Business administration is a field of study that is the polar opposite of what I am known for. My whole life I have been known for being the creative musical type, no one ever saw me on the path of business. My social skills were not great and neither were my math skills, but those were not necessarily important in singing and acting. My path changed when I was asked one question; if you could work in any environment what would it look like, and the rest is history. A nice chair, no movement, and air conditioning. With some quick google searches I found it, Business administration!
The person I chose to interview was Betsy Calhoun head of the business department. Before she was a teacher here at LR Betsy worked in billing in doctor’s offices and she did clerical work for banks, she worked at the vermont leadership center as an administrator and she helped organize the youth core. Now she teaches tech and computer apps and is our FBLA chapter advisor. She first got into business at twenty five when she came to the realization that she wanted to go back to school.
The first time I was exposed to a business like environment was when I joined FBLA. I joined FBLA or Future Business Leaders of America my junior year and immediately found that that I liked the business setting I was voted chapter secretary and volunteered to do all of the clerical work. Now I am chapter president and I have a swarm of Members looking to me to lead.
That is how I know Ms. Calhoun so organizing and setting up the interview was quite easy because I currently spend most of my time in her room working on projects for FBLA. I conducted the interview on our business trip to New York City.
Business Administration is, for the most part, a straightforward path with little to no turns. You need to have some math, technology, and leadership skills. The salary is forty to sixty thousand. The only issue I really encountered While researching this topic is that many people are debating whether business degrees are still the ideal choice or are they losing their relevance. When I asked Betsy the question what is your opinion on the growing thought that a business degree might lose its relevance (Best Value Schools). She replied with something
I interviewed Ashley Porras, a Licensed Vocational Nurse at Sharp Rees Stealy. She gave me background information of how she got into the healthcare system, great advice and what she does on a daily basis. The reason I chose Ashley as the person to interview was because I got the chance to spend the day with her at work and I loved it. I found it interesting what she did and got the opportunity to learn more about her, her occupation and where she see’s herself in the future. Someday, I would be an LVN and gradually get higher in the healthcare field like she is doing now.
I interviewed Durward “Durk” Lynch he is in my field of interest where I want to work as one day. He is a Nurse Practitioner at the Vanden Bosh Clinic and at the College Clinic. He gave information on his background and what drove him to be a Nurse Practitioner (NP). He really has had a lot of experience, as I will explain to you what he has shared.
I had the privilege to interview a member of the HR department at Liberty Diversified, International (LDI). LDI is a family of seven companies in different markets such as: custom packaging solutions (Harbor Packaging), retail solutions (Immedia), and office furnishings and solutions (Safco), to name a few. Being a freshman at the Carlson School I was really nervous about this assignment because I didn’t want to make a bad impression by interviewing someone I had no connections with. Thus, I decided to interview Erin Hanson who is and HR specialist for Liberty Diversified, International who aligns with their workplace furniture and solutions business Safco. Erin is actually a graduate of the University of Minnesota-Twin Cities so it was really cool to have the opportunity to meet an alumnus. I met with Erin because I have a relative in Safco who works as a business analyst who was able to set a meeting with her and even drive me to it. I asked Erin a series of ten questions relating to various facets of HR that we had discussed in class prior to my meeting with her.
I plan on going into the School Counseling field, so for my interview I went to a long time family friend Kay Weems. Kay is a school counselor currently at Madison Station Elementary, but she has 19 years of experience at different levels of education in counseling and in different environments as well. She also was an elementary teacher for 10 years prior to becoming a school counselor.
I really enjoyed my interview with Mrs. Cashin. She gave me some ensigns on an organization that I never knew even existed. She had a very uplifting outlook on the organization. I also like the fact that as I talked to Mrs. Cashin I could relate back to some of the things I learned in class about non-profit organization. As well as I could see the potential that this organization had and I wondered if the members could see it as
What a thrill it would be to be an Administrative Assistant in the surgery department at the Wisconsin Equine Clinic and Hospital.
The person I interviewed was Laurie Kaffka. Laurie Kaffka is a kindergarten teacher at Glenn View. She has worked at several other schools and has been teaching for 14 years and has worked in five different schools, Glenn View being her favorite school she has taught at. Her and I discussed several topics during our email interview. The topic we talked about most was how teaching is not a job for someone who is in it for the money and does not enjoy kids.
I interviewed Jaye Foucher, she is a friend, my boss, and the owner of a racing/breeding dog kennel.
This interview process really taught me how to listen to and accept the viewpoints of other people who are not necessarily from the same background that I am from. I spoke to one person that I have known for years, and another person who I never spoke with prior to the interview. My first contact was Ms. Tessy Hunt, a direct support counselor for individuals with special needs. The people who Tessy serve, face challenges that not everyone is equipped to support. I chose to interview Ms. Hunt because she provides actual services for a group of individuals who are not allowed the same opportunities and same rights that many of us take for granted. I have known Tessy for several years, and I know that her line
On February 3rd, I interviewed Keri Humphrey, who is a Foster care/ Adoptions social worker. Social work is the field, I am going into.
Dawn Poitras was my interviewee. She works in our community and school as a person who is their for kids that need someone to talk to. She gives back to the community by being there and trying to give everyone no matter who you are someone that will listen to you. A lot of kids have no one to talk to and may be struggling with substance abuse with parents at home or if they are having trouble with it. She is the one who is always here to help no matter what the issue is.
She was a supervisor so she oversaw the faculty and families that were being provided assistance. During the interview, I learned that I answer questions better than I thought I would. I was very under-confident in myself because last year I was applying for a manager position within Drake and I did not receive the job. This had made me super insecure about my interviewing skills because I had not been turned away from a job before that experience.
The two occupations that are best of my liking are Accounting Clerk and Management Information Systems this are in the branch of business administration, and in the next couple of years it will have a significant increase in the job market in this career it can be shown how Business Administration can be quite a broad degree that can deal with jobs such as Financing to other’s which involve the use of computers mainly to the increase of technology today. To start in such a job the general requirements are to have an associate’s degree and would be even best to have a bachelor’s degree to increase the job possibility in the job market it is extremely difficult to get a job without the
The person I interviewed was Mrs. L. I know her because she is my mother’s mother. The interview took place at my house and the interview lasted about 2 hours and 20 minutes. I chose to interview Mrs. L because she seems to have done everything right and in the right order to lead to a successful life. I thought it would be interesting to go into depth and find out how she really did it and find out the hardships that came with making a successful family and life. (word count: 90)
My interviewee was my mom. I chose to interview her because she lived in many different places. My mom’s name is Meredith Adams, her maiden name was Porcelli. Our interview went well, I knew a lot about my mom already because she talks a lot, but I learned some new things about her. It was still really fun to interview my mom.
