Personal Statement: A Career In Cosmetology

Applying to college can be a daunting experience, particularly for one whose academic career was interrupted during high school. However, it was this interruption, and what followed, that has allowed me to set goals for myself, both academically and professionally. Having been in psychiatric hospitals and dealing with mental health conditions, I have witnessed firsthand how those with mental illnesses and emotional difficulties are among the most underserved in our society. My goal in life is to make a difference to someone that is struggling, much like I have. I plan to reach this goal by earning a degree in psychology, and pursuing a professional career as a mental health counselor.

“You haven't done so well with passing classes and that’s an issue, you have a decision to make, you can either stay at lakewood and not graduate on time, or you can move to an alternative school to make up the credits you need.” The words that no high school student want to hear. As a high school student, school was not my best interest. Yes, i can say that i was interested and determined to get done with my high school year and go to college and continue to persuade my dream in either becoming a cosmetologist or become in the culinary fields, but that didn’t go as planned. As the days go by everything becomes a challenge, School work gets harder along with the classes, also understanding everything that you learn even gets harder. Most people

There are a lot of steps in getting education and training for a career in Cosmetology. The minimum education level required for this career is postsecondary training. There is no such thing as maximum training in cosmetology because a person can keep training after receiving the credentials necessary to start a career in cosmetology. ‘Cosmetology programs generally grant certificates, diplomas or associate's degrees, rather than bachelor's degrees’ (Bachelor’s). All the education necessary is a high school diploma, cosmetology diploma, and a certificate or associate's degree program. The education needed for cosmetology can range anywhere from 9 months to 2 years. The minimal amount for this education in cosmetology is from $5,000 to $10,000. Before I graduated from high school, I devised a five year plan for myself. First, I would attend SUNY Albany to obtain a degree in business. Then, I would attend a cosmetology school, acquire the 1,000 hours needed to take my state board exams, take those exams to finally secure my cosmetology license. All of this would eventually lead to opening my own salon in the future. About a month before my graduation, an ambulance bolted my mom to the hospital.

Cosmetology is the general work on others hair and skin. The area of cosmetology I am going for is hair. I find working on other people’s hair fun and interesting. Makeup and nails are other areas of interest for me. I am going to be studying cosmetology to become licensed as an entrepreneur for hair, makeup, and helping to make the lives of others better. It is important to understand the education or training requirements, skills or training, salary and benefits offered, and the duties for a particular career when making this decision.

​Every since I was a child I have had a passion for doing other people’s hair. When I was little I would use my baby dolls as clients and work on their hair until it was perfect and neat. I have chosen to be in the cosmetology field because I like to help other people with their needs and wants as well as mine. I am aware that while working in this industry I will work with many different ethnic groups and many different hair types. I feel I can do anything as long as I have the determination to do so. Many people go to cosmetology school to work for someone else, but I would like to open up a mini-salon out of my own home someday.

The experienced cosmetologist with a strong clientele base has the best chance of success in a booth rental scenario. It’s a lot easier to set up and run your own business if you have a list of clients who will keep you afloat.

The relationship between Salon & Spa owners/ managers and a local Cosmetology School is very important. It also plays big role in public relations aspect of the business on both parties.

The Elkhart Area Career Center cosmetology class is a loud, crazy, girly group. They are all about makeup, hair, and YouTube. Mrs. Teagarden, the instructor is a medium eight, silver-white haired lady. The salon lab is an L shape room with fluorescent lights, walks half cream half green. Constant water running in the shampoo bowls, minty fresh tea-tree shampoo, and the buzz of a blow-dryer. U93 playing the same ten songs on repeat all four hours your there. That’s the cosmetology salon.

Many people wonder what is needed to become that successful good paid cosmetologist. Society sometimes think men are not suited for a cosmetology career; little do they know that is not true. A man who was not ashamed of the job which they called a woman’s job would be Paul Mitchell. In the cosmetology industry what is mainly needed is patience, which would be the best skill for this career. Cosmetologists do not only handle hair, but many more parts of the body. A career in cosmetology is based on professional skill or practice of beautifying the face, skin, and hair; therefore one needs to know the safety requirements in using many different chemicals, job description, salary, and benefits to work in this career.

“A cosmetologist is a beauty specialist who is educated in treating the hair, skin, and nails” (McKay). Some of the services that are required of a cosmetologist include but are not limited to: shampooing, hair, treating disorders, haircuts or trims, and styling hair (Chronicle Guidance Publications). Cosmetologists provide numerous services so that clients look and feel their best. They also choose and apply cosmetics that go well

A survey certified that average women spend about $13,000 on makeup in her life time. Not only that, but also spend 300 hours applying it. Beauty tends to increase the self esteem of women, they think more positive of themselves. Along with that like anything else cosmetology has revolutionized throughout the years. Cosmetology has played an important role in lives of women, it does not only represent beauty, but also self confidence.

Growing up I always use to like doing my hair, as well as my mothers and sisters hair. I began to do my own hair for school at the age of nine. About six months before I graduated high school, I participated in a fundraiser to support breast cancer /scholarship contest at Aveda Institute, which is a cosmetology school. I saw many creative and talented students at the event, it was amazing! I assumed it was a sign, so as soon as I graduated high school I registered at Aveda. I truly believed that cosmetology was what I wanted to make a career out of, because I enjoy making people feel more confident about their physical appearance. However, attending the institute emphatically demonstrated a sneak preview of what life had in store for me.

Getting into the cosmetology field has always been something I have been interested in. So for my passion project I wanted to “perfect” a balayage. Which is almost looks like an ombre, the difference is that we weave through your hair, so you see some highlights are up higher and the bottom half is all lighter. I did something similar to my friend's hair but with red instead. I got it down pretty fast and then she wanted a blonde balayage. For me to do this I need to understanding color choices,which mesh well with the color she has now, how fast does he hair take (how fast will the bleach show), last but not least is measurements.

The first spark of me wanting to be a doctor was when my dad bought a cheap stethoscope home for me to listen to hearts. Since then I have always been interested in biology. I would put that stethoscope on everything. My animals weren’t excluded from this, even the hamster. That one was a bit difficult. But when I aged my career interests jumped around for a little bit.
