This reflective assignment will focus on one of the 6C’s related to nursing practice, personal experiences and how I have improved in confidence and gained further development in the different fields of nursing as my role of a student nurse. Jane Cummings introduced the 6C’s values as care, courage, compassion, competence, communication, courage and commitment. These are an implementation of the vision and strategy for Nurses, Midwives and Care staff, set out in the national nursing strategy (Department of Health 2012). The 6C’s came into practice in 2012 as part of England’s national nursing strategy, however there have been mixed responses, as to whether the 6C’s have actually focused on nursing care or an individual’s nurses ability to provide good quality patient care (Merrifield, 2015). Nursing students have progression points to develop their skills and behaviour, these standards are set by The Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC). The essential skills cluster help nursing students achieve relevant stages of skills for each year of their training, including the medicine management skill. As a second year nursing student I have reached the progression point to show I can demonstrate I have knowledge of basic medication calculations, safe storage of medicines and controlled drugs, legal and ethical frameworks and symptom management (NMC, 2010). Competence will be discussed as it is, a lifelong skill and beneficial to students and registered nurses to be competent
The NHS have 6 core nursing values, launched by England’s chief nursing officer, Jane Cummings, after the Mid-Staffordshire disaster. These 6C’s were put into place to reinforce holistic nursing (Delves-Yates, C. 2015), ensure that everybody within the National Health Service is doing everything possible to ensure the best possible service for the patients, and to ensure that patients were put at the heart of everything healthcare professionals do (Watterson, L. 2013). The 6 C’s include care, compassion, competence, commitment, courage and communication. All six of the 6C’S are all fundamental values when it comes to healthcare, however out of these six, the three that I have chosen to write about are communication, compassion and courage. I have chosen these three as I believe that they are the most imperative when it comes to delivering high-quality care for the patients or service users.
The nursing practise has continually evolved and can be described as autonomous due to the significant involvement of nurses in patient care. This then necessitates critical reflection as a way to continually develop and improve the nursing practise. The Gibbs' model, one of the reflection models, assists nurses in complying to the codes and guidelines of nursing practice. For example, developing action plans, evaluating patient outcomes, and thinking critically. This essay will describe an event involving nurses and explain the feelings it evoked. It will also provide an evaluation of the positives and negatives, analysis and enhancement of learning, and an action plan.

The objective of this reflection is to explore and reflect upon a situation from a clinical placement on an orthopedic unit. The incident showed that I did not provide safe, timely and competent care for my patient when the oxygen saturation was low. The Nurse of the Future Nursing Core Competencies (NOF Core Competencies) were selected to show the correlation of competency based education and practice partnership. This is being done nationwide so new student nurses would be more prepared with critical thinking and competent learned skills during clinicals. In today’s world, it is essential to incorporate nursing theory into practice. Patricia Benner, through her work, “has provided essential understanding of how knowledge and skills are acquired and directly applied to nursing practice, education, research and administration” (Altmann, 2007, p. 114). According to Benner’s model of skill acquisition, “the nurse passes through five stages of career development, novice, advanced beginner, competent, proficient and expert” (English, 1993, p.387). Specific patterns of behavior, thinking, and performance is present in each stage. The most experience is associated with the expert nurse and the least experience is possessed by the novice nurse (Benjamin, 2007). As I only have an Associate’s degree in Nursing, much of this information is unfamiliar to me. I have not been exposed to the contents of this course before and thus the reasons I would like to set a foundation of theories for professional nursing practice.
