How much should one prepare before venturing into the wild? For Transcendentalists, preparation would likely have been limited to the bare necessities. Transcendentalism was a movement that conquered America during the nineteenth century. A few beliefs from the era were that self-reliance was beneficial, money was a distraction, and truth was found in nature. One person who shared these beliefs at a more recent time in history was Chris McCandless, whose story was described by Jon Krakauer in Into the Wild. McCandless was a young man who traversed America during the early nineties. He had previously attended college and endured the pressure of his parents throughout those years. When he graduated and was finally free, Chris cut off connections with his family and friends, choosing to live a nomadic life on his own. His final journey was into the Alaskan wild; however, it may not have had to be his last adventure. There are a few situations where, if they had unfolded differently, Chris might have survived. Chris McCandless was a fool because he did not tell anyone when he planned to return from his journey, was uneducated about preserving his game, and avoided keeping close relationships.
One of Chris McCandless’s most foolish mistakes was failing to inform anyone on when he was planning to return. Chris made many new friends on his trip around America. He listened to their stories, learned from them, and told them about his plan to enter Alaska, but never talked about
I agree with Callarman when he stated, '' I think that Chris McCandless was bright and ignorant at the same time. He had no common sense, and he had no business going into Alaska with his Romantic silliness. He made a lot of mistakes based on arrogance. I don't admire him at all for his courage nor his noble idea. Really, I think he was just plain crazy.'' I'm in the same page as Callarman because I give McCandless the credit for the courage he had to go into the wild without anything just living how an animal would live in the wild. At the same time I think he just ran away from his problems instead of facing them.
Chris McCandless thought that he was prepared for his Alaskan odyssey. It turned out he was very ill prepared which is what caused his death. He did not pack enough food because he compared the amount of food he would need to his southern adventures. He also didn’t have the
First of all, Christopher McCandless was not prepared for life in Alaska. If Christopher did more planning for his trip, then he would have had a better chance at surviving. It is believed that, “By design McCandless came into the country with insufficient provisions, and he lacked certain pieces of equipment deemed essential by many Alaskans: a large-calibre rifle, map and compass, an ax” (Krakauer 180). Christopher did not bring any of the needed supplies with him to Alaska. If he did more research on Alaska then he would know it is not easy to survive without the basic essentials. He was naive and believed he could live off the land. Christopher should have found out that even the most experienced of people have trouble surviving in Alaska. Even if they had all the supplies. People who prepared for Alaska have a better chance of survival. Jon Krakauer is an example of somebody that was prepared for Alaska. He states in his book that “Unlike McCandless, however, I have in my backpack a 1:63,360-scale topographic map (that is, a map on which one inch represents one mile). Exquisitely detailed, it indicates that half a mile downstream, in the throat of the canyon, is a gauging station” ( Krakauer 173). He explains that he brought a map that helped him find a way across the water safely. If Christopher was better prepared and he brought a map it could have saved his life. He could not make it across safely so he headed back to the bus. He would not have had the opportunity to eat bad seeds ( believed to be what killed him) if he knew a way across.
Some say that Chris was an idiot for going out into the Alaskan wilderness unprepared and without any knowledge of nature. “Why would anyone intending to live off the land for a few months forget boy scout rule number one: Be prepared” (krakauer, 71). This was a complaint sent in by a Alaskan hunter, and there were many more that followed that. The people writing the negative comments all believed that Chris either wanted attention, was stupid, or went out on a suicide mission. However, Chris was none of those things, he wouldn’t have been able to survive 113 days off
“Wilderness appealed to those bored or disgusted with man and his works” (Roderick Nash). Chris McCandless, a modern transcendentalist, sent out on an adventure to find his true self in the wilderness of the North American continent. In the two years he was away, he met many individuals he called his friends and explored the extent of the American West. However, Chris was found dead in an abandoned bus on the Stampede Trail in the deep wilderness of Alaska in early September 1992. Chris believed he could live his life without the disruption of others. Henry David Thoreau believed that individuals can strive for themselves without government interruption. Chris McCandless, in Jon Krakauer’s documentary Into the Wild, believes that living off the land and life to its fullest without help from others compares to Henry David Thoreau’s beliefs in his writing “Civil Disobedience.”
For someone to have plans to survive in the harsh wilderness of the Alaskan frontier many have said that McCandless was completely un prepared as recalled in the first chapter of the book by Jim Gallien who picked up McCandless outside of Fairbanks Alaska and drove him to the stampede trail, the beginning of Chris’s journey into the wild. “He wasn’t carrying anywhere near as much food and gear as you’d be expecting a guy to be carrying for that kind of trip.” (Krakauer 4) Through the research that Krakauer completed we know that Chris was carrying only a ten-pound bag of rice and some paperback books along with other camping supplies. Jim
The book Into the Wild by Jon Krakauer, tells the story of a boy, called Chris McCandless, who was someone that created an impact on many different people as he journeyed around the West. “You could tell right away that Alex was intelligent.” Westerberg recalls “He read a lot” (18). Because Westerberg was the second person Chris used his fake name upon, it shows that Chris McCandless doesn't want people to know who he really is and he wanted to reinvent himself as he wanted to be not as society wanted him. Chris McCandless has quite a few literary heroes who have helped him shape his own opinion on life’s philosophy and were constantly quoted and listed in Chris McCandless’s story. “He gave Westerberg a treasured 1942 edition of Tolstoy’s War and Peace. On the title he inscribed, ‘Transferred to Wayne Westerberg from Alexander. October, 1990. Listen to Pierre’” (19). It’s interesting that Chris wrote “Listen to Pierre” (19), because Pierre is a character who is an alter ego like Chris McCandless, who goes by Alexander Supertramp.
The book about Chris McCandless’s journey into the Alaskan bush, Into The Wild by Jon Krakauer, received a lot of criticism about Chris being foolish for being unprepared. From the articles that I have read, most of the sources do believe that he was poorly prepared for his journey. But there are a few people who believe he was prepared mentally, and an even smaller amount believe he was fully prepared. I believe that Chris only knew what he was doing mentally. He did not have the correct tools or the developed skills to survive, for an extended period of time in the wild. But, he did know what he was about to get himself into. He planned out the trip and knew exactly what his risk factors were. Chris McCandless was either prepared
Chris McCandless was reckless and arrogant because he went into the wild unprepared and ill-equipped, he overestimated his ability to survive off the land and finally he had a complete disregard of nature's might and these are the main reasons that chris ended up dead One of the reasons that supports chris being reckless and arrogant was because when he went into the wild he went in unprepared and ill-equipped. For one he didn't bring a tent or anything to help protect him from the cold.second he had no proper maps or any other reconnaissance equipment which would have saved his life since on all the maps of the area it shows how to get around the river that stopped him from escaping Alaska. Finally he only brought a small rifle which couldn't harm a large predator and it would make hunting incredibly difficult. The second reason that proves he is reckless and arrogant is that he overestimated his ability to survive off the land alone for one he didn't bring any food other than a pound of rice he also didn't bring any medical supplies nothing not even a single bandaid so if he got hurt he would have been screwed.
Ultimately, Chris made poor decisions that led to his demise. Regrettably, Chris was unprepared. He traveled into the Alaskan wilderness at the worst possible time. He had no idea that the month of April would be so unpredictable and brutal. When he first came across the Teklanika River, the water was low and he was able to easily cross it. A few months later the river was swollen and uncrossable blocking his return. “He turned around and began walking to the west, back toward the bus, back into the fickle heart of the bush” (Krakauer 171). The decision to turn around and head back to the bus changed both his and his

Christopher McCandless was a well-educated graduate from a pristine university, born and raised in a wealthy region of the East Coast. However, he wasn’t content with himself as a person and believed he could obtain a higher state of being within his own existence by making major changes in his life. As a result, he led himself on a romanticized journey to find himself in the Alaskan interior, which concluded in his demise. The world-renowned theoretical physicist Albert Einstein put into words that “two things are infinite: the universe and human stupidity; and I'm not sure about the universe.” McCandless failed to symbolize a heroic and intelligent state of being and jeopardized his life by prematurely embarking on his journey into the enormity of the Alaskan wild. Chris McCandless might have been a man of academic intelligence, but his insatiable desire for adventure caused him to become reckless and perish in the wild.
