Imagine your life being caged in only one environment, being feed like 3 times a day, not living your life how you want to, and being viewed by tons of people each day. Would you like to live that way? Bet many are saying no, so if we wouldn’t like to live that way why do we treat zoo animals that way. We should not have zoos because there only for our enjoyment and its not healthy for the animals. No matter how nice we treat the animals and how we make there homes look they still suffer. “According to the Captive Animals’ Protection Society , a UK-based organization, “wild animals in zoos suffer physically and mentally as their complex social, behavioral and physical needs cannot be met in unnatural man-made environments” (pg.4). Yes we
By placing these animals in unsuitable environments, they are experiencing mental and physical abuse. Moreover, their behaviors are being reformed in order to even be able to survive in such terrible conditions, therefore, altering future generations of these animals. So, not only are zoos changing these animals to conform to their artificial surroundings, but they are also disturbing the natural instincts of the species in order to survive in captivity. As mentioned by the Humane Society of the United States, “Inhumane conditions teach children the wrong message, seeming to condone indifference. Zoos should educate about how animals live in the wild, and help preserve them there.” (The Humane Society of the United States 7). While zoos often try and replicate the natural habitats that these animals live in, they cannot be successfully duplicated, therefore wrongly educating children and leading them to
When it comes to the view on the amount zoos spend on different functions, conservationists and experts have ranging opinions. Although the ideas all revolve around the same thing, money, the main trains of thought are how zoos spend it, how useful it is in the facilities, and what it is spent on. Gretchen Wyler, vice president of the Hollywood, California, office of the Humane Society of the United States, subscribes to the idea of how useful money is in the facilities zoos spend it on believing that for a zoo to spend $38 million on 3.7-acre elephant enclosure is too little for too much money. Her solution to the problem is disbanding the program. A retired general curator at the Los Angeles Zoo, Leslie Schobert, agrees with this train of thought as well; however, he believes that the funds should be spent on creating an elephant sanctuary in the American South. As before mentioned, almost all the experts agree that the money spent on these programs are not spent well; nevertheless, they have varying ideas on the solution to this problem. Each idea having downfalls that do not fix the overall problem of how the money is spent. Nikia Fico, the director of Save Tucson Elephants and a law student at the University of Arizona, focused in what zoos spend their money on. She believes that “‘...zoos should keep only those animals that they can take of.’” (Cohn). Therefore, if zoos slim down their animal populations by giving them away to other zoos, they can have more money to
Keeping animals in zoos is a long-discussed ethical issue. Some people argue that keeping wild animals in zoos is reasonable, however its intolerable. The animals might be treated poorly. They are taken out of their natural habitat, put into a completely different environment and confront species of animals which they never encountered when they were free. The zookeepers don’t know how to take proper care of the animals. Keeping animals in zoos is unethical because, they can die of stress from seeing humans, they’re endangering species, and the keepers aren’t capable of taking care of them.
"Zoos have improved a lot in the last 4,000 years. These days, most zoos create friendlier environments for animals. ... Now, however, they get their animals through captive breeding programs and other zoos." This is an understandable concern, however, but this is not the case. Animals are not meant to be kept in captivity for human entertainment, animals are meant to be wild, the artificial surroundings in zoos an cause Obsessive Compulsive Disorder
First not all animals are treated equally in every zoo. But most importantly, they will always be going under this treatment until everyone is aware of the kind of care these animals are going through behind those cage doors. Or unless the authorities get more strict on how the zoos need to care and handle those animals, then maybe there could be a change in the lives of the animals. With research anyone can learn and educate themselves of what they can do to try to help those animals in
Zoos may seem fun to visit and exciting to see the animals; but what you don’t see is the suffering and depression that lies in these helpless creatures. There are many arguments whether or not zoos are good or bad, and if they should be removed or kept. Several think that zoos should be abolished or at least very much improved, due to animal cruelty. While, others want zoos to stay because it is beneficial for the animals and people. I strongly believe that zoos aren’t good for both the public and animals for numerous reasons.
Zoos have been around for thousands of years holding thousands of different species for humans to marvel at. The first recorded instance of animals in captivity was in fifteen hundred B.C. in egypt where animals from all over Africa were kept. Zoos have been used as ways for people to view animals they would most likely never have a chance to see in the wild. This is why zoos have been so popular because everyday people have the opportunity to see animals that they would have never seen before. Unfortunately animals living in zoos have no chance of living in their natural habitat. They will spend their entire lives living in a enclosement being marveled at by humans. Animals should not be kept in captivity because no living creature should
Zoos sometimes even take endangered or hurt species and nurture them back to health, but the amount of human interaction animals get in the zoo environment can be extremely harmful in the long run. By becoming more comfortable with humans, animals a lot of the time become more vulnerable to poachers and predators (Cite). Also, students at Oxford University studied the effects of zoo captivity on species and found many animals suffer reproductive, health, and behavioral problems after being held in captivity (Evans). And on few occasions animals, such as snow leopards and ring-tailed lemurs, adjust well and can even thrive in captivity. However, a lot of the time the only reason we keep them in captivity is for the education of humans, maybe it’s time to educate another way, perhaps with some of the technology we are loaded with
Firstly, wild animals in captivity is inhumane. Animals in zoos are often thought of as objects instead of living beings with feelings and emotions. An example of a situation that was inhumane and proves that zoos care more about income than animals took place at the Copenhagen zoo where an 18-month-old, healthy giraffe was killed because it was considered useless for breeding. According to an article by www.peta.org “Even large, well-known, and popular zoos engage in unscrupulous practices, such as dumping unwanted animals or taking animals from the wild.” Because most of these animals were raised or born in captivity, they were not able to develop the necessary survival skills needed to survive in the wild.
Imagine you are an animal trapped in a cage, stuck there, away from your home, for the rest of your life. This is what animals in zoos feel everyday. Zoos have been around since 1874. Several people are ready to make a change in a world and banned zoos. Many zoos out there are corrupt, and animals in them have never even seen there natural enviroment. Although most zoos try to keep animals happy and safe, zoos can make animals loose skills such as hunting, affect there normal sleep schedule, and no zoo can replicate animals natural environments perfectly.
Zoos have changed inexplicably since their creation, however, they have not made the full transition to where they need to be. The legal definition of a zoo is, “a park or an institution in which living animals are kept and usually exhibited to the public.” This definition is correct in that zoos today are used for public amusement and little is thought of these animals that go through harsh treatment just for our amusement. Zoos have been around since before Christ and were often owned by people of wealth. This was a normal occurrence for the wealthy to have exotic animals that they used for their own entertainment or just to show off their status. The earliest known zoo was founded in 3500 B.C. near Hierakonpolis, Egypt at one of its most urban center. Another ancient zoo was owned by Queen Hatshepsut of Egypt and was dated back to 1500 B.C. However, Egypt is not the only place that these ancient zoos occupied. Other zoos were also found in places such as China, England, and Australia. Now there are modern zoos in almost every city in the world that boasts an array of animals. With all the different zoos around the world, we see different practices on how these animals are treated and what they are subjected to. And although zoos have been around for ages there never have been any strict guidelines on how to properly treat animals that reside there.
First, animals should not be in captivity because zoos don't provide animals with enough space. According to Vegan Peace, it states, “Zoo animals have to spend day after day, week after week, year after year in the exact same enclosure, this makes their
The sight of an unfamiliar animal can be a welcome distraction, even a short-term remedy, for a sick child. But you can't put a leash and a surgical mask on a rhino and march it through the front door of a hospital for a visit. That's why zoos and aquariums across the U.S. are teaming up with pediatric hospitals. They are beaming in video footage of sea otters getting their teeth brushed, tiger cubs getting belly rubs, and pandas munching on bamboo.
Did you know that if you keep animals in zoos they have a higher chance of survival? Also, they give them the medical help they need.In my opinion, zoos are a good place for little animals to grow so if they get severley bad they get the medical help they might need. Most animals grow thier speciesin zoos and many people can see there favorite animal and also can learn about their animal. The focus of this paper is how to keep the animals off the endangered list, the zoo keeper give them the medical help when needed, and they also let people see and learn about their favorite animal. The purpose for this writing piece is to persuade you to keep animals in zoos.
Is this how animals are really supposed to be treated? Would you want to be treated like this? So why do we insist on keeping it this way? Zoos have been around for a long time, but just recently people have began to wonder if it's really what's best for the animals, or for us? So, they began talking about it, seeing if all animals, including endangered animals, should live in the wild or in man-made environments, and they started doing experiments. Many species are dying every year, and because of this, zoos are being blamed.
