Personal Narrative: Zach's Journey

Decent Essays

The moment came where it was time to hang up the old blue and white jersey and kiss it goodbye. Although another season was to follow, parting with your previous one is always an emotional affair, especially when you know you will never play another game on the home court where you spent three years of your life. Where Zach spent his days over the course of his high school career, where he grinded for hours on a daily basis, was now home to a new set of kids who shared the same dream he had. The only difference is, he was now a step ahead and a new burden was placed on him. They would play the same games he played. Run the same court he ran. Follow the same dream he had. Yet, only the best of the best would go far enough to be drafted, and …show more content…

They had let go of coach Ben Howland, and looked to assign a new man to run the team. Zach was a fan of Howland and was slightly let down with his dismissal. Yet, he still saw the school as the one he would love to attend. "I was really disappointed," said LaVine. "I had a good relationship with (Howland) and his staff. They know my game and I was really looking forward to going in there and helping them. I wish them the best. It's tough because I want to stay at UCLA; I really didn't have a second choice in my recruitment. We'll just have to see what happens. I'll have to see who they hire." Although he was short of the starting lineup, that didn’t hold him back from giving it his all. His position didn’t bother him much either as he once told post-game interviewers, “It is what it is. Coach wants me to come off the bench and be a spark with Bryce (Alford) and I’m accepting my role right now. Coming off the bench, we’re just some of the most exciting players in the country right now. Everyone’s talking about the UCLA freshman.” He knew that as a freshman, he had many to impress and that as a Bruin, he had big shoes to fill. Russell Westbrook, point guard for the Oklahoma City Thunder, is a former UCLA player who Zach models his game after. Westbrook is known for his dunking abilities and explosive gameplay, and as the new kid on the block, LaVine set out to take the crown. Having earned the nickname “Eastbay King” during his high school days, he was looking for another occasion to be crowned king. It wouldn’t be an easy process but there was one thing that Zach was sure of - a first impression lasts
