Tomorrow, tomorrow was my moto for achieving my goals before I joined this class. However, once I joined the class and begun to evaluate my lifestyle I realized I needed a major change. First information I learned were the three keys for psychological skills interventions; be ready to change, assume responsibility and believe in yourself. Before, I even begun this class I was ready to change my sedentary lifestyle however, I didn’t know where to begin, I had no vision. My lifestyle had caused distaste towards my body and left me feeling physically and mentally unhealthy. My second step was that I was responsible for allowing myself to live in damaging lifestyle. A change had to be made, I began by believing that I could change my sedentary lifestyle into one of fitness. Then I identified my process goal of running one or two miles every other day. Eventually increasing to two or three miles during October and November. My second process goal was to assess my mile time after every month. Finally, my performance goal was to reduce my mile time by four minutes with an ultimate goal of running a mile in under eight minutes.
In the beginning of August, I ran my first mile time under 11 minutes. Then, I begun to implement my process goal of running one to two miles. I noticed that in the beginning I had confidence in myself and was highly motivated. However, as the semester became busy I started feeling overwhelmed and slacking. I realized that my environment was affecting my
The essay demonstrates your ability to write clearly and concisely on a selected topic and helps you distinguish yourself in your own voice. What do you want the readers of your application to know about you apart from courses, grades, and test scores? Choose the option that best helps you answer that question and write an essay of no more than 650 words, using the prompt to inspire and structure your response. Remember: 650 words is your limit, not your goal. Use the full range if you need it, but don't feel obligated to do so. (The application won't accept a response shorter than 250 words.)
After a class discussion about making working out more creative, I made a change in my plan. Rather than doing the same workout each week, I decided to adjust my new behavior to three or more 30-60 minute workouts with a cardio element. The second phase of this experience was faced with challenges, but the update in my plan was helpful. The fourth week I still did not meet my goal, but I did complete one run and another cardio workout. Having my sponsor checking up on me was what helped me over this lag, I did not like telling her I was failing, so her accountability encouraged me to do better going forward. I also begin incorporating friends into my workouts. By the fifth week I was recommitted. I worked out well over thirty minutes three times, two of which were with friends. This week was positive for me, as it showed me that working out could be fun. I believe this shift in thinking was the most valuable lesson during this experience. I needed this new way of thinking because in high school I only ran because I belonged to the cross country and track teams. I felt pressure form my teammates, coaches, parents, and myself to workout. Although it was fun at times, I was doing it because I felt I had to. Now that I am in college, nobody tells me to workout and I am accountable to nobody but myself. Realizing working out can be fun, and adding in my friends, is what propelled my last three weeks. I successfully met my
The goal I choose to follow over the last two months was to have some form of organized exercise a day, whether it be running, basketball, or lifting weights. When I first made the plan, it was to run every morning at 11am and then again at 9pm, and any other exercise that happened to cross my way that day I would also include. However, by then end of my trip I found my plan had changed much from what it started as out. To help with the work of accomplishing this goal, I used two useful tools I had that I thought would make it easier. Firstly, I had my parents send me a text every morning to make sure I was awake and working out, or at least putting in some kind of effort to do something. Second, whenever I went running I brought along my roommate
Before I came to college I was very physically fit; I used to run anywhere from five to eight miles or more almost every day. While I was running regularly I was also very conscious of what I ate and how many miles I was running every day and I took my physical health very seriously. I stopped running when I got to Toledo my freshmen year with plenty of excuses and I never started up again. The goal for my behavior change project is to increase the amount of physical activity I do daily, specifically running and weight training exercises, for the next four weeks. I plan to track this by keeping a journal with notes of the activity I did each
Overall, I believe I successfully completed my behavior change, prior to this assignment I had only went on runs occasionally but with determination I have made physical activity a priority at least three times a week. I believe my biggest accomplishment from this project was
Personally i now have kept up with the jogging and can now jog up to forty five somtimes fifty minutes somthime i could not have sceen myslef doing five years ago before i started working out and taking exercise seriously. Completing this i feel more confident in myslef and only see it improving the more i exercise.During the course of this assigement my spouse Samantha was my support person who was extremly helpful when it came to keeping me on track and making sure i stick with it to the end. There was times when i would get frustrated and she seemd to be able to take my mind of the problem so i could complete my goal. One thing i found was missing was communicating with other class mates to see how there progress was coming along. Which can also help motvaite people in achiving there goals this could have been improved by me personally being invlved in the group facebook page and communcating with peers more on this challenge to get feed back and mabe even constructive information that could have helped me along the process. In the end i found this challange was a great assigement to get people more invloed in their own health and to take action of healthy
I consider myself someone who values the question “why?”. My entire life I have caught myself questioning things that others never really seemed to care to think about, about a multitude of subjects. Specifically, asking those close to me like my parents, siblings, friends, and now my husband. Leaning this semester about Psychology has been very interesting to me because it had helped me understand the “why” behind the way the brain works. In this class, Lifespan Growth and Development, I have learned about concepts that I will be able to carry with me throughout my college education, my professional career, my marriage, and my eventual parenthood as a mother.
This semester has been filled with informative information when speaking about our own social skill, but also other people’s social psychology as well, thus is why it will be very useful in future. Throughout the semester we studied everything from the introduction of social psychology, social influences, aggression in psychology, and interpersonal attraction and close relationships. A lot of the knowledge that I gained was not only from the “Social Psychology” textbook, but also in the videos and the reactions that we needed to come up with on a weekly basis. I like the idea of being able to watch the video to see if the experiment was successful or unsuccessful and commenting on it by giving my opinion if I agreed or not. For me,
Growing up I became accustomed to being in academic environments that were heavily populated by minorities. Due to this I was constantly surrounded by people who shared similar backgrounds and experiences as me. When I began my studies at the University of Maryland it was a completely different atmosphere. Coming into an environment where I was no longer surrounded by minorities made me feel out of place. Often times I would ask myself if this was the right place for me, but then I would remind myself that my hard work and dedication got me there. Still, I would have my doubts. During my second semester (Spring 2017) I met a couple of girls on campus who were members of SIA. As I began to talk to them more I quickly noticed their strong work ethic and all of their achievements. Meeting them helped me stop feeling out of place at school as I was able to meet more people with similar ethnic backgrounds as me. I admired their interest in creating a community of Latina empowerment. This is one of the reasons I became interested in joining SIA. Being in a place where the issues minorities face are often ignored makes it even more important to have organizations that focus on giving people the support system much needed in college. Another reason I became interested in SIA was through their events on campus. Members are constantly organizing events on many topic such as domestic violence and environmental racism. These events were interesting to me because they were on topics that aren’t often talked about. For example, when I saw flyers about their environmental racism event I became interested in doing my own research on these topics. Events like these are important because they help educate people on topics that are often overlooked. This made me excited to join SIA and be able to contribute to this.
Throughout my 5 years of college and high school in the U.S, this is the first psychology class that I have taken. This class has helped me understand concepts of the human mind, such as intelligence, problem solving, and differing personalities. These lectures are supported by various scientists and psychologists, and are relevant to real life circumstances. However, the most valuable lesson I have learned in this class is motivation.
Dr. Paul Farmer once said, “That’s when I feel most alive, when I’m helping people.” And that could not be truer for myself. I am fascinated and committed to improving the health of medically underserved regions spanning from my home within Appalachia and far beyond to international borders. Today as I write this, I triaged over 100 patients alongside nurses and medical students in the Dominican Republic; further learning what it truly means to become adaptable and use inter-disciplinary strength. Each member of our team in the Dominican Republic brought with us unique backgrounds, all of which combined to positively impact the lives of our patients in need. As an experienced EMT and emergency room medical scribe, I offered my knowledge of
At the beginning of the semester I knew very little about Psychology. I thought that Psychology only had to deal with the brain and how it works. Well I was totally wrong, by the end of the semester I learned about so much more than the brain. I was very interested and excited to learn about this subject because I knew that it was a very broad and exciting topic to cover. In this paper I’m going to write about a few of my favorite things we have learned about this year, and those are personality, memory, and psychological disorders.
After taking a psychology class, I learned about how to manage your life more carefully. This is because psychology consist of memory, stress, problem solving, sleep, and how the brain develops and manages the body system. Psychology increased my motivational level when approaching a task and guided with helpful tips to build on my existing knowledge. I set my goals clear so that they are directly related to the task that I need to accomplish and after I accomplish those goals, I reward myself for the job well done. Psychology applies to my everyday life now because I focus my attention on the material that I am studying. Attention is one of the major components of memory. I learned that in order to change from short-term to long-term, I will need to actively attend to this information. Psychology increased my self-understanding and insight in life. Because I took a psychology course, I learned that psychological assessments gave me a better knowledge of myself and understand my true self.
Over the semester, I have learned many new important concepts within psychology. Psychology is important because it is significant for one to know how individuals operate and the factors that lead to certain behaviors among our peers and within ourselves. Out of all of the topics I have learned, there are three topics that are prominent, which includes confidentiality as it pertains to research, substance dependence, and Mnemonics/study techniques.
From the test, I realized I have a strong personality in agreeableness and sociability. Before the test, I did not realize that I had this strength and, therefore, it was underutilized. The sociability aspect will create better working relations with fellow students during the class group discussion and with the coworker, this will be extended in the future career. Additionally, I realized I have low emotional stability. This means I handle the situation based on the emotion and I am easily overpowered by emotion when making decisions (Phillipy, 2010).
