Persuasive Essay On Gun Laws

Our country wants the best but doesn’t want their freedom taken away. Gun control, something we avoid discussing. We know what guns do, but fail to make any change so we can prevent them falling into the wrong hands. We are taught how to prepare for a shooting, living in fear because of how frequent you hear about shooting in the U.S. This is a major problem, we shouldn’t be hearing daily about how guns are being used to commit a crime. Gun control could help us prevent crime and some of the fear. This is a problem for us because someone could easily get access to a military weapon not needed at all and it is legal. Someone with bad intentions could easily do a lot of damage because of our laws and that needs to change.

The violence in the United States is a big issue, but making more gun laws is not the answer. It is an inevitable fact that making it harder to get access to guns would only lead people to turn to black markets and more underhanded deals. In an article for the Los Angeles Times, James Q. Wilson writes, “It is virtually impossible to use new background check or waiting-period laws to prevent dangerous people from getting guns. Those that they cannot buy, they will steal or borrow” (Wilson). Dramatic changes within gun controls laws would, in itself, make more people mad and possibly lead to riots. In many people's minds, more gun control laws would mean to taking guns away. Gun control laws within themself are not a bad thing, the extent to which they are taken within a nation

of sixty-two mass shootings done by Mother Jones, about forty-nine of the weapons were bought legally! Twelve of were obtained through illegal methods, and the last one was unknown (Follman). Whether mentally fit or not, loose gun control laws allow those untrustworthy to buy guns and possible commit heinous acts.

Every so often the media and news feeds flood with reports of a mass shooting. Families mourn. In the days that follow, calls to action can be heard, and there is a demand for change. Sometimes minor legislation passes, but in the United States extreme change is rarely seen. Other developed nations provide an opposite comparison. Following the Port Arthur shooting in Australia and the shooting in Great Britain, both countries organized for significant gun reform.

Gun control laws are the government’s way of regulating the manufacture, sale, transportation, possession, and use of firearms. In our world today, we face the vast controversy of gun control and who should be able to possess a destructive firearm, and under what conditions. These laws differ significantly around the world, and in fact the laws in the United States vary by state. Supporters of strict gun laws argue the dangers of allowing citizens broad rights to possess firearms. Opponents claim that they wish to have a source of defense in their home, and also that certain regulations may violate their individual rights. Imagine you are a little boy, no older than the young age of six, entering school. The first day arrives, however conflicting feelings - from excitement to anxiety - emerge. Suddenly, a harsh metallic booming sound erupts, and within a mere sliver of time, you lay dead on the floor in a pool of blood. Unfortunately, this scenario is not merely hypothetical. Scores of innocent individuals are routinely massacred, killed by the mentally ill with legally bought guns: guns made for war, guns made to maximize death and horror. An increase in gun restrictions are essential in ending this gun violence epidemic plaguing the nation.

Imagine a woman being stalked by a predator outside of her home. Over a few days, she tells the police and files a report, but the problem persists. She fears for her life and tries to find a way to protect herself and her loved one. As a last resort, she travels to her local gun store because she needs to buy a gun for her safety. Unfortunately, the cashier explains that she’ll need to wait for her gun because there is a waiting period to receive her firearm. She begs and pleads and tells the cashier her situation and all the things she has tried, but the man can’t break the law for her. Reluctantly, she gives in and heads back to her unsafe home, only to be later assaulted and killed before her weapon could get to her in time. This type of situation happens unfortunately to some people, and it is because gun control laws have implemented waiting periods to receive your weapon. But that however, is just one of the many gun control laws that should be abolished in order to take a step forward towards a better society.

My claim is that gun control laws should be enacted. Its really not so hard for an American to get a gun and use it to harm others. Millions of people in the USA die or are hurt from from guns. Guns aren't making us safer there making us less safe. While there are countless reasons why they should be enacted the main ones are that lots of people die, people use guns illegally without licenses to hurt others and because people commit suicide.

Imagine somebody breaking into your home with the intentions of hurting you and your family and trying to take all your valuables that you own in your house, and not having anything to protect your loved ones. Without the protection of a firearm, the intruder could injure or kill all members within the household easily. In the United States, according to the Bill of Rights, a citizen has the right to bear arms, however, recently people have started to believe that guns only incite violence and therefore gun laws need to be more strict. Although, If you own the firearm for the right reasons and go through the process of having a carrying license, then that is within your rights to protect yourself and be able to own the gun. Therefore,

Saving lives one by one starts with limiting the purchase, sale, and use of guns in America. According to Alexander Lee, the political and social debate over the question of how much gun control is appropriate and it has been regularly discussed within the last decade. Shootings such as Sandy Hook, and Tucson shootings have raised the government’s awareness on guns and possible restrictions and regulations. Gun talks are discussed with the question, “Will controlling guns cut back on violent crime rates?” Although many guns are open to be sold to the public over 18, there are traditional gun laws that limit who can own them. These laws include sell restrictions to the mentally disabled, the age in which you can obtain a gun, background checks, and dishonorably discharged military personnel. Gun control laws could have a positive effect in America by reducing homicide rates, but at the same time, citizens still have the right to bear arms under the second amendment under the U.S constitution. Gun control laws do not mean the absolute confiscation of guns, but rather reduce the amount of power a gun and the amount of ammo that a gun can hold.

All across the Nation some citizens think that gun control rights should be taken from US citizens. These issue has been a National Debate for many years now. The side goes back in forth with citizens being able to have guns or not. The Second Amendment of the United States “A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed.” That right should not be taken away from US citizens because of protection, sport, and for hunting.

When these words were etched across a piece of parchment later dubbed the Declaration of Independence, it introduced a radically different idea as to how government would be formed. It took a stance that made government subservient to the governed, rather than the other way around. This portion of the declaration of independence outlined the need to make government flexible so that it complied with the normality of the times. After outlining what a government needed to look like, the founding fathers set out to create such a government and to guide them, they wrote the United States Constitution. The preamble to the constitution reads “We the People of the United States, in Order to form a more perfect Union, establish Justice, insure domestic Tranquility, provide for the common defense, promote the general Welfare, and secure the Blessings of Liberty to ourselves and our Posterity, do ordain and establish this Constitution for the United States of America” (US Constitution). The preamble to the constitution of the United states can be interpreted to be the basis for every amendment that follows. Therefore, gun laws must satisfy these conditions however,

Shootings often cause many to reflect on gun control laws. Some wonder whether it would be better for gun control laws to be stricter so that there are less guns while others wonder if they would be safer if more people around them carried guns for self-defense. Many debate whether the second amendment protects individuals to bear arms or only the state militia to bear arms for the security of the state. In the McDonald v. Chicago case, the supreme court ruled that the right to individuals to bear arms is protected by the second amendment. (7) Although this clearly states the fact the individuals can bear arms, the Gun Control laws need to be stricter throughout the United States by only allowing responsible citizens to own guns.
