Let’s be honest, the school year is long enough. Some people believe that extending the school year affords more educational opportunities. It has been proposed to extend the school year to a year-round schedule with short breaks each season. The school year should most definitely not be extended; keeping the normal schedule will cost less, be easier, and give the students more real world experience. While it is true that there are more educational opportunities with a year- round schedule, having time off to relax can be just as beneficial. First of all, the normal 9-month schedule would cost considerably less. The school would have to pay for three months less of lunches for students, as well as electricity and transportation.
Imagine a school year that gave the students one week off after every quarter and every Friday off. Does this sound exciting and rich with possibilities? Then ask the superintendent of the school district to consider year round school with only four days per week.First, students would not forget what they learned over the long summer. Next, parents would not have to get day care except on Fridays instead of the whole summer. Finally, teachers and students would have better relationships as they spend more time together instead of being rushed. Let’s take a look at some proof.
Furthermore, switching over to year round schooling can prove to be more costly than the normal school year. First off, the budget for a year round program, when compared to a traditional program, is much larger. There are more materials, such as school supplies, to be bought, a larger cost for air conditioning, and the increased expenses when a facility is used year round. One of the main concerns is that the life of a school becomes considerably shorter. Usually, in the summer time schools are under repair and made ready for the next year. If so what? The ability to retain information is the biggest benefit, that would be worth the shorter breaks throughout the year. It would be really beneficial to the students who are doing bad in school could use year round school to their advantage because they wouldn't forget anything and even if they did it would be very little but forgetting a little is better than forgetting a lot and if that would improve their academic scores on tests the SAT or the ACT and that would lead to better colleges overall year round school would improve academic scores

To start with, if schools offered year round school, the kids wouldn’t forget as much information over the big, long, and fun summer. For example, if you go to balanced school year, yes you would have to go to school earlier, but you won’t have to review all the boring stuff from the previous year. In the long run it will help you out a lot. Also, you can be enjoying your extra-long break while other kids are in school, learning and being tortured.
The three-month summer vacation block may sound great for planning vacations, but in reality, it’s not all it’s cracked up to be. By having one large vacation block, parents have to compete in the workplace to get the appropriate time off and travel is more expensive because everyone else is traveling. How would you feel if your school district made you go to school year-round instead of getting a summer vacation? Certain educators feel that the summer break we receive now is way too long and students should continue school all year round with occasional breaks throughout the school year. If the year-round school was put into place then students would receive a 3-4 week break in the summer,longer winter break,and a week off in the spring and fall. The school year should remain how it is including a summer vacation instead of year-round school because many students depend on the summer vacation we already have uptain for a variety of reasons: there are many job opportunities that students take during the summer,summer vacation allows students to travel places that are only open in the summer,and students have more time to relax and calm down from all of the stress they received from school.
Now I know you all are thinking, why would I want to go to school for an extra two months, while instead I could be tanning by the pool or on family vacation enjoying my stress free summer. Whith year round school you would still have plenty of time to do these things. A common misconception is that year round schools are in session for more days than regular school, when in fact students from both types of schools attend 180 days of school in a year. The most common year round school plan is the “45/15” plan. On this plan, students spends 45 days in school, then take a 15 day break. Year-round school schedule can benefit the students and the school. My opponents may believe it should not go year round because they feel it it takes away family time. I believe school should be year-round because of changes in our society, teacher and student stress reduction, and academic achievement.
Having year round school would be beneficial educationally, but personally as a student I believe it’s not a good idea. Kids love having a big break off school to have the opportunity to go places. I usually travel in the summer and if I only had 3-4 weeks it wouldn’t work out. Last summer I went to Texas and I wouldn’t have been able to do most of the activities I did because they only had them on certain days. Also 5 summers ago my family and I flew out to Germany. We spent two weeks there, but we didn’t go as soon as summer started so if the break wasn’t as long as it is we wouldn’t have had the chance to fly there.
Year-round schooling has become more common in the past couple of years. By extending the school year, students get more breaks spread out throughout the year. This will help students learn more, but will also still give them breaks for relaxing. Many researchers believe it is more beneficial to spread out the school year. Lastly, year-round school puts stress on teachers. Teachers already have to make lesson plans, prepare projects, organize tests, and make make sub plans if needed. Since year-round school has many small breaks teachers need to work faster which might affect the kids learning process. Plus, teachers will have to assign the assignments not completed for homework or never got to. Also, the 2 ½ month break is a time were teachers regroup and relax.
