty much the day I moved here. The way we started was I asked my cousin Lavell who people were on instagram and i followed a bunch of people which one of them happened to be Danielle. That night I checked my phone and noticed that she had liked a large number of my pictures, so i asked Lavell who she was and he told me a little bit about her. Every day, about 1,500 Americans are expected to die from cancer. Cancer is a disease in which cells divide uncontrollably, destroying vital body tissue. Most people are no stranger to the effects cancer can have on those close to them. I am most certainly no exception. In 2004, Lauren, a 10 year old girl, died from cancer. My mom used to work for her mom, so she was close with Lauren. Before she got sick, Lauren was much like any average girl. She enjoyed doing soccer, Girl Scouts, and loved to play with American Girl dolls. In many ways, she was just like me.

As an immigrant from Ghana, my mother came to the United States, not knowing anybody or much about the new area she was in. She didn’t have any relatives here, and she also hadn’t had much education after finishing high school in Ghana. She wasn’t afforded the opportunity to go to college because she was on her own. My mother has been with the union for nearly twenty years, and directly affected my entire family. Through the union benefits we were blessed with healthcare, and my mother with a job, after she had come to America with nothing. She was, in all her obnoxious finery, dragging the light back in.” (100) It was the day of my memorial and my Grandma Lynn had came a few days before it. My grandma is the queen of fashion so she made sure everyone in my family was going to look their absolute best for my memorial. I love my family so much, that it just brings me pain to have to see them so depressed. I am glad that my grandma can bring some light back into their dark world. Whether it be an actor, famous athlete, or just someone you adore, they inspire you and the decisions you make. To me, that person is my mom. Ever since I could remember, she has been supporting any dreams or goals, I was trying to reach. First of all, my mom grew up poor and she was the youngest out of six children. At the age of three she was placed in a foster home and remained in foster care until she aged out of the system. Overall, I credit the upbringing my mother had to overcome, shaped her into the leader she is today. In my opinion, my mom demonstrates leadership by overcoming obstacles, having a strong work ethic and by giving back to the community.

My mom works as an accountant. I wouldn’t like that job because it’s really hard for me. My mom wants me to get a really good job and she doesn’t want me to get a girl pregnant because then I’m gonna ruin my life because I would have to be taking care of the baby.

Is college right for you? When you think of college, fear is probably the first thing that comes to mind. Coty, a mother of 4 children, 33 years old, and always has a big smile on her face… Well, at least most of the time. She has long black hair, light brown eyes, and if you look closely, a tattoo behind her ear. Most people will assume she’s just a college student but really, she’s a “mom”. I chose to interview Coty because she’s very encouraging and a very talkative person. My mom has a lot to say about her college experience.
