I have been a part of my school’s annual clothing drive since the start of the 2015 school year. The clothing drive runs in November every year and its purpose is to collect unwanted clothes by students and their families, which are donated to people in need in Toronto via the St. Vincent de Paul Society. In both the years that I have been a volunteer in this organization, about 3000+ articles of clothing have been donated by my school, Brebeuf College. My position in the organization was Lead Representative and volunteer. My role was to promote the organization to the student body within the school through announcements, attend daily meetings, collect and organize donated clothes, move all the sorted articles of clothing to the St. Vincent …show more content…
Being the only grade 12 in the organization, I found that the younger members found it difficult to approach me or communicate with me because of the age difference. I overcame this problem by getting to know and connecting with each one of the students helping out during the meetings; all it took was a little time and communication. Another internal challenge within the organization I faced, was that it conflicted with my everyday schedule. All the meetings and volunteer work occurring right after school withheld me from being able to go home right after school to watch over my sister. However, I was able to make an arrangement with my neighbours that included my sister going over to her friend’s house after school during times I had clothing drive meetings. A challenge I experienced in my high school that was external of the clothing drive was the downcast on my reputation because I decided to volunteer for a school activity, which sadly translated to my friends as “wasting time”. Since I was brought up with a strong sense of self-worth, I quickly argued my friends’ statements, telling them this activity was something I enjoyed and as a result it is not a waste of time, thus I will continue doing it. I also invited them to join the organization. Those were the many challenges I faced during my volunteer time with the clothing drive that I believe strengthened me as a
I am a volunteer for Camp Kesem, a program that provides support and puts on a summer camp for children and teens whose parents have been affected by cancer. The past year I have volunteered with the organization at "bar-canning" and "tailgate-canning" events, where I have fundraised for and informed people about Camp Kesem. I also organized a flag-football team for one of our largest campus fundraisers, "Football for the Fight." Lastly, I was accepted as a volunteer counselor for this year's summer camp, where I will be a cabin leader for 11-12 year-old
Church, temple, sanctuary, or the Lords’s house, these are just a few names that your average person might call the place you come to worship God, I have always called it home. The Church I have been attending, Memorial Baptist Church, which is also where I attend high school, I have been attending since I was the age of three years old. Moving to the area that my family lives in now, I do not believe is any accident. At the age of two years old, my father was stationed in Tennessee for the military. After passing away from brain cancer, my Mother moved my two older sisters and me to Killeen Texas, to be closer to her family. Memorial Baptist Church was the only church we have ever been members of since moving to Texas, it has always felt like
My leadership role as co-president of National Honor Society has affected me greatly in the two years I have been apart of the organization. The organization has taught and grown characteristics, such as leadership, cooperation, and determination, in myself, and in turn I have spread to others. The organization has also shown me the importance of volunteering, and how I can directly contribute to the bettering of my community through volunteering. During my time in the National Honor Society I have completed over 130 hours of community service. This year specifically I have been placed in charge of the recycling program and the road cleanup program. The recycling program consists of placing bins in each classroom for paper and plastic products,
One particular activity that I feel has made a difference in the community is my participation in Mini-THON, a student-led philanthropic organization that raises money for research in pediatric cancer and benefits Four Diamonds and Penn State Hershey Children’s Hospital. I have served as the Junior and Senior Co-Chair, or President, for the past two years, respectively. Each year, my responsibilities have expanded from simply attending meetings and contributing ideas for fundraisers, to actively coordinating meetings and organizing fundraisers with local businesses. For example, our club held our first annual “Teenie-THON” for elementary school students. We spent countless hours creating advertisements and permission slips for the participants.
I was professed on Palm Sunday, April 15, 1984. There were four of us – Janice and Dick McCarthy, who now belong to St. Clare fraternity in Delaware. Jerry Hopp, who is now enjoying his reward in the communion of saints. We were professed at St. Elizabeth’s Church, Ellerslie Avenue, in Baltimore City. Our formation director, who shall remain nameless, left the Order after losing an election. In 1983-84 we had many people seeking a deeper spiritual way of life, through the Secular Franciscan Order. At the time I was in initial formation, Mary Our Queen had two groups. Our group started before the second group, but they were professed first. We asked for more time to discern because we became aware of how serious a commitment we were
By doing this, it will not only make for a better community, but it will also provide a sense of unity and enrich the fulfillment of society members within the community. The National Honor Society as a whole can run a monthly food drive, in doing so, non-perishable food items can be gathered and distributed to those in need. In addition to having food drives; other drives can be factored in, such as winter clothing and shoes. There is a multitude of students that attend school and do not have the proper clothing for the season. Before winter begins, a winter coat drive can be held, and the donations can be dispersed among the students who do not own one, as well as others living in the community. As well as implementing food and donation drives, we can also implement a soup kitchen. The soup kitchen can be held within our school, where it is warm and cozy for those who may not have a comfortable home environment. The soup kitchen can be held every week; fundraisers and donations will help finance the soup kitchen, and it will bring a new found appreciation within the community. We will be helping people that are financially incapable of providing for
I attend Gospel Light Freewill Independent Baptist Church in Thomasville, NC. It’s a relatively small church, with about 50-70 people on a Sunday morning. My grandmother, my aunt, and my uncle attend this church as well. I consider myself to be a child of God and a true “born again” Christian. Being “born again” means that one has accepted God into their heart and has been changed on the inside. I accepted him into my heart on October 9th, 2012. Growing up strictly in an independent Baptist church, I didn’t know that other churches were different, at least not until I visited my boyfriend’s church which is Southern Baptist. My pastor preaches heavily on hell-fire and brimstone. He walks up and down the altar, yelling and jumping. There are
Field sobriety tests are the subject of hot debate. On one hand, a motorist that's clearly over the legal alcohol limit will usually display characteristic behavior that makes them easy to spot. On the other hand, many of the field tests require skills that could be compromised for reasons other than inebriation. In fact, in a U.S. Department of Transportation study, no field sobriety test was 100% accurate. This makes it difficult to say whether these tests are useful or a detriment to motorist's basic rights.
After worship at church, our team rented a Mercedes van and a minivan. It was my first time in a van and it was pretty cool. This van was especially large and could seat 18 people. During the time we were on the road, I got to read a book, talk with my dad, and talk with my friends. We got to eat dinner at Chipotle and we drove to the church. We passed the houses, which were very small. Some of them of them had a weather-beaten and rundown look. Finally, we arrived at Eight Street Community Church..
In 1920s, due to urbanization, Chicago’s population was 2.7 million, which is 90 times more than in 1870s. European immigrants and people from rural places moved to cities. This demographic change brought, among other things, new religious. Catholics, Jews, Protestants, Christians, and also Irish, Poland, Italy Catholics, European Jews, black Protestants from the American South and Midwest. They all had to learn how to live together and respect each other.
I have taken an active role in many clubs and various activities during my high school career. I have donated most of my time, however, to the B+ club, as a leader sophomore and junior year and co-president senior year. B+ is an organization that raises funds for families battling pediatric cancer and for cancer research. The main event for our B+ club is the annual student-run volleyball tournament during the winter; it’s such a fun night filled with friendly rivalries on the court while thousands of dollars are raised for the organization. During my sophomore year, I helped implement a new “care package” program, which I have led and we have continued ever since. We fill the “care packages” with games, candy, blankets, and more, and given
Webster’s dictionary defines teaching as: “one that teaches; especially: one whose occupation is to instruct.” However, teaching is so much more than that, it is the ability to instruct future generations yes, but also to aid in the development of the student in all aspects. Some students have a harder time developing the whole person, meaning that they have a harder time developing the physical, cognitive, and emotional-social parts of themselves all at the same time and pace. A student observation of a typical 2nd grade classroom was completed and one child stood out among the rest in his setting in both of their characteristics and stages of development. In order to protect the rights of the student, for the length of this paper, the
On Saturday, October 1st I visited the Goodwill of Champaign in order to volunteer my time to help out the community. We started off the morning learning about where certain items are in the store and meeting the store manager Diane. Then we were split up within our group and assigned to different jobs in the store: putting out clothes on the floor, hanging clothes, and working in the backroom. I was assigned to hang clothes and was working closely with the Goodwill employee Oti. She was a very nice woman and explained to me how their sorting process works so I could be successful when helping out. I found out that there are 90 hangers per “rack” and ways in which clothes are specifically hung. A skill that is important in order to work
St. Vincent's Academy is a school I admire and that I want to attend. I admire st. Vincent's for the beautiful sisterhood it has and the higher curriculum it includes. I am a artistic young lady as well, so I love how St. Vincent's has many different activities. I also indulge in the different sports I can chose from. I've heard thousands of wonderful things about St. Vincent's. Attending Freshman for a daymade me want to be a part of the sisterhood at St. Vincent's. I believe St. Vincent's will help me achieve my dream of enrolling in a great college since my parents never got the chance
uddhism began in northeastern India and is based on the teachings of Siddhartha Gautama. The religion is 2,500 years old and is followed by 350 million Buddhists worldwide.
