“Save to the hard drive” my inspirational psychology instructor always tells his classes. He wants us to remember things for the long haul. In middle school I was the type of student who could quickly cram before a test and still pass it with flying colors. Unfortunately, this crammed knowledge was never retained. When I went to high school I abruptly learned that my original study habits would not suffice. The high school years that followed caused me to learn that the best way to be successful was to build upon all the information I have gathered over the years. During my high school years I acquired many study tools to help me face this challenge. One study habit I developed was to write all my notes in a notebook that way I had all my
In the section “Tips from the Science of Memory-for Studying and for Life”, found in our textbook, “Experience Psychology”, the Arthur Laura A. King discusses the importance of study habits. She addresses the skills needed to turn short-term memory into long-term memory through organizing, encoding, rehearsing and retrieving the information we study and memorize. “No matter what the model of memory you use, you can sharpen your memory by thinking deeply about the “material” of life and connecting the information to other things you know.” (King. 2013).
Important things to remember when taking notes is that you don’t have to write everything down and try to avoid having to get a classmates notes to copy. Another thing to do is read the textbook. When you read the textbook highlight important things that relate don’t just highlight facts and definitions. The last thing Dr. Chew talks about in this video is group studying. When you are in a group study make sure to set realistic goals and work towards them. If one of them members is causing you to not reach that goal because they are not focused ask them to leave. You also need to make sure the study doesn’t become a social gathering stay focused and on
1. Well, to begin with, most importantly, I like to learn in a peaceful and calm surrounding because that helps in building concentration. I don't like a messy work area because it causes a distraction, so I try to make the area organized if possible. I get distracted easily so, if I am studying near a window, I close the blinds so I won't look outside, turn off the radio, television, etc. I start going through will all easy questions, then I work on the harder questions. Every time I think that I am tired or been studying for a very long time, I take a 30-minute break and I make sure that I am not over-doing it, that way I can take in the best.
My personal favorite is to use flash cards. Flashcards are just a form of word association, when you see or hear certain words you immediately start to think of something other than that word. For example, if you say dessert, I think of Apple Pie, then ice cream. Studying with word association works the same way, so if I say President, I think of the current president and the powers of the president. Another way to study effectively is to reward yourself for learning a set of information. For example, when I finish a chapter of note taking and I know the chapter, I watch an episode of Parks and Recreation. This way you take a little break as well as doing what you like to do. Studying this way allows studying to become less of a
Two strategies that have helped me take on new information and learn is rereading the material and jotting down notes while doing it. This helps me recall things I may have missed and it’s also serves as a nice visual
Stepping on to the scratched up ice, however still gleaming in all the light. I remember shaking of fright and of the cold atmosphere surrounding me. Not knowing what was coming next. Will I fall?, Miss a step? Forget my program? Soon enough my music would start and I would be off. Thinking about my program, hoping I wouldn't mess anything up. It was all a big blur, nothing was clear to me. The audience was filled with parents and skaters from all parts of the COS (Central Ontario Section). The judges seemed to be staring me down, trying not to look at their mean, cold eyes, I stepped on the ice. Everyone staring at me, it made me very uncomfortable, and I felt pretty awkward being there. I tried not to show my fear, however I don't think I did that very well. There was this little girl at her first skating competition, and the first one to go, how will she do?
While in LPN class it was easy for me to study. I had no kids. My method of studying is just reading the materials over and over out loud. Then after I have read the material,I know it may sound crazy. I have to act like I’m teaching a class the same lesson and I also answer the question for my class. Repetition is the best way for me to learn. Repetition strengthens the connections between neurons and makes it easier for impulses to travel along the pathway.(Science, 2014). So therefore it makes a clear pathway in your brain to remember information that is learned. What haven’t worked at all for me is joining a study group. To many people leaves too much time for me to socialize on other topics rather than the topic at hand. To me there is
Studying is a task that seemed to be easy for me, but the quiz revealed I have major holes in my strategy. I scored a 31 out of 50 on the study habits quiz, this revealed that many things can be improved upon. The most beneficial study habit that I can obtain is learning how to study differently for every test. I can use models to study instead of reading a textbook, using models would grab my attention and engulf me into the content I am trying to learn. Receiving help from an instructor is something I rarely do. If I am struggling with a topic I need to contact my teacher instead of googling information about the subject. Using the internet to find information is dangerous because it does not always concur with the information my teacher
Taking higher level courses can require plenty of studying, therefore we need to learn faster and efficient ways to retain our information. I always study for all of my courses, and I study in the afternoon. I find myself studying through repetition and rehearsal, and I study whenever I possibly can.
The majority of students develop study habits that may not be effective in the long run or suitable for their learning style. According to a research done by psychologists Henry Roediger and Mark McDaniel, re-reading information over and over again is one common mistake students make. They may often wonder why they fail exams even though they are studying for a long period of time. Studying a short amount of the material every day after class for at least twenty minutes will help you retain the information a lot better than to cram everything the
Personally, for me I usually tried to do that during my vacation time. I had to save all my files first to CDs or DVDs, later to external hard drives, collect everything necessary (including all the serial numbers - just to realize that I was missing the one or other once I killed the hard drive), and reformat the computer. Additionally, you had to install your operating system again, all the software you had, add your preferred settings from the color of the windows up to your desktop wallpaper.
There are many techniques when it comes to studying. First you must go to class and do your homework, this is basic and helps you know exactly what needs to be studied. Although basic, if you don't have this information you will not know precisely what to study and risk being ignorant of questions included in the next test, thus risking failure. Don't think the syllabus will save you, it's a myth. Once you know what needs to be reviewed, the power is in your hands. There are many websites you
It had been dark, and looking back at it, Magnolia could see how her intentions had easily been misinterpreted. After all, manipulating gigantic chunks of metal around a room with what appears to be a stick would be quite uncanny, especially for one who is not used to magic. -------------------------------------------------------------------
No matter what I am trying to learn I need to remember a few things.
There is not only reading assignments, but lab, and class work also. While in the classroom, and during the lecture it is important to obtain valuable notes. Another video about strategies in note taking was useful. It emphasized the importance of being well organized, and having the correct materials. It is recommended to have a three ring binder, loose leaf paper, a three-hole punch, pen, pencil, highlighters, and a ruler. If you’re well organized, it will be easier to review while learning, and studying. I have purchased each one of these materials along with manila folders to help keep my units separated. I will also practice the various strategies for taking notes. When I return from class each evening, and after I review the lectures on line I will reflect on what I learned, and rewrite it in my own words. I will also utilize a few minutes each week to analyze previous
