When I was younger, every summer my travel baseball team participated in the conference, regional, and hopefully state. But this particular summer in 2012 on our “U-14” travel team, will never leave my memory. As most might think, baseball is not always the most intriguing sport, but the series of events leading to the most exciting time of my life could leave even the most “baseball-skeptical” person speechless. Our miraculous run through the state tournament begins in the seventh inning of the regional championship battle between longtime rivals South Park (my team) and Kannapolis. After winning their first five games by a combined score of 43-2, (yes 43-2 it’s still a record) South Park found themselves up 14-0 on Number One seeded, and …show more content…
Our state tournament begins with a trip to Wilmington, to play at the stunning UNC Wilmington Stadium. As we wake up on Monday morning, alarms ringing us out of our tremendously comfortable Marriott beds, we make our way to the stadium to see our paths and seeding. Expected to be a top six seed, we are astonished to see that we have, not only the hardest path, but the lowest seeding. You could call this motivation for what was to occur in the next six days, or you could laugh this off. We chose option one. Playing against top teams in the state, against competition who already are yielding offers from the best college teams in the nation, we refused no challenge. As we pass through the 100 plus degree weather, the whirling winds raging over thirty miles per hour, and the biting bugs surrounding us at every step we take, our dominance continues from the regional tournament. From game one to game seven, we outscore our opponents 85-10. The mercy-rule was required in all of our games, as we showed no mercy for the competition, because we had something to prove. We spend our …show more content…
Still to this day, the memories of that summer and those state and regional tournaments reside in my head like they happened just last week, and those are the best kind of
About three weeks ago, the Packer Varsity baseball team beat Berkeley Carroll school for the first time in twelve years and in glorious fashion. Tears streamed down my face as our winning run crossed the plate in extra innings, dust flying up as my teammates and I mobbed each other at the plate. Yet a few short days later, our team was blindsided by the news that St. Ann’s had pulled off back to back upsets to squeak their way into the playoffs ahead of us - just as our season seemed to be looking up, it was over.
With the Christmas tournament aside, we entered the post-season without a loss. We had a plan for each playoff game from districts to regional. We never deviated from the plan, keeping our eye on the target –
March is one of the craziest, fun-filled, exciting months of the year, especially for people who love basketball. St. Patrick’s Day arrives, the warmth is just starting to come back; but that is not the best part, it’s all the March Madness. The NCAA Basketball Tournament brings happiness, laughter and upsets to some people and teams. Every Division 1 Basketball team in the country plays to eventually make it to the Sweet Sixteen on the bracket, in hopes of being the new NCAA Basketball Champions. Some teams struggle, while others come out on top. “The Game That Saved March Madness” written by Sean Gregory, Time staff writer who has been
You don't hear everyday a high school team winning state championships that often, but at Archbishop Wood it's sort of common. I proudly can say I am one of the few that has not one, but two state championship rings under my belt. As a sophomore AND a junior in high school, my basketball team accomplished being State Champions two years in a row. The first year we won was one of the best experiences of being apart of a team. After losing in the state championship the year before, we knew we had to somehow get back the next year and make sure we'd come out with the trophy. As the new season began in November of 2016, we played in the Nike tournament of champions in Arizona. The trip was one of the most memorable trips ever with the best group of girls. We had a blast,
A three-run home run in the bottom of the seventh by Alex Bishop and an insurance run in the eighth by UT Tyler spoiled a comeback by the LeTourneau University baseball team in the opening round game of the 2016 ASC Baseball Tournament Blue Bracket. The matchup was a rematch of the last two champions of the American Southwest Conference Tournament.
Although the Southern Oregon weather hasn’t particularly indicated the start of spring, the season of new beginnings has commenced and brought along with it a fresh new Pirate baseball team thirsty for success. With a varied degree of experience at their repertoire, the Phoenix Pirates look to revitalize a program that has missed the playoffs by one single spot in the past two consecutive years. After completing their preseason with a record over .500, the team transitioned into the league contests and was quickly confronted with some struggles. Through their first six games, the boys were only able to pick up two victories (both against Klamath Union in a double header). They managed to compete with two of the toughest teams in the state when battling against Hidden Valley and Henley, but ultimately dropped all three of the contests featuring those ball clubs. Despite a rocky start, the Pirates seemed poised to make a run for the playoffs coming off a competitive double header in Henley that certainly boosted their confidence for the ensuing games.
The Pioneer boys basketball team has strung together three impressive weeks to end January. After a slow start to the new year, winning one and losing two in the first week of January, Alder has won six in a row. Those six wins highlight a win 59 to 47 over the Division-1 Hilliard Darby Panthers on January 19 and 60 to 44 win over their conference and county foe, Fairbanks. Junior guard Andrew Koenig’s scoring has assisted the Pioneers’ success over this long. He put up a career-high 33 points against Fairbanks. When asked about his team’s success over the past few weeks, he said, “ “ The Pioneers finish out January with a grueling, three game week. On Monday the 25th, Alder beat Shekinah Christian with a score of 90 to 77. They followed
Both teams experienced and overcame adversity on their way to becoming champs. Just two weeks ago, the men’s team played in a tune-up, or preseason, tournament, winning all their early games only to end up losing two games in a row to Lakenheath, ultimately losing the tune-up.
In the summer of 2016, my tournament baseball team won the state championship for Texas.
I believe this is a hopeful lesson. It’s easy to feel defeated when playing against people who have paid a great deal more attention to college basketball. But single-elimination tournaments are cruel. Every unexpected upset can upend even the wisest player’s entire bracket, as you may have gathered from the banshee’s wail of the defeated on Facebook as the tournament progresses. Given that your potential points double each round, you can sneak in a win by hanging on to a few teams that go deep, even if your first round looked like a disaster.
“It was a great experience participating in state. My coaches and teammates was always there to support me.” said Stewart-Gipson, “I could hear my teammates and family in the stands rooting for me while I was wrestling. They helped
The state tournament was next week it was the biggest tournament of the year. They had practice every day for two hours up till the tournament. Their first game was on Thursday at 12 pm so they had to get out of school early for it. They played a really good team from the south called the kings. It was going to be a fight if they wanted to win this one. Thursday had came and the team was ready for the game. The Hawks scored just 30 seconds into the game. Frank cheered from the bench. The Kings answered right back making it 1-1 after the first period. There coach came into their locker room furious and said the team could do better. The second under way and the Kings lead 2-1. The Hawks take a time out and answer back making it 2-2. Frank still has not played but he encourages his teammates on the bench. There were five minutes left in the third period and it is all tied up 3-3. The clock was winding down and one of Frank's teammate Cody scores with just a minute left making it 4-3. The hawks win and advance to the semifinals tomorrow against the
Entering my senior year my basketball team was having lots of success and was lucky enough to make it to the regional finals for the fourth year in a row. Unfortunately we came up short in this game the past three years against the same opponent two of the three times. Summit Country Day quickly became our rival in that we have played them in the playoffs for the past three years. We currently have one up on the record being two wins and one loss. The one time we lost to them they ended winning the state title. We were determine to win this game again and finally get over the hump and making it to the state games at the Jerome Schottenstein Center, and having a chance to win the state championship.
The team and I had four practices to prepare for the grueling week ahead. The only teams we knew in the tournament were Alexandria and Virginia as we played them during the regular season. What we didn't know was the intense competitiveness of the other 3 teams. Mainly, we heavily depended on stats to predict how good of a game it will be. We had to win 3 games
I remember the game winning point in Van Horn Iowa. We Bump, Set, Hit.... It was a kill!. The crowd goes viral. It's 2016 and the Sailor Nation 7th graders are on there way to state!
