Personal Narrative: My Trip To Barnard

East Carolina University is and has always been a dream school for many students including myself. I have grown up hearing about the University and it is nothing short of spectacular. Many family members of mine have attended East Carolina, and I have always pictured myself at this school. It would be an honor to be a pirate. In my last two years of highschool I duel enrolled St. Petersburg Community College, my local community college. In my senior year I decided to take online classes due to the very long drive to the nearest campus. I ended up taking Calculus with Analytic Geometry and two other classes online. My Calculus proffessor did not teach or provide any materiel to learn from other than the text book and homework questions. For the first quarter of the class I did well and completed all the assignments easily; however, the class got harder and the textbook no longer provided me with enough information to complete the assignments. I struggled through this part of the class and had a hard time mainting my grade which I wanted to keep as high as possible. After several trips to the campus for tutoring and spending hours trying to find other external resources I began to learn how to solve the problems and brought my grade back up and finally passed the class with an A.

Before coming to James Madison University I had no clue what I wanted to get involved in. Whether it was a club sport, business related group, or a social fraternity I just wanted to be apart of something that was bigger than myself. At the beginning of the school year I looked into tryouts for club baseball, the Madison Investment Fund and rush schedules for fraternities on campus. I quickly found out that club baseball wasn’t for me, at least for my freshman year. I then asked around about MIF and got the sense that you needed a very heavy Economics background and that it was very challenging to be accepted as a freshman. UNC Wilmington has been my top pick for the college I want to attend to obtain my Bachelor’s degree in Business ever since I was a Junior in high school. I applied for the fall 2016 to spring 2017 semester my senior year of high school and was not accepted into UNC Wilmington. I knew I had a big decision to make and I needed to figure out what I was going to do since I was not accepted into UNC Wilmington. I had been accepted to other universities and I could have easily attended one of them instead but I knew where I really wanted to be was UNC Wilmington. I finally made the decision to take one year at Cape Fear Community College and work hard to get my GPA up to where it needs to be in order to be considered for the fall 2017 semester. Last year was my first year as a college student. After much anticipation, I was finally starting my university career and studying what I wanted. Classes started and everything was okay, but deep down I knew I wanted to study away from home. When graduating high school I had decided to stay, thinking it was the smartest decision since going to college is not the easiest transition and adding going to another country would have been too much for me. But two weeks into my first semester I decided to start my research.

The saying goes “if you love something, set it free. If it comes back, it is yours forever. If it doesn't, then it never was yours at all.” This past fall semester I had to set myself free from the one place I loved to be the most and that was Millersville University. Millersville has been a place that I can whole heartedly call home. From the view of Miller and S’ville at the pond to walking through the SMC to being welcomed by all who see you on campus. I even loved my classes for I had professors who put everything into their teaching and wanted the best for their students. I had to give it all away this past semester and it hurt me so bad.

HELLO GUYS!!! I have something veryyyyyyyy important to tell you! After all of my stressing about FAFSA ( Free Application Federal Student Aid) , Colleges, and Transportation, I decided to further my education at Rowan University. It took me a long time to make this decision because this wasn’t my first choice! My first choice/ dream school was LIU Brooklyn ( Long Island University) in Brooklyn, New York. I was recently accepted there and planned on attending there, but their out-of-state tuition was extremely high! Their tuition was $33,000 a year and poor black man like myself, cannot afford it. I really loved LIU because it's a great school, beautiful campus, and most of all, it's in New York. I had my whole planned before it even started,

National Honors Society is an amazing opportunity to be chosen for. By being accepted, it shows that the hard work that I have done in the classroom, and in the community have done well for not only the community but for myself as a person. Since I have started High-school, I have done many volunteer hours at my church. I have done many things such as help lead game-time for the little ones during a learning program called Awana. Awana is a program done by some churches to help raise children to love and serve God. I also help most Sundays in the sound room at church. Wilmington started out as home, then became just a vacation. After years of moving and resisting the pull to move back, I finally made the best and brightest decision I think I have ever made. I am moving home, and in the process, I thought there would be no better place to further my education than The University of North Carolina at Wilmington. Wellesley College is an extraordinary college that provides all I could ever seek in a college. It has various majors to choose from, extraordinary interactions with professors and students, and an inspirational atmosphere full of great women from various backgrounds. I never knew that such college would have all the preferences I wanted.        On Thursday, August 20th 2015 I was accepted into College of Southern Nevada. On Friday, August 21st, 2015 I arrived onto the CSN West Charleston Campus at around seven o'clock in the morning to be one of the first people to take the math, reading, and writing placement tests for the day. After I took the placement tests, I went to the Student Recruitment office and spoke to a woman named Kimiko Walton. I told Kimiko about what happened to me and she recruited me. Afterwards, I purchased my textbooks from the bookstore (a typical mistake made by college freshmens). Prior to attending Algonquin college for my first year in the practical nursing program, I had a rather large break from my academic studies. Being out of school for over five years, I can’t say I remember the entirety of my experiences in English courses. What I do remember, and what stands true to this point, is that I am not very fond of English classes. From as far back as I can remember, I always struggled with spelling and grammar. Throughout elementary, secondary, and post-secondary school, English was always the one subject that I just couldn’t ace. English courses make me feel overwhelmed and anxious, as I know I am being critiqued on the one thing I am not good at.

Writing has always played a huge role in my life. I’ve been reading writing for as long as I can remember as I have an immense love of reading. This love would grow into a love for writing as well; I still stumble upon journals and writings from my five-year-old self about the happenings in my kindergarten class. As time would go on I would discover academic writing, and how to convey my thoughts on what was the topic of student that particular year or semester in my schooling.
