Eve?” Armani called into the small room, opening the door. Evangeline laid on a pile of blankets, their back turned to the door. “You okay?” He asked. Evangeline didn’t respond. “Well, I know what today is, and I hate to bother you like this, but there are six human newbies and they need you.” Armani said quietly. Evangeline stayed silent and unmoving for a moment before sitting up. “Yeah, I’ll be down in five. I’ll be testing the extent of their magic, so you don’t have to stay if you don’t want to. What are their ages?” “ There are two 12 year olds, two 14 year olds, a 15 year old, and a 16 year old.” Armani immediately responded. Evangeline sighed. “Did you explain to the last one that any possibility of magic usage is impossible …show more content…
My name is Evangeline, and I’m not a girl. If you are going to speak about me, use they instead of she, them instead of her. If you can’t do that, leave now.” They waited a few seconds. “Which one of you is 16?” They asked. A tall boy with short black hair and light brown skin stepped forward with little hesitation. “That’d be me, Evangeline. I’m Bimisi Frost, but I go by Misi.” He held out his hand. Evangeline didn’t even acknowledge it. “Go with Armani. He’ll show you how you can help.” Misi looked at them for a moment before walking toward Armani, who rushed him out. “I’ll talk to you later, Eve.” He said, smiling a small smile. “Just go help Misi, don’t let him wander.” They responded, but they smiled back, and Armani left. “Now, who are you five?” When none of them responded, Evangeline sighed. “Listen, I know how scary this can be, but you have to suck it up. I’m not saying now, but eventually, you have to get over it. This is dangerous, what we’re doing. We risk being killed every day. But we still fight.” Evangeline paused for a moment. “We still fight because we know that this world can still be saved. Now, I need to test the extent of your magic, so just tell me your damn names so I know what to call you.” “I-I’m Kelli Saunders.” A short black girl stuttered out, stepping forward. “Now this is what I like to see. How old are you, Kelli?” …show more content…
They couldn’t cry, they couldn’t show such weakness. They were the leader of a god damn revolution, they couldn’t afford to be weak. But even so, Evangeline could not fight off the waves of despair as they thought of Piper. The way her nose would crinkle when she smiled, the way she always encouraged Evangeline, no matter how little the situation. The way she’d hum softly into their ear to help calm them down during a thunderstorm. Evangeline would give anything to see their mother one more time, to hear her gentle voice once again. They grabbed their necklace, and to their surprise, it warmed up immediately. “Evangeline, do not worry. I may not be there physically, but I’ll always be there. I know you mourn my loss, and I want you to know that that’s okay. It is okay to cry, Evangeline. Emotion is not a sign of weakness, it is a sign that you are just one person. You try your very hardest, the least you could do for yourself is mourn properly.” “I miss you.” Evangeline whispered, a few tears
“Matthew and mark will,” she replied. “But I don’t want to be a burden on them. I want to do something with my life. Figure out ways to help other third kids. Make-’’
“Charan Seth,” replies a boy with dark skin, short raven black colored hair, and light brown eyes. “Private. Seventeen years old.”
On our way up the stairs to our unit, a girl named Jada came up behind me. “So why are you here?” I was thrown off by the personal question she asked so casually. Only an hour prior I had arrived at the facility and was introduced to the other eleven teenagers.
“You took longer than usual. Did you take a detour? Make out with any cheerleader’s boyfriend?” Evan asked. “I heard it was you. How could you seduce such a reasonable young man and use him to satisfy your own sick needs?” Steven asked as they switched places. It suddenly dawned on her that the only ones who would create rumors about her were her own brothers and suddenly she became furious. “Why would you do that?” she screamed at them. The boys flinched, they didn’t expect her to retaliate. “Do you honestly hate me that much that you’d allow a bunch of girls to beat me up over something I didn’t do? I ran for my life because of you. I was so scared, but I had no reason to be!” Her breathing seemed to echo throughout the house as they stood in surprise to Elora’s outbreak. She couldn’t take it, she wanted to cry. She was not a toy to her evil twin brothers, she did not want to be played with and pushed around. She let them fall. She sank to her knees and cried. The boys parted as her mother came running up the stairs. She too seemed truly surprised to find her daughter crying. She ordered the boys to their room and helped Elora to her feet. She cooed sweet things in her ear and wiped her tears away. They went downstairs and prepared dinner together.
“What are their names?” asked Rion, smiling down at his tiny new siblings. “You’d picked out only one girl name, but now we have two?”
“Bravo, Mark,” said Jacob sarcastically. “You really have these babies fooled,” despite each of them being just as old as them, 14 years old.
“Okay. Oh god. I’ll be there in just a bit? Are the kids with you?” He asked and she confirmed that the kids were in the hospital waiting room with her. “Okay, i’ll be there in a bit.”
“Actually, I think that I’m older than you. I saw you twenty years ago, and I’m pretty sure that you looked the same. I was just wondering whether you were two or three hundred. You don’t look much older than that.”
“Calm down and be quiet!” the harsh voice said. “You are not going to die today, but if the men who run this place hear you, you probably will.” “They’ll think you’re planning an escape and they’ll use whatever weapon you have in your room to kill you. Your weapon should’ve been in a locked iron box. I guess they thought you would’ve still been unconscious.” Candace had so many different questions but the one that seemed to slip out of her mouth first was “Who are you and why are we here?” There was a three second silence but it felt like the longest three seconds of Candace Verbeck’s life.
"Oh dear. I'm sorry to say but your mother passed away recently. She was in a car accident." "W-what?" I said tears in my eyes. "I'm sorry."
“So age is a factor? Money, prestige, access doesn’t trump your principals,” he blurted. “You’ve changed my mind about your intelligence. I’ll give you your good looks.”
"Oh yeah, I was just saying hi to some of my old friends." Reena, Tanaya, and Ellie's mouth dropped as they processed this. "Er, and these are also some of my cousin's Sarah's friends."
“We’ll try one more time, but then we’re going to get some help,” I said. Out of nowhere, the walls of the clock tower slowly slithered toward us, locking Salim, Kat, and I inside.
"We only have 20 minutes. So here's what you have to do," Elli's mom said, continuing, "You are going to have to run down there, really quickly, while I stay behind and wait for you all."
"Follow me." Mr Way said, beckoning Frank with his hand. They made it to literature and chemistry, gathering the three kids and the art teacher in the middle of the hallway outside of Mr Brown 's room.
