Title
Imagine being up all night doing homework after homework. Nobody wants to imagine that because not everyone likes doing homework at like 4 a.m. in the morning. Kids are supposed to get around 8-10 hours of sleep. Why would kids be doing your homework instead of sleeping and getting rest at night? This does not bother teens sleeping schedule at all. Teens are usually up at midnight talking to friends and playing on their phones. Middle School and most High Schools start at 8 a.m. but teenagers do not go to bed until 5 and they realize they have school then go to bed.Students are being forced to not have social time because of all the homework they have. Family life is impacted when students receive large amounts of homework to complete

The Board of Education thinks homework helps with our school work or tests. Also, according to Alfie Kohn students should not be held responsible if they did not do their homework because teachers do not know how much homework they have at the end of the day to finish by tomorrow. However, this is ineffective because the teachers think their students always have someone like a mother, father or sibling to help but they aren't always free. Sometimes some people need help doing things so they have their parents or family push them a little bit and guide them through most of it. According to Wendy J. Ponte she has to help her kids out with homework 24/7 and has to deal with them being all whiny and acting totally different since they do not want to do their homework. Also According to Judeen Bartos he talks about the students complaining about the homework so much that the parents get stressed out because they have to stop whatever they are doing and help their kids with their homework. Students should not receive homework because it is harmful in many different
As evidence, a 2007 MetLife study found that 45 percent of students in grades three to 12 spend more than an hour a night doing homework. If middle schoolers get 3 hours of homework, think of how much more high school and college students get, especially when 3 hours of homework is a lot of time taken up already for a middle schooler when usually they don’t even have jobs. Nearly 80% of High school and college students have jobs after school hours. Which their jobs might go to 9PM at night and they still have more than 3 hours of homework to do. That gives no time for them to relax, get the right amount of sleep, and spend time with
One of the reasons why homework should not be given to middle school students is because it causes sleep loss. Students have so much work to do that they have to stay up all night to finish it. Craig Canapari, a pediatrician specializing in the care of children with sleeping and breathing problems says, “The combination of heavy homework loads and early school start times is a major cause of sleep deprivation and consequent stress in teens.” In the article, “Does Too Much Homework Cause Sleep Deprivation?”, it says, “A clear side
Students should be required to have exercise in school because not only will they get a benefit out of it but also it will help them from depression and anxiety. Students should let their brains rest and toughen out their bodies. Your brain is already getting tons of exercise/knowledge each day. There are many benefits to exercising in college. Few of those benefits are: exercise prevents weight gain, exercise boosts your immune system, exercise can help you sleep, exercise is good self control. All these benefits will help each college student become an excellent scholar. You would not be tired during class as often, you will not gain any weight, and you will not have a problem waking up early to go to school. Exercising demonstrates how
Our world today relies very heavily on money, which is why a 14-year-old should be able to involve themselves in the growing economy. The age for getting a job should be decreased to age 14 to increase teen responsibility, help with rising costs of school fees, and assist families financially.
The value of homework varies, most high school students don’t mind doing it, but most students find it stressful themselves. Homework has been a subject of debate over the years varying among students and educators within different grade levels. Even though most students find homework stressful, it’s easy for others who focused on the lesson and understand most of it. Most kids who do homework claim that it usually takes about an hour or 2 just to finish depending on classes and how much work is given. Other students including myself have been under pressure due to amount of work assigned by their teachers, grades, and how long it will take to complete.
“Your assignment is to write a persuasive essay and present it to the class in a week. You will be graded based on how convincing it is. Today we will be choosing topics,” announced Mr. Bowerbank, my 7th grade English teacher and ruler of classroom 110. My class simultaneously groaned at the prospect of work. I simply lifted my head with intrigue as it was already May and about time we had our first essay. He then proceeded to give examples of topics we could choose and gave us some time to think before we had to tell him our topic. My classmates were already rushing to tell the teacher their idea lest someone else steal it. That meant the usual abortion, death penalty, or drug use topics were out. I really couldn't think of anything and the teacher was slowly making his way through the remaining students like an executioner beheading criminals in a line. I have always thought that he would make a marvelous supervillain if he had a curly mustache, a tophat, and a cape. Eventually my name was called. I slowly dragged myself over to his desk. Even sitting down, he still seemed to tower over me. “What is your topic Cindy?” As usual in such desperate times, my mind turned to food. “Waffles are better than pancakes.” I figured that a waffle was just a differently shaped pancake with a nicer texture. “Hmm. Excellent topic. I look forward to your essay!” I survived to live yet another day.
Everyone knows that graded homework can be overwhelming at any age. Homework is being introduced too soon into children’s academic careers. It is clear that the government is pushing it more. I believe that graded homework should be more of a choice not another chore. In truth, should students have homework?
When you think of school, what does it mean to you? Does it mean an education? A place filled with homework? A place that prepares you for the future? You may think all of these things about school, but one of them is not correct. Our form of education doesn’t completely prepare you for your career and what lies ahead. School is supposed to be a place that teaches you the skills needed in order to be an adult, but not all those skills are based on your knowledge of Algebra or knowing the history of the Roman Empire. Schools should require classes that teach life skills to help prepare students for their future.
Recently, the "every 28 hours” has become a rallying cry of the Black Lives Matter movement and other related campaigns. But what exactly do these groups claim to happen every 28 hours?
Snap! Tweet! Ding! As humans we are constantly bombarded with texts, “tweets”, and “snaps”, in hopes of bringing closure and feelings of togetherness. By definition, we as humans are social creatures that rely on the comfort and validity of others. However, this lifestyle can become addicting and eventually turn us into media-consuming zombies that spend hours swiping through the pictures of our peers, friends and families. After a while, our lives become so saturated with the media and technology that we desire a retreat from these devices; and to do so some of us may follow the path of switching off our phones for an extended period of time. While cutting down media consumption and tuning out unnecessary information can be beneficial to maintain our sanity, some people take this a step further...sometimes in the most idiotic manner possible. For example, Chris McCandless was known to have it all, he was a Harvard Law School graduate, and he hailed from a rich family. However, this materialistic life wasn't up to par with Chris’s inner desires, and in order to fulfill his desires of minimalism Chris decided to move into the wild. Sure, moving away from human life is normal, but the way at which Chris went about the matter makes him an arrogant idiot who was unimaginative and overconfident.
According to a survey performed by the University of Phoenix, high school teachers assign an average of 42 minutes of homework per class. If a student has an average of 5 main classes, they will end up with 3.5 hours of homework a day, along with 7 hours of school and extracurriculars. This is too much for a high school student. Homework is assigned with the belief that it will prepare students for tests and help reinforce what is taught. Although I understand how homework gives students extra practice, it should be no more than 10 minutes for each high school class because that much work could have a significant negative impact on the student's mental and physical health, is too time consuming, and it has no positive impact on learning.
Imagine if you had three pages of homework in five of your classes, practice, a job, or any other extracurricular activity after school with no time to do your homework at home. Adding a study skill at East Jordan Middle High School will provide students time to do their homework and allow them to get help from a teacher. Without time to do their homework at school, most students just won't do it. Therefore, EJMHS must provide every student with study skills, in order to allow students to catch up on their grades, manage their time, and relieve their stress from homework.
Imagine a warm Saturday in July. You are walking on your favorite hiking trail, with nothing but your clothes, a map, and a backpack filled with essentials. The only sounds you can hear are the leaves and branches crunching beneath your shoes, the wind rustling through the trees, and the distant melody of singing birds. Or perhaps you are wading through a lake, the cold water engulfing you, the sun warming your face. How do you feel? Stressed out and anxious? Or relaxed and peaceful? If you are like most people, you probably feel relaxed and peaceful. Exercising, especially outdoors, is a great way to not only get in shape physically, but also to reduce stress and improve your overall quality of life.
Student athletes and students in general have been loaded down with homework for the past couple of years. It has caused major stress and drowsiness that leads to failing grades. Because the homework is overwhelming, most students cannot keep up and fall under the heavy load. Many students have tried telling their teachers about their busy schedules, but most say there is no excuse. Although many believe in the importance of homework, too much causes exhaustion, stress, and a decrease in a student athletes performance which can ultimately prevent them from receiving scholarships needed to pursue their career.
