Sticking With It
The fan spun so quickly that it caused a whisking hiss. The sun beating through the slanted window heating the room to eighty degrees. We spoke loudly over the fan, sitting together side by side, on two scorching hot sticky leather chairs, at my black glass desk against the wall of my room. Wearing her favorite pair of jeans and a new grey shirt, Maddie bought earlier that day, she sat up straight. You could tell by the tone of her voice, she felt confident, because she knew a lot about the sport because she has been riding for a long time. Her mother and grandmother first introduced Maddie to horseback riding when she was eleven years old. Her grandmother rode horses when she was young and this is what sparked her mom to ride. With Maddie and Olivia (her sister) riding, this has turned into a family tradition. The main reason Maddie said she rides is, “you create an emotional connection with the horse”. That emotional connection with her horse kept her going through multiple moves. Her father was in medical school and always switching positions. She has moved a total of thirteen times in her life. Riding is a sport, amongst others, in which money actually matters. Money limits you to breeds of horses, lessons, equipment, food, travel, care, and time. Working at a barn to earn money towards board or lessons helps reduces the cost. I watched as the flashes of orange lights from cars raced past me through the city, and knew there were no signs of any possibilities that there would be a place to keep a horse. I lived in northern Virginia near Washington D.C., where the city was filled with gigantic, tall office buildings with gray and gloomy windows. Today we gather here in the remembrance of Megan Marie Brincks. She was known as daughter, mother, and grandmother throughout her life. As a small child, Megan always had a passion for horses just as every other little girl did. Her life revolved around them and her dream job had always been a veterinarian. Throughout junior high and high school that dream remained strong. Although she was involved in volleyball, track, FFA, spanish and book club, horses were still her number one priority.
In the space of two years, Kristine Hewlett was thrown from her mare, Cher and broker her back both times. The accidents occurred while Hewlett was at her riding lesson on her mare, Cher when the horse suddenly spooked. Julie Goodnight was raised on a horse farm in Orlando, Florida, where she was raised riding horses.
