Living gives human beings an opportunity to share feelings, build relationships, as well as a chance to impact values/skills/beliefs on families and the general society. Most people enjoy living and are self-determined to achieve goals that resonate with high quality of life, respect, and dignity. The Oregon Death with Dignity Act (DWDA) allows physicians, upon request from terminally ill patients, to provide lethal medication for self/voluntary administration (Lo, 2015). Assisted deaths are justified and could be the only option in exceptional circumstances of medical practice. Terminally ill patients may no longer find it fulfilling to live. Such patients may feel dependent on others for normal daily activities such as using the toilet; thus, adversely impacting on their dignity and quality of life. A survey of patients asking for assisted suicides found that 89.5% wanted to end their lives due to concerns on loss of autonomy while 65.4% were concerned about loss of dignity (DWDA, 2017). 89.5% of the patients surveyed were also concerned about their inability to live a quality life (DWDA, 2017). Here, fidelity calls for physicians to provide medical solutions that are both realistic and truthful to present conditions; hence, making assisted suicide a reasonable option.
