There have been two major opportunities that have shaped and impacted me: serving with Calvary Kids Care and watching a girl’s cabin on Thursday nights at Camp Brookwoods and Deer Run. I started volunteering with Calvary Kids Care my freshman year in high school. The first time that I ever held a baby, I was terrified. I had no idea if I was holding her correctly, or if I looked as uncomfortable on the outside as I felt on the inside. The little ball of life that I held in my hands kept trying to snuggle closer, but I held the baby away from me, afraid that I would crush it if I let it get too close. This first experience led to many, and thus my partnership with Calvary Kids Care was formed. I started to work with the kids, mainly newborns
Living in a strongly religious community, I was given many opportunities to provide service to fellow church members and also under privileged youth of the community. When I began high school I was given the opportunity to become a counselor during Vacation Bible School and
Earlier this year I left for a 3-month mission trip to Swaziland, Africa. While I was there one of my leaders asked if anyone wanted to help out in the preschool. My hand shot right up! I had some experience with preschool
When thinking about what career I wanted to pursue, I knew that I wanted to work with children and be able to make a difference in their lives. Volunteering has been a passion of mine since I was young, and as I have grown up I came to the realization that the opportunities I have enjoyed the most and felt that I made
On December 2nd of 2015, my city of San Bernardino encountered a terrorist attack that took the lives of 14 innocent people and injured 22 at the Inland Regional Center. I can only imagine what it feels like to lose someone whose only intentions were to go to work. This devastated many families and took away their loved ones. Seeing the pain and heartbreak, I knew that there was something that needed to be done. After seeing the chaos go on in my city, I decided to volunteer at my local Salvation Army to do something good in the middle of all this negativity. I donated clothes my family no longer used, blankets, and even pillows for those who couldn't afford them. I also volunteered to serve lunch on the weekends. Seeing their faces knowing
Throughout High School I have participated in numerous activities and clubs, but two clubs in particular surely stand out to me. DECA is a business club offered at DHS that has allowed me to development my leadership and presentation skills. My project this year pertained to drone photography for real estate agents, and anyone who I talked to could recognize the excitement in my eyes. National Honor Society is another club that is surely demanding, especially as an officer, but is extremely rewarding. During our final monthly meeting, I gave an overview of everything we have accomplished in the year, and the list accumulated was surely impressive. Each item on that list elicited memories that were truly rewarding. Through my personal community service experiences however, I have recently been volunteering at St. John the Baptist School, an elementary school in
I was taught that if you wanted anything, plan, peruse, do your best, never quit, and only then will you achieve your goals. My parents have been that example because of where they came from and the hardship they have gone through. This has molded me into the woman I am becoming to face my fears, grab the wheel, and steer my life into what I want it to be. I’ve always enjoyed helping other people from my many years in volunteering with Red Cross to giving my time to an elderly home. Working with Red Cross I was always put in the mother baby unit, seeing the new infants and getting to see the nurses having fun with their jobs I decided to pick a career I enjoy. Volunteering at a elderly made me realize how much I took pleasure in taking care of other peoples’ family members while they were away.
On 11/05/2017 I went with my three children to Calvary Baptist Church which is about 2 miles from my house. At 10:00 am we reached at the church and parked at the church’s parking lot. The church was planted in 1878. As we entered inside the church building ushers welcomed us. We sat in the third row and started fellowship. Most of the people in the congregation were African Americans of different ages.
I have volunteered 2 times over the years, once at Hope mission and once with the Victory Christian Centre. At hope missions I helped cut different veggies for the meal later in the day, plated food, served trays to people, swept and cleaned tables and trays after the meal was finished, and had small conversations with different people. During my time there I learned sorting skills, working under pressure, time management, and overcoming problems.
From 2013 until 2015, I volunteered at Country Manor Nursing Home in Sartell. It was a wonderful experience that allowed me to meet a lot of people. I began volunteering because I had free time during the summer of 2013, and I continued to keep going because I enjoyed it so much.
One of the greatest volunteering opportunities I have ever been a part of is teaching children about the environment. Speaking to a classroom full of children about the importance of our environment is an experience I will always remember. Being around young minds and helping these children grow into more caring humans is something I will always cherish.
When I started Volunteering at a homeless shelter 10 years ago, I was working as a medical assistant at a clinic. After I had trained for some months at the shelter. I was asked to help with the half-way house part. This had been set up for young people who wanted to get off drugs and alcohol, and change their life around. I helped set up and run a full-time program with daily classes, activities, and community
While I am very proud of my research in high energy particle physics, my work with underprivileged children in Malden, Massachusetts is something I am far more proud of. The children I work with come from a very unstable household, many of them come from houses where spousal abuse is frequent. Furthermore, a lot of these children come from a family with severe financial issues. Every Thursday I tutor one of the children, although many of them are self sufficient and highly capable students, there are a few that struggle with their work and learning.
Everyone wants to be something when they grow up, and there are millions of professions to choose from. During my four long years of high school, I have learned and experienced many things in and out of the classroom. Some of it helped me decide what profession I wanted to pursue when I graduated, but I mostly got the idea when I was eleven years old and my sister had her triplets that were born premature. I want to have a job that gives back to the community, that involves children and infants.
For my volunteer experience I chose to volunteer at the Boys and Girls Club in Shelby. There I was able to experience first hand, child development and how so many factors can impact a child’s life. Through this experience I was able to nurture my love for children and understand why I chose this volunteer experience. Throughout I will explain what I did there and how I have changed because of this experience.
With this new passion in mind, I joined the Big Brothers Big Sisters program at the end of my junior year. I was looking for an opportunity to inspire myself and also shed some light into another child’s eyes. Big Brothers Big Sisters really stuck out to me because their mission statement reads, “Provide children facing adversity with strong and enduring, professionally supported one-to-one relationships that change their lives for the better, forever”. That is exactly the kind of opportunity that I was looking for, it was just what I needed to not only help myself, but also someone else along the way. Big Brothers Big Sisters paired me with a little girl in sixth grade at my old elementary school that I meet up with every Thursday. Because of this, Thursday afternoon has become my favorite part of the week. Every time I see her it makes every problem
