Social work is a profession for those with a strong desire to help improve people's lives. Social workers help people function the best way they can in their environment, deal with their relationships, and solve personal and family problems. Social workers often see clients who face a life-threatening disease or a social problem. These problems may include inadequate housing, unemployment, serious illness, disability, or substance abuse. Social workers also assist families that have serious domestic conflicts, including those involving child or spousal abuse. Social workers often provide social services in health-related settings that now are governed by managed care organizations. To contain costs, these organizations are emphasizing …show more content…
There I noticed the great lengths these social workers went through to help people like ourselves that were in need. Our social worker helped us obtain benefits like medical insurance, food stamps, even a monthly stipend. She even helped my mother by giving her the opportunity to go to a vocational school and then to get job training and lastly help her find a job. That's when I turned to my mother and said to my mom when I grow up I want to become a professional that dedicates their lives to help other people in need and that I would be looked upon as someone they can talk to that they can trust. As a child I took the initiative and started volunteering at the "Liga Contra el Cancer Foundation" which helped cancer patients that were needy. I was a "cangrejito" at first collecting money at local streets and selling chocolates door to door. Then as I got older I was part of the "Juniors Club" which supervised the cangrejitos at the local streets and organized all mailings for donations being made by callers. We sent the donors a thank you card for contributing to our organization and helping the cancer patients. At Thanksgiving we helped the homeless by providing them food and shelter. During Christmas time we would gift wrap at local malls to raise money. I became a volunteer for this foundation because my cousin was diagnosed with cancer, this foundation helped raise money for him when my aunt and uncle could no longer afford the
Ever since I can remember, I have had the intense desire to help people. In high school, I joined Kiwanis Key Club and National Honors Society; both organizations allowed me to gain hours of volunteer experience helping families in need within my own community. Both organizations have annual events to benefit our community. At Christmas, Key Club adopts a few families and we buy clothing and toys for the kids. Our efforts to make the holidays a more enjoyable time for the families removed the parents’ burden of having to worry about being able to pay bills after getting presents for their children. Also, National Honors Society holds a blood drive every year in coalition with the American Red Cross. Last year our blood drive was in honor of a little girl in our community with leukemia.
I began volunteering at a non-profit organization in Burbank, Burbank Temporary Aid Center (BTAC). This organization focuses on assisting homeless and low-income individuals and families. They provide various services:
Social workers form relationships with people an assist them to live more successfully within their local communities by helping them find solutions to their problems. Social work involves engaging not only with clients but their friends and families. Social workers also work closely with organisations such as the police, local authority departments,
I raised money for scholarships to camp; helping hundreds of kids come to camp that would be unable to afford it otherwise. Development of a diverse staff was important to me. So I recruited, interviewed and hired central city staff to be part of camp. This involved going to their neighborhood for interviews because they had no means of getting to camp.
The National Honor Society has gave me the opportunity to help others in ways that I could not have done on my own. I have had the opportunity to help many in our community with our multiple different community service projects. Last year we sold raffle tickets for a gift card basket. All of the money that we earned went to a family in our community who had been through devastating house fire. They lost not only there house but all of their personal belongings too. The fact that we have the opportunity to help those around us makes the service projects seem even more meaningful. We also took up donations of paper products to give to the Ronald McDonald House. The Ronald McDonald House is a place where families can stay while they have a child at the Ruby Memorial Hospital. They can stay there for as long as
Throughout High School, I led multiple philanthropic projects. As president of the Ignite Organization, I involved students to raise funds for, and volunteer at a pregnancy center. I assembled a team of volunteers, and initiated fundraisers. This effort transpired over a year and continues to affect my community. I also developed a supply-drive to assist Hurricane Sandy victims through benefit events. Furthermore, I volunteered at summer camps as well as at my Parish as a counselor.
In some cases, social workers do not normally work in the housing agencies themselves, however, social workers play a role in referring those in low-income or in poverty to Housing agencies (Mizrahi & Davis, 2011). Social workers will often refer individuals to apply for housing or section 8 programs. Social workers can often be found in cases of those who are living in housing: such as CPS cases, micro mental health, and case management. Social workers also play a big role in finding appropriate homes for individuals such as: the elderly, and the
After finding the main office and meeting the Volunteer Coordinator , I was led to the area where I would be spending my time volunteering. The employees in the donations area greeted me and directed me right away as to how I could help. All of the employees seemed to enjoy their work and appeared laid back and relaxed, and I am sure it feels good to know they are getting a paycheck, but also, they are enriching the lives of many people in need in their own
Social workers work with individuals and families to help improve outcomes in their lives. This may be helping to protect vulnerable people from harm or abuse or supporting people to live independently. Social workers support people, act as advocates and direct people to the services they may require. Social workers often work in multi-disciplinary teams alongside health and education professionals.
the organization i chose to give a large donation to is Milwaukee Collegiate Academy. Milwaukee Collegiate Academy also known as M.C.A is a high school that is dedicated to sending scholars to and through college. M.C.A deserves a large donation because for the past 4 years they have had 100% college accecpantce rate also this year they had a 100% university accapentces
One of the most successful fundraisers I have been part of was the Big Hat Half Marathon in Clovis. The profits made by the volunteers and sponsors were able to raise revenue for a local animal shelter. Many runners greeted the volunteers with smiles and gave thanks. I was delighted by being surrounded by motivational and gracious individuals. As part of Animal Club, I am glad that it is able to help
However, social work is more than helping people with family problems or financial situations. Social work can also include working with people for their citizen’s rights; helping children with social or psychological problems at school; organizing, developing, planning, and administrating social actions to improve conditions; etc.
A social worker is a profession design to assist the needs of the people. A social worker is devoted to not only look at the individual’s points of view but also at the society as a whole, they also perceive individual’s psychological perspective as well as political. The points of views mention above are broad topics of what a social worker could possibly focus on. A social worker can become very specific within the field they want to study it all depends on the individuals interest. You could narrow it down to working with families or youth and from that you could narrow it down even more to working for instance with youth who’s family suffer from drug abuse and therefore their children are forced to be sent to foster homes.
