The Social Observation Generalization (SOG) that I believe whose effect has been to limit me in some way is “I am too smart to allow my environment to dictate my life choices”. I chose this SOG because growing up in South Los Angeles I’ve had to deal with the stereotypes that we are all Cholos and Cholas, that we smoke, steal, gang-bang or that we are all just plain ignorant individuals that are hardly seemed destined for success, but not everyone here fits these stereotypes. I am nothing like that. Although I am proud to be raised in this tough neighborhood, I knew that life had more to offer than going to jail or dying, therefore, I told myself that I did not want to become a product of my environment or allow it to dictate my life choices. …show more content…
Many young teens lack positive role models to look up to, for this reason, I want to take that responsibility upon myself as a future academic counselor to help guide the youth in the right direction. I know that some students have special talents beyond academics, but lack of confidence in themselves its what deters them from moving forward. So as a future academic counselor, I want to encourage those students to pursue whatever their passion is, with the hope that they truly find their element. I have always known that I wanted to positively impact other's lives. My personal and work experiences have impacted my motivation to accomplish all my dreams. In the future, I would love to influence another generation of students to also achieve their dreams. It is important to realize that many students lack self-confidence and as a result, they feel incapable of achieving great …show more content…
And, now I am starting my masters program at Cal State University, Northridge with the hope of earning my degree in college counseling. Therefore, my mindset as a young kid has helped paved the way for my continued success in education. The one way I think I would have probably tested out my SOG for validation at that time would have been to associate myself with kids who roamed the streets and where up to no good, so that I can have an idea of what my future would have been like, if I had turned to the streets. I honestly believe that it would have steered me even more towards
Serving others by utilizing the lessons I have learned through my experiences and my talents is how I want to live my life. As a first generation college student, I want to integrate myself in programs or start my own mentorship program where I am able to mentor and give back to students who are first generation college students as well. I feel it’s important to reach out to first generation college students because the amount of pressure we receive with little to no guidance can be discouraging and lead us to feel alone in this process.
As a teacher, I am responsible for the development of students academically as well as socially. I prepare them to be productive citizens while in high school and after graduation. If they are planning to attend any postsecondary training, it is my duty to make sure they are adequately prepared. As an advisor of the Council of Student Leaders, it is my purpose to put my students on the path to being great leaders. In order to achieve this, I provide them with activities that promote the healthy development of their social skills, making healthy connections and relationships with others, breaking down barriers, eliminating stereotypes, empowering their fellow students, and inclusion for everyone in our school.
After a long eight months, I can now look back and say that I completed my first year of college. It is safe to say that during that time, life was not the same as it was in high school. Many adjustments, such as sacrifices and prioritizing had to be made. However, I think that those adjustments had made me a more accountable student, but more ultimately a better rounded human being. As I am about to enter my second year at Loyola, I am ready to tackle whatever challenges I may face. I personally feel that I am still a planet’s distance away from figuring out who I really am, but I think that as long as I can keep being the best person I can be, I can accomplish what I want to do during my post-collegiate career. In this essay, I will talk about my undergraduate career at Loyola University Chicago, emphasizing my field of study, college experience, and my career goals including the route I plan to take to get there.
Some might say that to have a successful future you must be: well-liked, well-educated, and be financially stable. Through my planned degrees in Psychology, Accounting, and Music Education, I intend to give back to the youth in my community. From discussing the process of how your brain progresses from bad decisions to good ones, to finding ways to show how music could allow kids to escape from one world and into a new one by picking up an instrument or listening to a new song, to understanding the actual meaning of money and its importance in the world. Through these degrees, I want to inspire children in my community to know that they can achieve success by having a mentor on their side, helping them set feasible goals and making it easier for them to grasp them.
In all, these circumstances have led me to where I stand today. Becoming a high school guidance counselor is not only a career but one of my biggest dreams. The realities I have faced have given me the experience and knowledge of what it means to aspire for something I could not easily have. My goal as a counselor is to serve all students equally despite their circumstances. However, as any careers, there are problems I will have to
Having the opportunity as counseling students to provide services at a counseling internship placement site can be a great opportunity for us counseling students to put in practice the theories we have learned during class. But this can also be a tremendous challenge for us but at the same time it can be an incredible amazing experience. I believe the types of clients that can be kind of difficult for me to work with are high school students. I believe working with high school students can be a challenge for me, because as we know during this stage High School students are dealing with their teenager’s year and entering the life cycle of a young adulthood.
Student’s need all of the help that they can get to prepare for facing life in a real world situation as an adult. It is part of our duty to prepare them for this. Anything that we can do to help them improve their chances of success should be willingly and gracefully done. Education is probably one of the most important things we can do in life, so we as educators should focus on being the best we can be,
I had experienced a lot of brokenness in my life until hitting a low point when I was 25 years old at which time I met Christ. This brokenness resulted from childhood and early life problems and from my own choices. I had encountered God at the age of 14, in a personal moment of crisis. During this difficult situation the Holy Spirit spoke to me, assuring me of the ability to overcome the situation, that God would not give me more than I could bear. I did not know it was the Spirit at the time, but I somehow knew that what I heard was true and that it encouraged and strengthened me to make a difficult choice in that moment. However, I did not become a Christian until 11 years later. As more evidence to me of God’s love, guidance, and power, I heard this same message after all those years and the Spirit used it to lead me to Christ. One day at work my supervisor, a female Pentecostal evangelist, was ministering to a co-worker, where she explained to her how God loved her, had looked out for her in all
I’m writing to express my enthusiasm in applying for the ________position. This position interests me because it allows the opportunity to maximize performance, inspire and instill a sense of self-worth among all students.
Through individual or group counseling, I plan to focus on improving academic and social skills, as well as educating about healthy relationships, healthy lifestyles, and preparing students to be confident citizens in and outside of school. My strong interpersonal and communication skills will help me gain an understanding of the students’ struggles and will allow me to apply the appropriate counseling approach learned through graduate studies to support the student and work together to find a solution to the problem. It is very important for students to have a school counselor they can relate to and I firmly believe that I have that to offer based on my own personal, work, and academic
My personal statement will talk about how I will be the first sibling to attend college and how I love being in the kitchen. I love trying making new desserts and new dishes. If my mom and family love them, then they would put it on the menu of our restaurant. The restaurant name is called Limon. My grandmother had a restaurant as well and she taught my mother how to cook. Now my mom teaches me how to cook, I enjoy how my mother passes down my grandmother's dishes. I think my grandma would appreciate that my mom is doing that. I think later on in life I would want a restaurant of my own. I have so many wishes in life, but in order to make that happen, I would have to be successful in life and continue going to school.
On September 24, 2017 at approximately, 2:00 p.m. my mother Irma Villarreal and myself Maria Soto were returning back from Mexico and waiting in line to enter the Progresso, Texas Port Of Entry. As my mother and I were waiting in line, I immediately noticed I had forgotten my US Passport and removed myself from the line to text my husband for him to rush and bring me my passport. When my husband arrived my passport was given to another US Custom Agent, which was cordial enough to bring it to the line where I was again standing waiting to get inspected by another agent. Since my mother and I were both together and as previously explained and I had forgotten my Purse that contained my Passport, when the officer called my mother to the line
Every since I entered the workforce as a high school graduate, my experience has allowed me the opportunity to work with young people in underserved communities, while making positive contributions in the fields of non-profit and education. When I began my career as an educator in a Title I school, my passion for creating and ensuring a safe learning environment for all students, while promoting their success through academic, career, and social/personal development, has lead me to pursue a career as a professional school counselor. As a teacher, I know that our students are facing challenges both at school and home that hinder them from meeting rigorous academic standards. I believe that pursuing a career in school counseling is critical
The transition from high school to college is overwhelming; priorities change, so as keeping a balanced time between work and studies, as well as time to have fun and enjoy. These disadvantages consist of factors that affects the performance a typical working student such as working hours, expenses and finding a relatable career that will suit in the desired degree program. However, these factors only covers a small part of the problem that most students are facing. It is also important to look at the internal self that can definitely affect the academic standing of undergraduate students, such as self-efficacy and peer influence, this aspects are important as it determines one’s strength and
Thinking back on the years of high school, I remember having wonderful experiences both inside the classroom and out. I had influential teachers and the drive to succeed in order to obtain a higher education. I realize that not all students have that drive to continue their education, but as an aspiring educator I wish to seek and find that drive in each of my students. The famous philosopher and educator, John Dewey, once said, "The aim of education is to enable individuals to continue their education -- or that the object and reward of learning is continued capacity for growth." As a facilitating instructor, I plan to pursue this "aim of education" with an eclectic blend of elements
