32.2% of animals are abandoned, 12.4% hoarded, 11.4% shot, 8.7% used for fighting, 7.0% beaten, 5.6% tortured, 2.5% thrown, 2.5% stabbed, 2.1% burned, and the rest are kicked, choked, hung, drowned, and burned(Statistics). Animals like orcas, tigers, dolphins, leopards, elephants, blue whales, sea turtles, sea lions, monkeys, pandas, tortoises, hippopotamuses, polars bears, rhinos, great white sharks, beluga whales, jaguars, bison, narwhals, brown bears, gorillas, and penguins are going extinct(Species List). The list of animals going extinct gets bigger and bigger every year. The extinction of animals is increasing because of animal experimentation, animal captivity, and in-home abuse. Animal experimentation is one of the many things leading to animal extinction. According to Humane Society of the United States, an estimated six million animals are dissected in American high schools each year. In 2004, a survey was taken of 749 members of National Science Teachers Association that showed nearly eighty percent of educators think dissecting is important for science learning, but animal experimentation opponents believe that “even if the animals are well cared for in laboratories the practice is inhumane”. In schools, when students are dissecting mice, they first rinse off the mouse with water to remove the chemicals used to preserve it. Then it is placed in a dissecting pan so they can observe its external body characteristics. The mouse’s skin is removed with scissors and
As a child, many people would often go to the zoo or to the circus and see animals in real life. In circuses, animals would often perform tricks and stunts, dazzling the audience. In the zoo, people would often see animals in their native habitat, or what looks like it. Children were mainly amazed with the animals and were always exited to go see the animals. As the years go by, they start to realize that some of the animals are suffering and are being mistreated, especially in circuses. They see that the animals in zoos are depressed and lonely and the animals in the circuses are chained up. What is worse is that animals in laboratories are often treated very poorly; more poorly than what Americans treat prisoners and refugees. There have been many debates on whether animals should be held in captivity. Some groups believe that animals should not be held in captivity because they have the same capacities as humans. They believe that animals can feel emotion and have a sense of morality. Animals in captivity are deprived of their natural habitat and their instincts. Animals raised in captivity tend to rely more on humans compared to animals raised in the wild. They also believe zookeepers and trainers are putting themselves at risk when taking care of the animals. There have been many incidents including the death of trainers by animals, one highlighted by the movie “Blackfish” by director Gabriela Cowperthwaite. There are others who believe that putting animals in captivity is beneficial for not only the animal, but for humans as well. Humans get more jobs if more animals are put into captivity because there is an increase in the amount of people needed. Another benefit of keeping animals in captivity is that it could help save a species who is endangered and close to going extinct. Another benefit is that it helps increase the amount of food available because some animals are raised for food. Putting animals in captivity wrong unless they are being used for the animal’s benefits.
Keeping animals in captivity is an argument over the rights for the animals held captive at seaworld or marine parks around the world. Keeping animals held captive is when large sea animals are captured from the ocean and kept in a small enviroment such as a tank or an aquarium that are used for shows and entertainment living an unnatural life.Seaworld is a marine mammal park that puts animals such as whales and dolphins into serious harm that can help in the killing of the species as whales are in danger of extinction. In this report i have found imformation on the affects of keeping whales and dolphins held captive and how they would adapt back to normal life after captivity if possible,
Animal Cruelty is a problem that many ignore. People are oblivious to these animals and the negligence their owners show. Animal cruelty is an underlying problem in today’s society, and the only way to counteract these problems, is for this generation to do something about it.
The deeper I dig into animal abuse , the more I want to become a vegetarian. But it is not easy as it seems. The things that I have seen and read makes me sick to my stomach. To watch a hopeless cow, get whipped , is sickening. Watching baby Chicklets die in a big machine , brings tears to my eyes. Millions of animals every day die cruel deaths , and I no longer want to be an accomplice to the crimes. While it may be hard to retrain myself , I should and intend to just stop eating meat.
For to long the world has ignored China's Speciesism and it's repugnant miscynist citizens living inside and outside this vile country
Every year, millions of animals are killed for the purpose of classroom dissections. These animals include but are not limited to frogs, fetal pigs, sharks, mudpuppies, pigeons, mice, foxes, turtles, dogs and cats. The majority of animals used in dissections cannot be used again, leading to a demand in more animals for dissection each year. The use of live and preserved specimens has been the preferred method in both high school and college biology classrooms. However, there is growing concern as to the effectiveness and necessity of dissections. If cruelty-free options are available and have been proven to be just as, or more effective than traditional methods, then the basic ethical principle rules that we chose the less harmful method (Balcombe,
Habitat loss is a very real and very serious problem that goes on in our world today in every country.
to suffering. The slow torturous suffering of being locked up all day as people pass
Imagine a world where animals ran free, trees and grass covered the earth and the only light came from the sun and the stars.
Taking a family trip to a zoo or a safari park with the kids generally entails a day of fun and exotic entertainment. Children feast their beady eyes on the exotic animals showcased and are in awe at the fascinating things the animals perform. Despite the happiness generated at these locations, people fail to realize the gruesome facts that occur behind the scenes of zoos and safari parks. Although entertainment and education are associated with animal captivity, it remains to be a cruel practice that should be more strictly regulated because of the inhumane circumstances that the businesses subject the animals to.
A place without life is hardly even a place at all. The waves would flow over the oceans rocks, the sun would shine on the green leaves without prevail. The world builds with pollution, plants expand, and food virtually ends. In an environment, lacking the fundamentals of life, the existence of humans would experience complications of survival and health. The living cells of species provide a world of opportunity, health, and life. Over the last one hundred years, the population of endangered species has drastically risen. With the inadequate decisions regarding living species, the rate of endangered and threatened species will continue to increase. Through many different developments, species can be considered endangered or threatened and this condition can result from a multitude of factors and direct effects to the species. Groups, services, and organizations work together to protect these species through conservation practices and government assistance.
Most people have dissected an animal at some point in their education, be it a frog, pig, cat, or another animal. Every year in the United States, roughly ten million animals are killed and used for dissection in schools (“Animals Used in Education” 1).The surplus of students dissecting animals in class has led to this substantial number. Dissection is said to increase student understanding of biology and an interest in careers in science (Edulab 1), which is why countless schools have their students dissect animals. However, others advocate for methods that don’t involve cruelty to animals. Why use a learning technique if other methods are less expensive, and some tactics equally or more effective regarding student learning? Essentially, an abundance of schools incorporate animal dissection as an educational tool, but they seldom think of how negatively the lives of countless animals are impacted. People don’t fathom the cruelty that happens to animals before they land on the dissection table, and that is something that needs to be changed.
For thousands of years wolves have roamed the lands all around the world. From rich mythology and forgotten lessons, scientists have found evidence of wolves in almost every culture. Driven and hunted to near extinction conservation efforts have uncovered these long-forgotten teachings once again. Researchers are reminded of important family dynamics and the many parallels found in humans. Wolves were on the endangered list because they were hunted until almost extinction. Settlers farming of the land and the value of furs drove the hunt to eradicate one of nature’s top-level predators. Over the last few centuries biologists, ecologists, and scientists have been studying the effect this eradication has had on natures ecology. By observing the reintroduction of wolves into Yellowstone National Park scientists are uncovering new information on the real impact of top predators like the wolves. While the fight for survival of their species continues conservationists are fighting to find common ground to live and coexist with these formidable predators. Despite the legalization of massive slaughter of thousands of these majestic animals for sport, children of the next generation are already educating themselves and advocating for conservation. The hope is that these education and conservation efforts will allow humans and wolves to co-exist.
This photo from the World Wildlife Fund is a part of a series of similar photos. In these other photos the bluefin tuna is wearing rhinoceros and gorilla masks. For some reason these pandas and other creatures are the “mainstream” endangered animals. People seem to care more about these animals even though the bluefin tuna is actually in more danger. But, why? Is it because they are cuter? Nicer? More known?
Plants and animals are being threatened by the human race every single day. David S. Wilcove states in his article, "Only about 15% of the known species in the United States have been studied in sufficient detail to determine whether or not they are imperiled" (Wilcove). As little as "16,000 species," Craig Kasnoff wrote, "are on the endangered species list" (Kasnoff). Some of these are in the United States, where we live. It seems as though people do not feel it is their problem to deal with, when most definitely it is. Human beings in the world are not doing enough for endangered plants and animals because they are not enforcing the Endangered Species Act, polluting the air, and hunting in endangered habitats.
