The Seatbelt That Saved My Life Have you ever had a near-death experience? I have. It was a Sunday. May 17th, 2015; I was twelve years old at the time. My dad, sisters, our two dogs, and I were visiting my dad’s (at the time) girlfriend, Kerri, in Devil’s Lake and were just about to head back to our small house in Minot. It was one of those weird, inbetween days of spring where the ice had started melting and turning the ground into mud, but not all the way. There were still random patches of ice on the road. Kerri warned us to be careful on our way back home. My dad brushed her off, teasing her about her motherliness and asking her if she doubted his truck-driving skills. She retaliated that we should leave, lest we get home too late and sleep in past our first period classes. My dad laughed and decided to go. We said our goodbyes and headed out. All was well for the first hour of the trip, until it wasn’t. I was sitting in the backseat on the passenger’s side, reading on my phone and minding my own business. The quietness of the truck was disrupted by expletives rolling out of my dad’s mouth. I looked up to see us sliding diagonally across the road onto a patch of mud.
Then, in an instant, the wheels stopped. Suddenly we were rolling. Crashing around in our huge, blue truck all I felt was vertigo. The only thing keeping us from bouncing around the mega cab like bouncy balls were the seatbelts we all had on. I heard screams, but I wasn’t sure if they were mine or
amount of their freedom to ensure order, safety, security and peace. According to Bertram (2010), Rousseau pointed out that rational beings consent to have a government in order for them to have a richer and more orderly life than would otherwise be possible.
There are many people who do not understand the importance of seat belts for safety. They do not wear their seat belts even though they know the mortality statistics. Most of them think that seat belts do not help when an accident occurs. We have all made the excuse that the seat belt is uncomfortable. Driving is a dangerous duty that should always be practiced with more caution and care. Some people think that not wearing a seatbelt is rebellious. Other people think that they will never get into accident. Some of the consequences of not wearing a seat belt is that you could die, you can get injured and many more. So far, the only way to avoid these consequences from happening is to wear a seatbelt.
On a sunny afternoon in May of 2013 I learned a very important lesson. I was at a family auction in the small quiet town of Ames, Oklahoma. The dew was still wet on the ground and the air was crisp. There was a lot of my extended family there as well as people I had never met. I got to see my cousin Taylor as well as one of her cousins named Jadey. We decided we were going to go ride four wheelers out in the field and it was at that time I learned a valuable lesson. Four wheeler accidents happen often, but I never expected to be the one involved. Before my accident I thought four wheelers were fairly safe, but afterwards I learned that an accident can happen in a split second and you should never assume you won’t be the one involved.
Transitioning from the teen years to adulthood and two near death experiences has allowed me to establish a spiritual relationship with God. The first experience occurred when driving on a country roads with deep curbs don’t remember what happen but my car somehow flipped on one side in a ditch and
huh dad” But then finally we slammed it down and it clicked or so we thought. We shot off at lightning speed looking at the trees and all the people below us zigzagging this way and that flipping and having a ball when all the sudden it slowed to a halt and as we slowly started to rise up. And with us in the front middle i knew, my dad knew, my heart knew, everyone on the roller coaster knew, and even the rollercoaster knew, that we were going down and as we raised our hands to scream my mind said “Houston we have a problem”. oh my gosh the metal bar just went up and as my heart lurched up so did I because I was starting to rise out the seat “Dad!!!”
The car shook and creaked as a motor took us up. For a few seconds, we were at the top. I looked around at the park, but then the car dropped and my stomach went with it. All I could remember from the rest of the ride was my first loop and the adrenaline pumping through my body. When I got off, I was dizzy but I yelled, “THAT WAS AWESOME!” My friends giggled as we walked to our next ride.
Have you ever walked down that white tile floor that reeked of bleach, with a bouquet of roses and daisies, all tied into one? Well, I have. My brother was in a small hospital room for a little over a week, trying to recover from a car accident with a minor concussion. I remember standing close by my dad as we went into the huge elevator filled with people. I slowly made my way to the far right corner and waited till our stop. As the elevator ringed, we snuck out of the crowd of people and turned the corner. I knocked on the door. The door slowly squeaked opened with a nurse on the other end. I look over to the bed; my brother had needles and wires stuck into him like a pincushion. But yet, he still managed to get some sleep. I set the box of chocolates on the table beside him, and then set my own self onto the small, unpleasing couch. Trying to get comfortable, I
Once Brody arrived, he instantly wanted to get his safety belt. However, for this session, I decided to go without it. He was hesitant at first, but once he was in and the activities began, he did not even notice. He asked a few times for his blue belt, and I would reply with, “You don’t need that anymore’. He responded back instantly with, “Yeah, no more blue”. This is already a great start to getting him away from the belt, as he is realizing to himself that he can go without it. We began by taking laps side to side using the larger dumbbell. I was able to notice that he improved his kicking from the week before, and was also moving quicker. About 10 minutes through, we decided to use the flippers to help assist him with his kicking. With
It happened when I was young. I was outside at my friend’s house sledding. We were taking a break when I got that phone call from my mom; she was crying. My sister was on her way to the emergency room. I started sprinting through the neighborhood towards my house. My dad was waiting with my brother in the car. My mom went with my sister in the ambulance. I was so scared that I was going to lose my sister. We got to the hospital and we were in the waiting room. It felt like days before we heard about her condition. My sister had pneumonia and mixed with her asthma she was having a hard time breathing. She had a severe attack and couldn’t breathe. If the crew from the ambulance didn’t show up the doctor said she wouldn’t have made it. I know
I heard myself scream. Crash. Glass from the back window flies forward in slow motion, it looked like snow. Jolted forward, I hit my head and
We have all heard the excuses before, "It's uncomfortable, I'm only going around the corner", I'd rather be thrown out of a car than be stuck in a seatbelt," and my favorite, "I'm a good driver I don't need to wear one." Well you may be a good driver but there are situations beyond your control such as bad weather, road conditions and not to mention other drivers that can affect your safety. Seat belts can mean the difference between life and death in an auto accident. Wearing a seat belt every time you enter a vehicle is not only the smart thing to do it is the right thing because it saves lives, it's the law and it will save you money.
The Guelph Police Service wish to remind motorists that it only takes about 5 seconds to buckle up which can save lives. There are drivers who still opt not to buckle up, or don’t require a passenger to buckle up, while on the road. Starting October 1st, 2016, members of the Guelph Police will be cracking down on drivers, and passengers, who are not properly secured in their vehicle.
