Personal Educational Philosophy It is my belief that, through education, an individual will receive the skills and tools that are necessary to build a life that is successful and prosperous. I believe that, as teachers, it is our responsibility to ensure that learning takes place in a safe, open, and supportive environment. This will assist students to learn the important aspects of developing and fostering positive relationships with others. It is my desire, as a educator, to help students meet their fullest potential by providing an environment that is secure, supports risk-taking, and stimulates students to share ideas. My role is to guide students and to provide access to information rather than acting as the primary source of information. The students will obtain greater knowledge when they search to find their own answers to their questions. Within an education setting, students should be continually encouraged to solve problems like those they will encounter outside of school. This instills in them the skills necessary to become flexible problem solvers in preparation for their adult lives. For students to construct knowledge, they need the opportunity to discover for themselves and practice skills in authentic situations. Providing students access to hands-on activities and allowing adequate time and space to use materials that reinforce the lesson being studied creates an opportunity for individual discovery and construction of knowledge to occur. My teaching
Teaching is a lifelong learning process. It involves the learning of new strategies, philosophies, and methods. I can learn from colleagues, parents, classes, and from the students themselves. I want my students to take responsibility for their learning. I want to give them the tools to help become successful in their life. I think it is my responsibility to provide an educational environment that is encouraging and positive.
Constructivism. I believe that learning situated in physical and social contexts. Children learn by doing, by solving problems and by communicating with people around them. Constructivism maintains that children think differently and will interpret and construct the world in different ways (Maloy, 2015). Thereby, learning occurs when children are given chances to experience and interpret the world around them in their own ways. Providing children with opportunities to engage in authentic activities is essential in their cognitive development (McDevitt et al, 2013). Authentic activities include a wide range of hands-in practices such as building a bridge by blocks and experiences to build up concept learning such as visits to libraries, banks and museums. When children are playing around with concrete objects like rods, wood blocks and clay, they manipulate, act, touch, see and feel things. In this process, children learn about colors, shapes and textures as well as practicing their fine motor skills. Moreover, Gage and Berliner (1998, as cited in Marsh, Clarke & Pittaway, 2015a) argued that children who have not been giving chances to manipulate concrete objects might find it challenging to understand addition, subtraction, multiplication and division.
My philosophy of education is that every student gets an equal opportunity to learn in a safe, comfortable and fostering environment. As I reflect on my teaching and learning principles, I realize that my mission as a teacher is based on the following thoughts: to enhance positive learning, provide equal opportunity to learning to assist closing the education gap and to use evidence based teaching strategies to present concepts in various modalities.
Dictionaries define education as the act of imparting and acquiring knowledge where the powers of reasoning and judgement is developed in preparing oneself intellectually to face life. To most of us, education is commonly perceived in a narrower sense where one has to obtain outstanding academic qualification to gain success. However, I am of the opinion that education also encompases life-long experiences, knowledge and wisdom that an individual acquires at different stages of life.
Will there ever be a perfect way to teach or learn when obtaining an education? Will anyone ever find the perfect teaching or learning method that will suit every human being in the universe? Have you ever asked yourself what education means, what it stands for and what purpose does it serve the human nation? Does everybody have the same philosophy when it comes to education? As far as I’m concern, everyone is different, not everybody will have the same mindset. To me, education means so much more than what it traditionally states in the books, internet and dictionaries. To many, education simply means gaining knowledge in schools the old fashion way which is through textbooks taught by teachers. Supplementary to that, society have
Dictionary defines ‘Philosophy’ as ‘love of wisdom’. It is made up of two Greek words, philo, meaning love, and sophos meaning wisdom.
Teaching, or empowering young minds is a task that cannot be taken lightly. It is full of challenges, frustrations, and responsibilities. However, it is a task that is also full of adventure, wonder, and gratification. I strongly believe that all children are capable of learning, if they have the proper motivation and direction from their teachers. All students deserve my time and full attention in regards to their education. One must create a classroom that is a safe learning environment for all. If students do not feel safe in my classroom, whether it is emotionally, physically, or socially, their defense systems will go up and learning will greatly decrease, if not shut down all together. It is important to me that my students, as well as their parents, other teachers, administrators, and people in the community, see me as someone they can approach, who will be fair and nondiscriminatory
To be a teacher, it takes a special type of person. I do not believe that just anyone can become a teacher. When making the decision to become an educator, it says something about who you are as a person. It gives you a firm reassurance that you are influencing and changing the lives of our future leaders, police officers, doctors, etc. A teacher is a friend, a listening ear, a shoulder to cry on, as well as a parent at times. To be a great teacher, you must possess the following traits and be able to perform the following actions needed to successfully shape the lives of your students: Professionalism, curriculum, teaching methods, classroom management, and assessment.
It is important to be aware of students with exceptionalities, students from diverse cultures, religions, and backgrounds etc. As a future educator, I would make sure all my activities are inclusive to all students e.g., race, ethnicity, sex, physical ability, culture, language, gender, background etc. I would also make sure I support the achievement for all my students, ensuring that students backgrounds and circumstances do not stop them from achieving full benefits. As an educator I will apply what I learned in this course into my teaching practice. Therefore, my hopes and dreams as an educator is to make sure I fulfill all curriculum requirements, but I also teach students the critical skills they need.
Being an educator is definitely something I have always known I wanted to pursue. Although I have had other thoughts in mind, such as being a performer or professional athlete, teaching is something that I have always seemed to go back to. When I was in Kindergarten, my oldest brother was diagnosed with Cancer. I was only five years old at the time, so I did not really have a strong understanding of what was happening. All I knew was that my brother was really sick and I was scared. However, through all of the hospitalization, doctor visits, checkups and treatments, my teacher never left my family’s side. She always made it a point to see how we were doing and see if there was anything either she or the school could do for us. I remember she especially tried her best to make me feel comfortable at school and take my mind off of what was going on. And at that time, I knew that if one person could have such a big impact on me the way my teacher did, then I wanted to do that for someone too.
I myself have a very positive outlook on life. I am very determined, dedicated, and
I believe the role of school in society is to teach children the knowledge they need to be successful in life. I believe this knowledge includes not only academic skills, but also emotional skills, such as citizenship, responsibility, and manners. I believe that students applying these academic and emotional skills in their lives is the purpose of education. Using this knowledge gained in school will prepare students to become responsible, productive citizens. I teach six and seven-year-old students in my first-grade classroom. I believe that beginning this education at such an early age gives students the opportunity to build these skills and values into a way of life. It is also the responsibility of schools to assure that all students are served well. I believe that the most important way a school can accomplish this is by making sure each child is receiving their education in their least restrictive environment. Not every student is served best in a regular education classroom. For some, their least restrictive environment is in a special education classroom, an alternative learning classroom, or even in remediation small groups. It is up to the schools to determine the correct learning environment, and work with the students’ parents to ensure they receive the best education possible.
I was a student from the technical side and till now Design and Technology has remained my favourite and high scoring subject. The subject being easy is not enough for me to justify this interest. I believe one possible answer is the approach of my Design and Technology teachers toward teaching was completely different from other teachers. This had been possible only through their scaffolding work they have been continually constructing in transforming me into a better individual. They were engaged and concerned about the future of their students. They were my role models. Since my childhood, I have practiced scoutism and I was dedicated in participating in a social activities. I always wanted to choose a career where I will able to appreciate in what I am practising and be able to create interaction with people. The only possible career to match my expectation was obviously teaching. However teaching is very challenging and requires lots of dedication. As a teacher to become, I believe all individual engaging in the field of teaching must have their own teaching philosophy and an understanding of
All students are unique individuals, who have their own way of learning. Some students, might find it easier to learn from hands-on work rather than reading materials. Others, may be capable of learning with just reading content. Since every student learns differently, I believe there isn’t just one philosophical way of how students should be taught. I would incorporate a couple different philosophies and teaching mechanisms into my classroom. I also believe that the environment a child is in impacts the way they learn. Students should have a set of rules to follow, but also be able to express what they think and feel just as well.
I believe that through education a person can get the vital skills and tools that are necessary for the person to build a life that is successful and prosperous. In education, the learners make good use of what they learn in the classroom and help students solve their problems outside of the classroom which relates to progressivism. Progressivism is when students are challenged to discover or construct knowledge about the environment (Powell, S.D, (2009), PG. 276). These are the skills that the children need in to order to solve their daily problems and to also prepare them for their daily lives. We as teachers need to make sure that learning takes place in a clean, safe and supportive environment, and that students learn the aspects that they need to develop positive attitudes and respect. There are three elements that I
