According to a survey performed by the University of Phoenix, high school teachers assign an average of 42 minutes of homework per class. If a student has an average of 5 main classes, they will end up with 3.5 hours of homework a day, along with 7 hours of school and extracurriculars. This is too much for a high school student. Homework is assigned with the belief that it will prepare students for tests and help reinforce what is taught. Although I understand how homework gives students extra practice, it should be no more than 10 minutes for each high school class because that much work could have a significant negative impact on the student's mental and physical health, is too time consuming, and it has no positive impact on learning.
The first reason that homework should be no more than 10 minutes is that it has a negative effect on a student’s mental and physical health. High School is already a stressful time, with the prospect of college to worry about, grades to maintain, and extracurriculars to keep up with. According to Stanford, 56% of students consider homework their greatest source of stress. This is harmful to students because stress causes headaches, muscle tension, chest pain, fatigue, stomach pain, anxiety, depression, undereating, and much more. Also, homework leads to lack of sleep. Lack of sleep is harmful because it leads to heart disease, high blood pressure, and other detrimental things. It also weakens school performance. Focusing in school is
A homework limit should exist because students have sports and extracurriculars that people do after school. This work may interfere with students’ schedules. It is more of a hassle to find the time to do homework with all the activities that pupils do. Students may also have to sacrifice their own time to finish the stack of homework they have been assigned. As a student that plays a sport in high school, there were definitely multiple times when homework was overwhelming. Parents enforce kids to join some clubs or join a team sport to get the full high school experience. Not only is this happening with things in school, but also events at home. Homework can also interfere with family events like dinners and parties. If a student has a loud household then there were frequent times when there are no places to concentrate on long homework assignments. These students most likely have these problems every day, which takes away from time to do their homework. No time is available for students to be able to do the longer assignments. Time is scarce to even eat dinner, consequently if there is a long practice or game that someone had to attend. One might
The next reason too much homework is harmful to students is that studies show more homework to cause lower test scores. One to two hours of homework a week does not cause a major change in test scores (Wolchover). There is no evidence of homework having any academic benefit in elementary or middle school, and the academic benefit found in high school is very weak (Kohn). Homework is not shown to help students academically until grades ten through twelve (Wolchover). There is also no proof that homework increases good study habits in students (Kohn).
This is because I believe that students already get enough practice in an average school day and giving them too much homework will lead them to despise learning and school. I think teachers should not give homework for three main reasons: so kids can have more family time, participate in other out-of-school activities without worry, and so they don’t have to stay up late finishing homework, which greatly strains their academic performance. Homework affects your family life in two main ways. First, you don’t have time for family activities after school if you are overwhelmed with homework. And second, if you stay up late doing homework, you will be too tired to do any family activities. Teachers should not consider other activities when assigning homework. This is because not all students have the same
Is giving students excessive homework beneficial? Excessive homework is not beneficial to the students; the amount of homework is causing more negative effects. Well what is considered to be too much homework? Studies have shown that too much homework is considered to be more than two hours per night, and that more than two hours can be counterproductive (Levy). More than two hours of homework is not beneficial and it can lead to students not having time anymore to do activities, having health problems, and even making it counterproductive.
High School students shouldn't have more than two hours of homework a night due to sports, work, and their social lives. Just imagine if you had to go to work all day, then come home and go to work again until two in the morning. How effective would that make you in the morning? You would simply just be distressed and unable to work the whole next day and then before you know it you have to stay up and work until two in the morning again. Now relate that to kids and homework, when they have to stay up and do it after a long day that they already had. And after other activities that students have had they don't have time to do that much homework.
Imagine being up all night doing homework after homework. Nobody wants to imagine that because not everyone likes doing homework at like 4 a.m. in the morning. Kids are supposed to get around 8-10 hours of sleep. Why would kids be doing your homework instead of sleeping and getting rest at night? This does not bother teens sleeping schedule at all. Teens are usually up at midnight talking to friends and playing on their phones. Middle School and most High Schools start at 8 a.m. but teenagers do not go to bed until 5 and they realize they have school then go to bed.Students are being forced to not have social time because of all the homework they have. Family life is impacted when students receive large amounts of homework to complete
First there is way too much homework. Here are some reasons why having a lot of homework is not a good thing. Students that have a lot of homework can’t spend a lot of time with family. (Washington) Also students can’t spend a lot of time outside. (Washington) Some students also get an average of 6.1 hours a week of homework (Washington) There is a so called ten minute rule (Wallace). Kids
Homework must not be given out to students in high school. 1. Because many students spend at least 6-7 hours at school, have additional after school commitments and having more homework may cause stress.Children work hard at school everyday and they need the time to relax their brains and rest their bodies.
Firstly, schools should limit homework because it causes stress. For example, a recent study surveyed over 4300 students at 10 high schools in middle-class California communities. The results revealed that only one percent of the participants felt that homework was not a stressor, while in contrast, a staggering 70% claimed that they were “often or always stressed” over homework. Symptoms of
But actually, more homework doesn’t do the trick. Too much homework can get into resting time or activities students need after school. Kids need their own time to be able to lay back and relax. On,”Healthline”, it states,”Research shows that some students regularly higher amounts of homework than experts recommend, which may cause stress and negative health effects.” More homework will intervene with students downtime and brain breaks needed after school. It can also negatively affect the child’s stress and possibly create negative health issues. Homework can be good, but too much can get in the way of a student’s relaxing time needed after
Homework is proven to be slowly cutting into students time leaving them less time to sleep which is becoming a bigger and bigger issue. According to National Sleep foundation going from ages 13 to 17 students should be getting at least eight hours of sleep but only 15% of students are actually getting that amount of sleep. Homework should not be assigned due to it cutting into students sleeping time. This part of the issue is very major because sleep is something that gives humans energy and it also is a time for the mind to relax so that the next day the student can be fully
Ultimately, a lot of homework makes kids stressed out and unfocused. With all the homework teachers give out now, it makes kids have to worry about each sheet of paper and what grade they will get on those papers. According to article Do our kids have too much homework? from Great Schools, kids homework should go through the rule of 10 meaning in first grade homework should be 10 minutes long, 20 minutes for second grade and so on. This would help kids not become stressed because this is the ideal amount of time it should take for each grade
The National Education Association recommends that in first grade, students should spend twenty minutes on homework a night and an additional ten minutes per grade level after that. Then if this is the case why do high schoolers spend 210 minutes of homework a night instead of 120 minutes? Homework can be good, but it also has its drawbacks. Many times it interferes with a student's social life, as they wouldn't have enough time to spend with their friends and family. Due to a lack of sleep that is caused by homework, students lose REM sleep ( rapid eye movement). When students lose REM sleep, they tend to forget things because while in REM sleep the brain stores memories. Sadly, homework can also lead to stress and anxiety. In many ways, homework can negatively impact a student's life.
According to the article by Druker, “If bombarded with countless lessons at school and at home, students may feel stress and anxiety should they fail to complete the assignment on time.” They should be allowed to spend time exploring different things outside school. Children require time to rest and take their minds off of school work, as too much can make them feel burnt out and become a burden. Too much homework can negatively impact the performance of students and become counterproductive instead of improving achievements in school. It can decrease the value the kids see in the work they take home and decrease their ability to commit as much time as they should to each task. Children need freetime to do things like spend time with family and friends and participate in sports. By having too much homework, it makes it difficult for children to have a
Students should only spend enough time on homework so that the subject is reinforced and not just a waste of time. The national PTA suggest that from K-3 grades there should be no more than 20 minutes a day, for 4-6 grades there should be 20-40 minutes of homework, and from 7-12 grades time varies do to types of subjects and number of subjects taken(KidSource). Anymore than these recommended amount of times is seen excessive by the national PTA. Surprisingly U.S. students are working as hard as Asians: 24% of eighth graders do more then two hour of homework compared to Japans 28% and Germanys 17%(Brimelow108). Are we working to hard, researchers don't think so, U.S. student grades are improving. As of 1996 one in every sixth grader does more than an hour of
